  1. Never heard of him, but he sounds important. If you got a blog, do a piece on him. If you don't got a blog, do it here.
  2. They are! Make a video on their use when you get time.
  3. OP...do lighting tests. Lots of tests. And test your BW conversion as well. I take it you are doing digital. If film, color film does not have the grain structure that BW film has when it is desaturated. If the BW conversion looks poor, try giving it an almost imperceptible warm cast. Usually 1%- 2% saturation is enough with the proper warm color temperature. Or maybe you like a cold look with the same % for the blue end of the color temp. Whatever, just test all options. Good luck!
  4. ...forgot to mention. I can flatbed scan up to 11x17 inches and have a vacuum easel that can handle up to about 22" x 26" on the copy stand. So size is generally not an issue.
  5. Found this old post... GD...I would have loved to scan that stuff before it was trashed. Did you get time to scan it Dave? If so, can you send me the scans and I will upload to the I.A....or you can upload. (As long as the scans are decent res.) I was just going to write a post on this very topic... Scan your Catalogs! Paper catalogs are fast disappearing. Instruction manuals too! If you got the room, save the paper material and if not...SCAN! I'd be glad to scan catalogs for free for anyone as long as they interest my Archive and the material is shared with me. 600 dpi - 800 dpi scans, it just depends on the material. You just pay shipping both ways if you want the material returned. And if it is bulky catalogs, the binding gets cut off to run through the sheet fed scanner. write direct to discuss: w1000w@aol.com Dan
  6. DDTJRAC What is the black hinged square on the top left of photo used for? Is it for posting shooting notes for the cameraman? Is it a sunscreen for the cameraman's eyes?
  7. Very interesting OP! Never thought about it. No doubt Freestyle would have sold it back in the 70's. They specialized in repackaged films back then. I mean maybe they wouldn't have, but they could have. They sold anything for $$. None of the sample enlargements at the site impressed me OP. Digital is far sharper. Why don't you get some of that film OP and do a proper field rundown on it? I got something like that recently OP. Tru-Vue films. Not microfilm, but reminds me of it, it is so tightly wound. eBay Photo: Fair Use My Tru-Vue films are a collection of various burlesque theaters / performers. Very rare stuff. Now just have to flatten it out to scan!
  8. I can't find out which was the first adult movie put on videotape...but these are some of the earliest ones... Selection from Daniel D. Teoli Jr. VHS / Betamax Archive Selection from Daniel D. Teoli Jr. eBay Adult Only Archive At $99 a tape, they were pretty pricey. In the early days of VHS / Beta porn they didn't put explicit photos on the covers. They would advertise in magazines, some of them mainstream video mags. Later on, when video rental shops were widespread, and they had the 'back room' for porn tapes, covers became more explicit. In the early days of videotape rental stores, they even rented out videocassette machines. In 1972 they were renting out video equipment to film sex at home, or whatever you liked. Living through it, too bad I didn't pay more attention to that era. It would have saved some time putting the puzzle back together. NSFW link Early Video Equipment Ad 1972 D. D. Teoli Jr. A. C. : D. 9. I'd rather get the scoop from those that have tried things Frank. In other words, personal recommendations. You can spend a lot of time on Google and come up with a virus for your trouble by downloading free software. Or you can buy problem child's when someone could have steered you in a different direction. This is a discussion forum Frank, so I offer topics of discussion. If someone does not want to discuss, no one is forcing them. When I see a post I don't like, I don't waste time on it...I just move on to the next post. In any case, thanks for your input Frank. I will do some research on them.
  10. Man, I used to like seeing him and his stories on 60 Minutes. He will be gone 10 years in April. All the old timers on 60 Minutes were good....but Mike was my favorite. Press Photo: CBS DDTJRAC Post processing: D.D.Teoli Jr.
  11. Here is an interesting but dated 2015 story on Deakins. Roger Deakins: 'the opposite of a Hollywood person' ... with 12 Oscar nominations to his name | Sicario | The Guardian The title was: The much-lauded cinematographer of Sicario – as well as almost every Coen brothers film going – just might be the man to bring old-school values back to the blockbuster When I heard Deakins speak at the Oscars a while ago I knew he was a different breed. He was praising his focus puller! I had originally looked up his wife and found that article. I wanted to see if 'James' was a transman. I guess not. Congratulations Sir Roger!

  14. A thick 2013 mouse pad compared to 2 - 2019 mouse pads. In 2021 they shrunk in thickness even further. Now it takes 3 pads to = 1 of the 2013 pads. Normally not a big deal. But I can't sit too long at the 'puter or my back bothers me. So, I have a standing desk computer to use to break up positions. I rest my hand on the mouse pad sometimes and the bone in my hand gets sore if the pad is thin. So, I have to make a pile of 1 old thick pad and 2 medium pads for my mouse / hand cushion. If I only had the new 2021 pads, I guess I would need 6 pads minimum. Well, it cuts back on crude oil usage. Shrinkage is a popular way to reduce costs in many areas. Beside paper shrinkage shown below, in WW2 they cut back on staples from using 3 per magazine to 2 staples and then to 1 staple in some cases to save metal for the war. I used to like the big Ivory soaps...alas also hit by product shrinkage a few years ago. Shrinkage not only in size but in quantity as well as higher priced for smaller and less bars.
  15. There is an Archive that only gives out low-res garbage or fairly higher res JPEG 2000 files. I can't open the JPEG 2000 files in Lightroom or Paint or the photo viewer. They also have TIFF that is half-ass res, but you can't access it. (When I say half-ass res, it is about a 15mb TIFF and the JPEG 2000 is 4.2MB)Here is an example of one of their file names.ctkg_4904679_JPEG_2000.jp2This is the problem with lots of Archives. They are scum when it comes to open content sharing of material. Eventually I will write a thread about it at my blog. What can be done with JPEG 2000?
  16. DDTJRAC Radio Archive Do the modern Chris-Craft look like this anymore? They had some gorgeous wood in them!
  17. You gotta be careful with some of these targets Phil. Some are not good for hi-res tests if you are using for scanner use. Here is one at B&H for 1/2 the price of the Thor target. Here is one of the reviews for this target... Good Low Cost Resolution Target - but 3/1/2015 By null I purchased this product to evaluate my Epson R2400 scanner resolution. Before I scanned the Resolution Target I examined it under a microscope to provide a reference for the practical resolution range this target can produce. The microscope images show that the target has a significant amount of grain and the smallest resolving area of the target is under Grooup 6 with lots of grain. You can successfully evaluate a scanner with at best 5000 dpi. Group 7 is completely useless. So, if you are attempting to evaluate a scanner that is capable of 8000 dpi then this product is useless. For my Epson scanner the target served its intended purpose.
  18. Thorlabs make some nice targets of many designs. Positive and negative. Only issue is they are pricey. This one is a negative target for backlight use. It is a small target about 2x2 inches. Max Levy also makes resolution targets. Resolution Test Targets: II-VI Aerospace & Defense (maxlevy.com) What type of target do you use for lens tests?
  19. https://archive.org/details/gasholder-clip-the-big-combo-1955-d.-d.-teoli-jr.-a.-c. Clip from The Big Combo I'm crazy for gasholders. Like the electric street cars I wrote about, gasholders were all over L.A. when I was a kid. Now...no one would even know they ever existed.
  20. On set with D.P. Vilmos Zsigmond and Dir. Jack Nicholson The photog didn't bother to straighten the photo. Or did they do it in printing? Or was the photog going for a Dutch angle? Or is he a Winogrand copycat? Many of my photos are crooked...but I straighten them usually. I guess a Photoshopper could cut it out and reinsert it straight. But I'm an old film photog and not much of a computer person. I only know how to use Lightroom. This photo had about 20 mintes of Lightroom.
  21. Now here is another test. 4x5 drum scanned vs digital. 61mp Digital vs 4x5 Large Format Film Resolution Comparison | Mountain Photography by Jack Brauer I didn't read it all, but it seems FF 35mm 61mp digital is about equal to a 4x5 drum scanned film in res. So, as I said, film is relatively low-res stuff when compared to digital. And once you factor in all the generations away from the OCN you need to make a finished film...it really goes down in res a lot more. But the softness of film can also be the beauty of film. Just depends on what you want.
