  2. The emails would have made an interesting collection to put up at the Internet Archive. It would be nice if AI could do all these archival films. Stick a 16mm film in a machine. It scans it, loads to the internet and does all the text, tags etc.

  4. Abel...you should test both labs out as they may produce different / better results irrespective of the equipment they use. Ask if they offer a test scan of a hundred feet or so you provide. Ask if they offer test scans they have done in different outputs. Good luck! <><><><> Selection from Cine' Kodak Archive Daniel D. Teoli Jr. Archival Collection Daniel D. 6. International News Reel Hearst 1926 D. D. Teoli Jr. A. C. : D. D. Teoli Jr. A. C. : Free Download, Borrow, and Streaming : Internet Archive No instant news back then. Closest to instant was the radio or newspaper. You also got fed news reels at the movies. Movies were big as they were cheap and it was the closest thing to yet to be invented TV. The average person saw 1 or more movies per week. In the beginning of the newsreel there is a crazy sport. College riders on horses pushing a humongous ball on the field with the horses. Maybe a takeoff on polo, just with a giant ball and no mallets. Lots of interesting news clips from around the world, as it was...97 years ago. Hearst was one of the top names in news. 12. Bub...make the film how you like. If you like lots of dialogue, go for it. Either a film will work for a majority of people or not. Get some feedback on your film from the public so your film is not made in an echo chamber. I noticed something similar with my archival work. Some people like text, others, like visuals. I'm in the visual camp. But you still may need some text, as photos can't always do it all. But...whatever you do have the dialogue decent quality so it can be understood. See the thread about it under 'Sound' section. Lots of dialogue is subpar nowadays. Can't understand it. Good luck! <><><><> 16mm GB (Gaumont-British) Reel Selection from Daniel D. 16. That is hardcore! That was why he was 'Godfather Willis.' That was from an era when the DP put some effort in the lighting and film tests. Now the kids can't be bothered with tests, even when it is instant digital. Before you use your lenses, you should test them wide open to f5.6. Know what it is capable of. Why use a lens at a certain aperture if it produces shitty res? Most lenses sweet spot is f4 or f5.6. <><><> ‘The Birth of the Beatniks’ 1945 Selection from ‘The Beatniks’ artist’s book by Daniel D. 17. The kids nowadays do a shitty audio job with a lot of the films. I can't understand how so many eyeballs and so many ears are involved in a film and they still put out crap when it comes to audio. I mean, when I work on my projects, it is just me more or less. When you work on your projects how many eyes and ears are involved?? No excuse at all. Another trend is for the kids to make films so dark you can't see the scene. I just don't get it?? Rule #1...don't have background sound noise, sound effects, music and dialogue going on at the same time. And if you do have an audio mix, have someone listen to the film to check the dialogue. Same thing with music and dialogue. Music can overwhelm the dialogue. Have a mix of old and young test viewers look at the film while in post. See what they say about the dialogue. you are surely not a good judge if you produce shitty audio in your films. Neither is your audio man, girl or zir. You know, when I work on my little film projects, I will sometimes make 12 or 17 versions of it in post on throw away DVD's to see how they look on TV and the computer. You can't get a perfect color / contrast grade for both TV and computer many times, so I have to average it out. It is the same with audio. I routinely change the audio volume up and down to test things. I downvote many channels on YouTube for this very reason. You can't understand the dialogue, they put constant music long with the dialogue and it distracts from the presentation. Or their audio volume is poor. If they keep doing it after I call them out...I downvote them. These aren't art films on YT, they are education, news or commentary channels. But some of them put constant, menacing music to try to 'boost' the message. You can also hire me as a cheap consultant. I will tell you what is wrong with your film in 5 minuets. I was watching an older film, from the laserdisc era. It was some rock and roll doo wop 60's remake. They had a group of girls in a convertible driving along and talking. They had wind noise, car noise, road sounds, radio music all going on all at once along with actresses that could deliver good dialogue. I shut it down after a few minutes. I couldn't understand hardly a thing. That shows shitty filmmaking. You can have big names involved in shitty work. Hoyte van Hoytema shot an action film with a black lead in it. Can't remember the name of the film. But the black lead was a shitty actor and you couldn't understand him. The lead girl was the same thing, shitty dialogue delivery. I shut the film down after about 30%. Terrible. Lost some respect for Hoyt, putting out crap like that. Don't sign your name to shitty work people. If you have to do it for the $, use a pseudonym. Have a little pride in your work. <><><> Prostitute Amsterdam (Candid) Selection from De Wallen Amsterdam's Red Light District 2014 by Daniel D. Teoli Jr. Daniel D. 22. Post some of the eBay photos...let's see um. I love the old tinted films. But I don't think films in the 20s - 40s were done on tinted stock for copy protection. That was done much earlier. People could get around it if they wanted to copy by then. Tinting was generally done for effect or maybe that was the stock they had on hand...but just guessing. Wide range of color tinted stock were in use back in the day. https://ia902608.us.archive.org/21/items/jones-tinted-films-sonochrome-1929/Jones_TintedFilmsSonochrome_1929.pdf Cine Art / Hollywood Featurette used their 'trademark' orange tinted stock for their films. Agfa and Dupont also made tinted 16mm stock. eBay photo eBay photo Some of this material here may have come from Barbara Flueckiger, can't remember. Check her out for info on tinted film stock. I had written to her years ago with some film questions...never got a reply. You may do better. Barbara Flueckiger Here is a scan from one of Cine Art's orange tinted film stocks. 'Hollywood Sand Witches' 1928 (NSFW) Vimeo banned me so have not put up anything else there. Sad, as I'm always getting new followers and never give them back anything. I guess the lechers like the old-time nudie girls. The weird thing is Vimeo didn't take down the old stuff, they just pull down anything new I put up. <><><><> Daniel D.
