  1. just got a hello from Ferrania on twitter two days back. they started following all [film] cinematographers. "countdown has started"
  2. Loud Applaud for Gregory. This man is made for working under pressure cooker environment. And regards to the vignettes, On a 50 ft screen if someone is watching the extreme corners of the screen instead of the story which is mostly in the centre sweet spot then the movie doesn't deserve the audience. I don't care about the vignette.
  3. An amazing take on the ephemeral nature of digital technology
  4. Their website has interesting thing to say for the six member core team. Apart from Nicola Baldini co-founder and CEO who is dying to shoot his next project on ferrania stock, there is a "Mysterious American" (not identified) who is working vigorously to put this product into the market. The current market for film has shrunk drastically. With Kodak still active and plenty of FUJI stock still in the market, I wonder if these Ferrania guys will be able to rise over the two industry brands - Kodak and Fuji. But its also true that in the near future, it is companies like Ferrania only will survive the niche film market.
  5. Brother, 80K is a hell lot of money. Buy a super 16 for less than 5K. and buy stock on the interest of 75K. still want to spend? buy a 30 ft cruiser boat. it will last you 20 years. Sail and shoot. :-)
  6. Aha, its a nice feature then. Self and my assistants are used to manually pressing the Phase buttons every two-three shots depending on how much rush i was in :-) . 416 comes automatically. Mixed feelings here.
  7. Very good article. Keep up the good work. cheers Prashantt
  8. I used 416 also for 3-4 days during the recent feature shoot. Very smooth camera. The only problem i had was once you press the button to roll, the shutter revolves once and stops, and after a pause it starts running again. I had tough time getting used to that. Why does that happen? can someone explain please. cheers
  9. A dense 7203 negative framed for 1.85 leaves no hint of grains. i have shot two projects with it.
  10. Giray, Any confirmation on this? or the source of news please. thanks n regards
  11. James Martin, Wow man you did the smart thing that you bought both. Sometimes, i do feel that I miss 35mm gear. Did you pick up an 435?
  12. "I would have shot the whole movie on the 416, it would have made for quite an interesting look." I second that Tyler! Super 16 stocks are awesome. Now is the time to make films on film.
  13. James Compton, thanks for the info. Did they use S16 inside the lifeboat?
  14. Jeremy, Yes even I heard that but I saw various posts of academy awards on Facebook and it said that it wasn't S16 but C300. I was totally zapped. What is the truth like? #CaptainPhillips
  15. Hi there everyone, greetings! Thought I will brief everyone on how super16 is still going popular with indie filmmakers and independent producers. 1. I shot a roadie film BOOM BOOM WALE in November last year for a director friend, is finally coming up for DI grading next week. The film was shot on a small budget. I used china balls and some practical lights for interiors and exteriors were all shot without lights. The results are good and the director is happy. 2. Am currently filming SANDRA BEDS SANDEEP on super 16 using Kodak Vision 3 stocks - 50D and 200T. My producer is a young guy who comes from television background. When we were doing pre prod he was slight apprehensive of super 16 being grainy. But I showed him some results and he loved it. He ran the numbers for both digital cine cameras and film cameras with stocks and he concluded that film turns out cheaper with good looks in built in the negative. and after that he hasn't looked back. What started as another shoestring film shot handheld turned into a full fledged feature. He hired studio spaces, built sets, got me lighting and grips package, generator vans, etc. He is satisfied with the results so far. almost 90% of principle photography is over. 3. The same producer now intends to start my second film JACKnJILL on Super 16 to be shot tentatively in Oct 2014. Earlier he was thinking of upgrading it to 35 but 16 is good he feels. It has a hell lot of character and feel.
  16. I shot a low budget roadie feature last november and I used only two stocks - 50D for ext and 200T for interiors and night (without 85). We had no lighting package except for some naked halogen bulbs / china lamps fired from a small genset. 50D performed excellent in exterior harsh daylights of Goa, India. The Vision3 50D has a superb shadow detail too. and you will not believe I used the 50D to even capture some montages during sunset and even 15 min after sunset. and every information was there when i was watching the rushes during telecine. It was an experiment that worked. and Underexposed 50D in twilight looks very cinematic. and that bloody 200T has so much information (just like Vision3 500T) that during night bonfire sequence it captured everything. I mean everything. It literally **(obscenity removed)**ed my happiness. All through out during the night exteriors shoot I kept cursing myself for the lack of lights. but when the results came even elements that were 3 stops underexposed were right there on the screen. superb information detail in that negative. Now I know not to panic when doing moody low lit shots in the night. cheers Prashantt
  17. try this company Gecko-Cam in Munich. I bought my SR3HS last year from them. very good service. they threw in a lot of freebies to me. Saw some 35mm gear too lying there. contact them. if they don't have they will hunt down one for you. cheers
  18. white Johnston tape around the exposed can. mentioning length and stock number, etc. the original tape of the fresh can goes on the mag. After that you can either throw it away but I just wrap them on my camera cases. feels good.
  19. i had shot 5218 anamorphic in day because we ran out of 250D. optically colour corrected it. when we ran the test print - it looked ok. not too much discernible difference. yes the skies won't be that blue :-)
  20. Karl, you are asking about the longevity of a film format. Instead, probe how long a particular digital camera has survived in the market for more than years. these digital cameras disappear in no time. its a fact. What will you do then? you can't even sell those older technology digital camera.
  21. Karl, I did buy an Arri SR3HS last year with lenses and accessories from Munich. Superb camera. I have shot 3 ads and a roadie film so far. the latest 'spec' ad I have shot is that of Harley Davidson. 16mm will be there for a long time. think of polaroid. just when people thought it was dead; the format was resurrected. think of ferrania. think of Nikon launching their own instapic this oct. so there is lot of development.
  22. Superb work. the smallest of the format, smaller than your thumbnails; and it holds the sun brilliantly in the frame.
