  1. "Safely and efficiently" is a good rule of thumb...
  2. You're better off putting the money for the conversion into a Super16 SR-II or III. I bought an SR-II package off of ebay for less than 2K.
  3. Hi Michael. This is a "real names" forum, so please put both your first and last names on your profile when you get the chance. If you have any difficulty, just contact the administrator. Thanks and welcome to the forum.
  4. If we know what kinds of films you are planning to make, we may be able to narrow it down for you. A feature with dialogue, music videos, silent shorts?...
  5. Hi Dave. "ARRI" is the company name. "Arriflex" is the name of the camera(s,) referring to the fact that the system is a "reflexive" one. When the "mirror-shutter" is open, the film is being exposed. When the mirror-shutter is closed, the image is being reflected through a series of mirrors all the way up to the viewfinder so that you see exactly what you are getting. I would go for a Super-16 system, simply because the costs of 35mm are significantly higher than 16mm. They have been popping up on ebay a lot, lately.
  6. Three of my favorites... Helen Levitt Henri Cartier-Bresson Robert Frank
  7. Yes... Anyone can head down to court and do what you suggested, but things are rarely as black & white as you make them out to be. It's not all dollars and cents. If the sum total is a decent amount of money, sure - you sue (which should be the last, not the first resort) if they refuse to release your funds. But if it's some measly amount, then yes, you may indeed decide to chalk it all up to experience. For example, who knows who else was on that shoot that may have some real connections that you could use in the future? It could be that that person was also doing the producer "a favor" for the day. Then you decide to sue for whatever your day-rate was and the word gets around about that. Definitely not the kind of reputation you want to start out with. There are tons of politics involved, so yes - you weigh everything carefully. Actually, it's supposed to be both.
  8. I agree with Robin. Definitely make an issue to get paid, but also take it as a learning experience. Always get something on paper (and make sure you retain a copy of it) before you shoot a frame.
  9. Yes, but in order to answer that question, we are trying to understand what you mean by "hyperlapse"...
  10. I remember seeing that done in Apocalypse Now (more specifically in Heart of Darkness: A Filmmaker's Apocalypse,) possibly for the Dolong Bridge sequence. The lights were about as tall as the operators.
  11. I punched "hyperlapse video" into the Vimeo search and these videos were the first ones that came up: Paris in Motion Berlin Hyperlapse Los Angeles Hyperlapse/Timelapse ...all of which employ more of a single-frame/"fast-motion" kind of action. But it sounds like you are looking for more of an ultra-slow, Matrix kind of effect, right?...
  12. Without question. I took a class in grad school where we had to re-record the foley for two scenes, but also give them our own style. I chose Blade Runner for my mid-term & 8 1/2 for my final. I know very little about sound as it is and that class gave me a true appreciation of just how precise (and exhausting) an art foley sound is. But it was also a lot of fun. My teacher had her own online library and I was planning on starting my own but never got around to it. So I would say just be creative and start recording things from scratch. You'll have way more fun & control that way.
  13. Agreed! I saw that awhile ago and it definitely has some creepy scenes (especially at the end!) I didn't really examine the cinematography carefully, but I remember some very understated work which fit the film nicely.
  14. Yes, I saw Adrian mention it in a recent post and that was the first time I'd heard of it. Could be a bit more streamlined but the information is very useful.
  15. Due to the volatile nature some threads have been taking as of late, I thought a quick review of these might be in order: Forum Guidelines
  16. Funny! I cracked up when he punched the seal...lol
