  1. I got many hundred historical sex and non-sex films to archive and have no decent venue to put them online. I got banned from YouTube after only 6 uploads. Here is the film that broke that camels back at YouTube. A few hours after positing it, YT banned me. The film has no sex, just historical nudity from the beatnik era. It was also put up to show what type of quality you get when using a Wolverine 8mm film scanner. (The answer is low quality.) nsfw Link removed by admin.
  2. I don't know if I liked the movie or not. Kinda hard to follow for an ADD like me. ...but I loved the 3 min dance scene!
  3. I read Robert Franks final cut for 'Pull my Daisy' was 20 minutes out of 30 hours shot. How do you average?
  4. OP...they look very good. But I didn't watch them all, just bits and pieces of them. I found the first one a little boring for me, but I got ADD so I may not be the best critique for fairness. You comp and IQ was very good. I am not into landscapes much, so I preferred the people, the ones with actual people not just feet walking. Sure, I understand you are injecting art, but it just did not appeal to me that much to hold my attention. I do street and documentary still photos and manage a small gauge film archive. This is more of the style I am into, so you can see, where I'm coming from in my critique. Candid... https://danielteolijr.files.wordpress.com/2015/03/21whoop-whoop-21-daniel-d-teoli-jr-mr.jpg To me IQ only so goes far, I like something interesting happening. When you shoot off the cuff things are not perfect. I'm also prejudiced to using super wides. I specialize in shooting candid in your face photos. I'd tell you to keep up the work, you got talent!
  5. No adjustments on old plug but will look at previous discussion. Thanks!
  6. I bought 2 editors from Europe. (Zeiss Moviscops) The only issue with them is they are 220v. They only had 2 wires in the 220v plug, so I thought it would a simple thing to exchange the plug to USA style. While they did light up, the bulb only gives off half the light it should and picture is hardly visible. Any advice on how to make them brighter? Thanks
  7. Yes, that is how the bohemians roll. They are always looking for the edge and pushing the system. Bohemians usually have little money and little artistic success when it comes to making $. They prefer to do 'their project' over selling out, so they are chronically short of $ until the 'big break' comes. For most the break never materializes. I've been shooting nearly 50 years and still waiting!. Consequently bohemians are always on a proverbial 'low' budget. Here is how I work when shooting in NYC.. nsfw https://danielteolijr.wordpress.com/2017/01/14/you-broke-and-wanna-shoot-in-nyc-no-problem-you-can-do-it/ ...I could ever afford to shoot in NYC otherwise.
  8. Sam...here is the deal... We got to pay tax or we will all be speaking Chinese or Russian. But I agree, most of the tax is theft and amounts to 'might makes right' forcing power over those with little power. If we don't pay the tax our car will get impounded, we will lose our home and be homeless. In the Rustbelt today it is 12 degrees. Homeless can be a death sentence here.
  9. I was reading on the 8mm forum where they discussed archiving digital movies onto film. "I work for the industry actually and i can assure you that all the digital files are transferred to film, all the serious people in the industry and some serious executivein Hollywoodknows that digital files dont last. Film is the only way to go for preserving for centuries, actually we work with fuji eterna that can survive for more than 300years,to record digital images on black and white film, the images are first separated into red, green, and blue signal data, which are then exposed and recorded onto three separate films. In other words, one digital master is saved onto three black and white films. The full-color images can be easily and precisely reproduced to the exact standards as the originals by scanning and digitally compositing the separate images or optically exposing them directly onto film." http://8mmforum.film-tech.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=8;t=004640 What about archiving the indie digital movies on films? It must be expensive and only practical for the major productions. Did they ever develop something similar for making negs or chromes from digital still photos to archive? I know they have inkjet film, but I am talking about wet process film. Thanks
  10. I've only used the laser rangefinder. It works OK, although I use it for longer distances. I'd like to try the ultrasonic someday. The laser can be pinpointed to whatever object you want, so isolating an actor or object is not an issue.
  11. Looks like the Kinetta never took off. I guess the price was just too much. It is a very pretty machine. Too bad they could not get the price down.
  12. Run an ad in climbing mags or kayaking mags. I advertised on Craigslist for a trans person for a book I was doing. Interviewed 22 trans applicants. 21 of them flaked out. The last one barley came though. I had to pay $400+ expenses for about half a day shoot.
  13. Within photography as well as many of the arts, there is the creative end and a technical end. You can be a great technician with little artistic creativity or you can have great creativity in vision, but your technique or technical skills may be poor. Now, there are some photogs that have been great technicians as well as possessing a super creative mind. They are the ones that have it all! I find when it comes to street / doc photography, too much technical concentration can hurt your ability to get the shot. We should also not compare technical aspects of studio work to technical aspects of street or doc photography. If you want your candid street work to look polished like studio work it generally wont happen unless you stage it. The rest of the story... https://danieldteolijrarchivalcollection.wordpress.com/2017/12/18/im-not-a-technical-photographer/
  14. I was working with a 16mm 1940s film that was a hurricane survivor. I normally use Edwal Anti Stat Film Cleaner to clean the films, but this film was particularly messed up. While the Edwal cleaned some of the dirt off, it left a lot to be desired in the cleaning dept. So, I decided to give Urbanski's Filmrenew a try. I was amazed with what the Filmrenew cleaned off the film. https://danieldteolijrarchivalcollection.wordpress.com/2017/11/30/film-is-pretty-filthy-stuff/ (No financial interest in any of these products
  15. I just started with small gauge film this year. Here is an interesting 16mm film on Eastman House I just had digitized. Covers early photography. Although I'm an old school film photog, I don't know much about movie film work - am learning on the job. Opened a YouTube account at 10 minutes to midnight last night and put it up. Most of my film archive are probably not allowed on YouTube, so will put them up on the Internet Archive. Happy Thanksgiving!! Dan
  16. Resources for dating film stock and an outline for the developmentof motion picture film: https://danieldteolijrarchivalcollection.wordpress.com/2017/11/11/how-to-date-vintage-movie-film/
  17. Wow, wish I could attend. I'm doing archival work in 8mm and 16mm films. All self-funded, so no extra $ to spare. Now is the time before it all turns to vinegar. So much has already been lost. https://danieldteolijrarchivalcollection.wordpress.com/2017/08/11/film-is-not-as-archival-as-it-was-hoped-to-be/
  18. Have you ever used a zine for promotion? What printer did you use? How did it work out for you? Thanks
  19. Tyler, it is easy to lose a master. The way round it is to have numerous backupsoff-site. But that is even more $. Why is the cost so high per year to keep a digital asset?
  20. OP, they both have their advantages. The biggest killer of film will be when people stop using it. Digital can have a plastic, artificial look to it sometimes. Digital is too sharp. Film is more organic, less harsh. Of course, this is speaking in generalities. What needs to be done with digital is to make the output more random and organiclike the grain structure in film. Here is my take on it, at least with still photography. https://danielteolijr.wordpress.com/2017/06/24/film-vs-digital-image-quality/
  21. Is there a list of inexpensive basic movie editing software to sift through? I just gave a quick look to Sony Vegas and the $600 price tag was a turn off. I just like to add a basic title to some video and edit some existing MP4 video. I also have a bunch of TIFF files from film scans and I'd like to assemble the TIFF series into a MP4 as well as a higher res DVD. Is there some basic video editing software in the $150 range you could recommend? Thanks
  22. OP...that should be an interesting read. Glad someone is trying to archive this stuff. Good luck!
