  1. Hi Dave Thanks for the info.. I had a feeling there must be some device to do it.. would an F55 with global shutter make any difference do you think.. with an ordinary stills camera flash unit.. Thanks
  2. Pants isn't very masculine back in the home country..
  3. The softness of the light also really depends on how close you are to the subject,as well as the size of the light.. i.e. closer the subject the light source gets bigger and the light softer.. if that makes sense .. the sun is a very big light source .. but its well.. light years away.. so it can be very harsh on a clear day.. but cloud cover can be like a big sheet of diff.. and its close to us. and big... so the light gets soft.. ie a huge frame diffused light wont be soft if its far from the object/subject..
  4. You could try Sony F55.. it has a global shutter.. so should capture the flash or more likely to than rolling shutter.. had the same thing recently on a commercial shot to look like a catwalk in part .. even with a whole load of flashes going off.. did some tests day before and it didnt really look good enough.. was decided to add in post.. how they did that I don't know TBH.. There might be some flash gun gizmo .. but rolling shutter I think is always going to be a problem..
  5. Yeah not like they care about over exposure .. :) or wide apertures ..
  6. .. I was talking about framing.. not the meaning of the universe .. I thought you guys were having that conversation .. :)
  7. Sure when a camera is in EI mode.. But e.g. F55 in "custom mode".. REC709.. WYSIWYG .. if you change the ISO you are burning in the change.. from 320 to 800 .. something near clip will be over.. but your not gaining anything in shadows.. just boosting the noise.. so losing DR.. and in this mode your not protecting high lights but actually getting less of them.. There is an idea that adding gain will make the sensor more sensitive,or capture more highlight latitude .. which it doesnt.. Sensor aways stays the same..
  8. Approach the bar ... and have a drink..
  9. Sure but just adding gain in custom mode is lowering your DR and putting highlights into clip.. no ?
  10. "when you overexpose via ISO settings on the camera you are boosting the signals gain. so in effect you have more highlight latitude because the sensor itself is not clipping." If you just add gain your highlights will clip.. you have to be in RAW or EI mode to over/under expose by ISO as the recording is kept native ISO.. AFAIK..
  11. Yes but don't you have to be in EI mode to make that work.. just adding ISO gain is not going to protect highlights as mentioned in the OP is it ?
  12. Increasing ISO doesn't make the sensor more sensitive.. its just amplifying the signal.. and giving you more noise.. this is often miss understood.. the SN signal to noise ratio of a sensor wont change.. like turning up the volume of a radio.. more volume and more hiss.. Whether you need more or less lights wont make footage under/over exposed .. you just have to expose it correctly.. I don't know RED.. but they could be referring to the camera in EI..Sony and Arri have this so i guess RED does too.. exposure index..mode.. where by you can "rate' the sensor like you could a film stock.. 320 to 800 you have to stop down as your seeing a brighter image in the VF,but the sensor is still recording at the lower native ISO of the sensor.. so you are under exposing the recorded footage .. like changing your light meter to a different ISO than the film can says.. your shifting the grey level down.. giving more highlight protection.. although mostly people go the other way.. over expose a bit.. lose a bit of head room..theres usually way more than you need.. but get less noise..when you apply a LUT/grade the footage back to "normal" exposure.. This could be totally wrong regards RED.. but thats the only way I can think of to under expose by raising the ISO ..
  13. Why are you so sure the sun is rising.. I ask you this.. is it not the earth is lowering.. out side of the box ,you must learn to think ...young sky Looper..
  14. Are we not going up where the sun don't shine now .. :)
  15. Yes I think film/video shot as "art" and shown in a gallery is very different .. and of course anything goes.. thats really getting away from the discussion about broadcast TV.. and films for popular consumption.. though..
  16. "I saw a work not that long ago which consisted entirely of words from a story printed directly onto film and projected as a film - ie. completely unreadable, but for which there is an audience/market for such work." So what could you actually see on the screen.. why couldn't you read it.. ?
  17. True of course.. no one is going to get arrested and shot for too much head room... but equally there are such things as the 2/3 rule that have been around long before films and even occur a lot in nature.. a film or a Tv program is not a big deal.. its just entertainment .. we aren't that far from the white sheet up against the circus tent.. so why not write a book with all the words back wards.. this will make the reader more aware of the universe and the meaning of life .. and few articles about the author.. or just be annoying and difficult to read.. :)
  18. Duca Im no expert when it comes to big lighting set ups.. but your really over thinking this WB thing.. what about in the film days.. daylight and tungsten.. that was it.. ! Some video camera,s have auto white tracing.. but like anything auto on a professional camera .. you only really need it when you have no choice.. post grading these days is very cheap, quick and "easy".. you can do it on just about any laptop.. in the back of a van.. Don't worry about WB so much.. you will have so much else to worry about .. you don't have to be doing it in camera every 5 minutes.. just use the pre sets.. or do a WB when under unusual lighting.., if you don't like the color of that look. Sometimes the look of Sodium /or greenish fluorescent lights suits the mood.. why take the warm light out of a sunset.. etc Just shoot and relax a bit :)
  19. Re the article ...I don't know.. TBH I don't buy it.. Well written...well shot.. well light .. well acted .. well directed .. you don't need the gimmick .. except for the odd shot that really warrants it.. I mean short sided frames specifically .. whacky wide shots etc all for them.. Interesting discussion though.. all down to personal taste of course.. and if i was ever lucky enough to work on the shows and the dir wanted it,I would say yes sir straight away.. great idea :) But seriously ..on a talking head.. I would really fight it.. if it was no reason for it.. same as I would refuse to purposely put my key light the wrong side.. to look "different..
  20. Have you guys been at the pipe again.. .. or is this a very clever piss take.. :)
  21. "Even the Dadaists, trying to induce a pure randomness, would be fascinated by the opposite effect - a kind of weird intelligence that would emerge, despite all efforts to the contrary. Not a human intelligence but a kind of incomprehensible intelligence - as distinct from noise." Im gong to try this out on the next director that wants me to zoom into a sign..
  22. So I could be doing it after all ..
