  1. In part you are correct Daniel, but you can manipulate the temperature of a light fixture by adding coloured material in front of it...ie gels. Hence CTO and CTB. The same applies with any other source of material, if coloured, that you put in front of a light. Jamie, what I meant was, if you want to use a muslin to represent a particular colour temperature then you have to bleach it.....if you don't, as pointed out, and unbleached natural muslin will render a warm colour. Its the same if you put a ctb gel in front of a tungsten light.....it will render daylight.
  2. I can vouch for the HVX200 as a really good camera that renders excellent results. I'm not so sure on the EX1. These level of cameras don't normally give you an in depth alternative to manipulate the matrix. They tend to start at the DSR level. Com o sol maravilhoso na tuga has de sempre coseguir o dourado!!
  3. Muslin can be bleached to match daylight or tungsten or just to reflect whatever colour you want. You can point your light and use it like that, but keep in mind that it does tend to suck a lot juice out of your light. Also you can use it as a bouncing source. The bounce renders a very flat look.
  4. Watched it last night after a long time and really astonished to hear that he shot it 50 ASA when the key was throughout the film 2-3 stops overxpsd!! Great look!!

  10. Hi Jasper, My internet speed is 2mb but it still stalled on buffering.....what I find really helpful is to have a buffering bar so that you can press pause, minimize the window and come back when its buffered. 1st couple of shots looked nice....would've been great to see the rest.
  11. I do use a D SLR to check certain things on set but when I was learning about the Ansel's "Zone system" I found that experimenting with a SLR as the nearest to going out there with a 16/35 film camera. In my experience D SLR's never replicate exactly how film reacts.
  12. Setting the "moonlight" will be your primary key source, normally a good source for that is a Wendy light. On CU's, depending on contrast ratios, I would use something like a blonde(2K) into some poly or white card for fill. On mid shots I would recommend maybe a blonde or a pup with chimera. Last but not least have a couple of extra pups and tweenie's as for highlights and background carvings. I'm giving you this advice on a no information basis so it might not work for you...but this is what I consider a standard kit for something in a forest. Good luck!
  13. I hear what your saying.....the thing I hate most about Photoshop is all the different avenues you need to go down to get what you.....Is it fair to say that you prefer 3cP over the Kodak LUT?
  14. On a digital camera the optimum balance setting for mixed lighting without a WB is the preset of 4300k.....it splits the difference. So you will get daylight as sightly blue and tungsten will render a slight orangeness. Although daylight temperature changes throughout the day, 5600k is a safe place to work from. Full CTB will render you a colour temp of 5600k. I, and many others I'm sure, use half ctb as an effect colour. For example if you are shooting with the camera or stock that is set at 3200 and you want a slight amount of blue/daylight temp you would use half rather than full. I'm quite tired so hope it makes sense.

  16. I understand what you are saying Danny. I was showed the Crewdson book and my first reaction was WOW!!, I thought his photography was really good, and I still do. Its not doubt the guy can compose, light and utilise his resources. But in photography I'm more into understatement. As well as liking his work, there is also a side of me that thinks he's just trying to show off how well he can do. But then aren't we all in our own way.... Incredibly conflicting thoughts but I just wanted to state that I get you Danny......
  17. Not sure where this sits so hopefully its in the right place. I downloaded a 24hour demo of Gamma&Density's 3cP software and was playing around with the images that they provide. It seemed to me that it was just slightly more cinematography orientated kind of photoshop. 3cp comes in at an eye bulging $1,900 +! Does anyone have any info to share on this software?
  18. Hi Daniel, There are loads of positives but I'm going to mention what in my opinion you could improve on. I think that your framing is great but as a dp I want to see a reel for a cam op that shows not only framing but also movement in different circumstances. I understand it is hard to get the toys but its up to you to be ingenious. I also think that you need to play with dof a bit more.....nearly every shot has lots of dof. Last thing that I can think of is the music....its too distracting. You want the viewers to concentrate on your shots, not to be hyped up by the music as essentially that becomes the focus.
  19. It makes ppl think before they post! Comedy allows us to let the barriers down and spread light on the mistakes and atrocities that we (humans) have committed. By saying that we can't make a comedy moment out of something that is also serious means that we can't learn from these mistakes and grow......surely that is the point.

I find it difficult to believe that when "Cops" or "Girls gone wild" is being shot that a producer jumps in at the end and asks politely, an individual that has just been chased by the police, if he/she could sign a release form so their faces can be shown on tv! As I'm writing I'm thinking that there are some really confused ppl out there who might just say yes..... As for shooting backgrounds that contain information about someone's products, doesn't that just constitute as surroundings? If so, then it should all be above board. And in any way, its free advertising!! I would say that in the simpsons case it was because they had audio and video of their product.....making it a sub-conscience familiarization selling point. In regards to your last point, unless you've pulled a gun on someone on the street to make them answer your questions I can't see why you'd have to give them that option. Surely their verbal acceptance and signing of a release form should do the trick. but then I'm not a legal eagle! ;)
  21. Hi Jon, I like your lighting and from what I saw you represent an understanding of what is depicting with your camera moves. My only negative point is that it was a shame that the couple with arrows had some white clipping in the background and the guy getting up in his bedroom also clipped out. Although burning out is an option in our pallete of storytelling, I think that digital does not do any of us justice when trying to implement that style.
  22. I'd also say the same......the 18 stock is so sensitive that I wouldn't feel too worried about whether it will register. I'd be more concerned in achieving the right feel for the scene.
  23. Hey Ken, I understand how you feel and I'm sure many others do too. So don't beat yourself up about it. I think the lesson learnt is that next time prior to shooting you can explain to the director the potential problems. If he/she trust you and listen to what you have to say, they will with no doubt try and do what they can to help you out. Alternatively, if they can't, you have to try and convince them to do it in a "safer" location than the one they envisaged doing it in.
