  1. I was the technical director and camera operator behind this project. With my camera gear hauled all the way to Vienna it was shot over the course of 4 days. 2 months later I am ecstatic to show you the result very soon. "Instead of finding peace and enlightenment, I found the darkest nights I'd ever seen with the most frightening sounds coming from the woods at night (no Slenderman present because he already fled the scene out of fear). I spent 3 days alone (+ whiskey) in the middle of nowhere in a cottage in the woods to answer some questions for myself: "What do I want to do with my life? Where will I be in 26 years?". I wasn't planning on writing a song, but amidst the weird noises and the solitude this kinda happened. "Night In The Woods" is about feeling stuck and being anxious about your deathbed regrets." It is going to premier on YT on the 1st of October. Editing: WHSPRS, Bardic Colour grading: Me, WHSPRS
  2. Soon I will be shooting 2 (3?) music videos in Austria with musicians in the VRChat/Furry scene. So expect the virtual and real life to intermix with the help of the funny animal people and fluffy avatars. The majority will be shot on Super 8, right now I am gathering and organizing my gear for the trip. Film has already arrived on location. Still debating whether I should bring my steadicam rig, because it is such a hassle to bring even on checked luggage.
  3. I am part of the VRChat filmmakers group, and have been watching this huge project unfold over several months. This short film was recorded entirely on the social VR game VRChat, which centres itself around user expression and creation. All of the assets, avatars, environments, and visualizers you see are build by the community that create content for one purpose: To get people together. It is really awesome to see the filmmaking scene taking off, so many strides have been taken this year for this very new medium. People can wear trackers on bodyparts such as feet, legs and elbows to have motions of the user translate to their avatar in VR. Up to 11 points of tracking can be ingested. I think it is very interesting how Ariel intermixed the HUDs and various screens of the game with the footage taken with the vrchat camera, I haven't seen it done like that before. Also like the colour grading and FXs such as grain and QA added in post. One big problem is that eyes of avatars look at the closest source of audio, so unless the actor has an (expensive) headset capable of eye and face tracking, it does unfortunately look off at times. I feel like this short film also showcases some types of environments and people that I have seen in the game for real as well, and perhaps this imitates life... "A young woman searches for connection across one night in the VRChat club scene." Filmed over 6 months in real VRChat music venues during live events, and featuring a soundtrack of incredible songs and OST created entirely by VRChat users, Ulterior Motives is one of the most ambitious film projects created within VRChat, and was created with the assistance and passion of so many people in the scene.
  4. Thanks Jörg, That's a lot of good info. I might also want to record some tripod shots, and I am thinking which mics to use. I assume if I put the GoPro ontop of the camera and use its internal mic the mechanism audio will be way too loud. I see most super 8 mics can be angled up and extended outwards away from the body to cut off noise. Are mics like the canon BM 50 and 70 directional towards the front, so audio coming from the back like the camera noise is mostly cut out? So I am thinking getting a BM 50 or 70 and plugging it into the GoPro would be ideal. Unless there are modern comparable microphones?
  5. Alas, none of those companies can or are willing to do a CLA on that camera.
  6. Is there any place left that can CLA a Canon 1014 XL-S? I have found a receipt on ebay that appears to have been about repairing and CLA'ing such a camera. But I havent been able to find the company. I translated the receipt with Google Lens and it says "Shinji Co., Ltd. 804-7128-8798 58 Imaue, Noda City, Chiba Prefecture." Any thoughts on current CLA services? Regards
  7. I recently got a Angénieux 6-80mm F1.2 lens with the reglo-zoom collar and motors, for a 4008 and 5008 Is there a way to put this lens in a 6008 LCU? So I have auto aperture and zoom controls. Preferably without modifying the lens. I do have spare LCU.
  8. Pro8 has grading/colour options you select when you file in your info. Amongst these options are things like a scene to scene grade, single grade and a flat/log scan. There may be more options. Looks like you selected the LOG option. This is meant to be very flat so there is no clipping in the highlights and shadows. So this scan needs to be graded in something like davinci resolve before it looks like something projected with reversal.
  9. I'm guessing most super 8 camera's meter Ektachrome 100D as 160? Do you know if the Canon 1040 Electronic and Canon 1014 XL-S meter it at 160 or 100?
  10. Can confirm the 6008 S still has the power zoom enabled in manual exposure mode.
  11. Which camera do you recon will get more light on the film, a Canon 1014 XL-S at 18fps and 220 degree shutter, or a Beaulieu 6008 S at 18fps and Low Light mode? Both at 1,4. From what I have read the Canon 1014 XL-S has a much longer time where the film is exposed compared to the Beaulieu, but the latter doesn't lose any light to a beam splitter. I will probably take both with me anyways on the next convention. The Canon might be easier to focus because it has a split prism and the Beaulieu just has a ground glass in the middle.
  12. I have shot Ektachrome with my Nizo on auto and set to the lightbulb (filter out of the way) and it came out great. I think it meters for either 160 or 100 which would be good. If you set the switch to win I think the red filter will be out into place and make your recordings very red. Put it on lightbulb. If it does meter at 160 on lightbulb, manual override of the aperture is trivial with this camera to correct it 2/3 stop.
  13. It is looking like the 1014 Elec does cover or largely covers max 8, I would need to do a full zoom sweep to know at which focal lengths. I may take the gate out again to take a better look, or get a finer file and try on a spare gate from a parts camera. When filing take your time, you can always file more off but never file back on. You can see I took too much off at the top so it projects through to the previous image. From what I have seen the 1014 XL-S has a smaller image circle and doesn't cover anything beyond the normal super 8 frame.
  14. VrChat is a social and game platform where people meet, talk and interact with each other in virtual worlds and avatars. The user wears a VR headset, controllers and often also full-body trackers that translates their movements to the cyberspace. High-resolution 3D visuals from the headset trick the mind in experiencing a real sense of commodity and closeness. Some others even experience phantom-touch. Creators are the integral cornerstone of the platform, managing to build incredible spaces and avatars that make for experience completely unlike what is possible. Friendships and even love is born out of their efforts that allows everyone to come together. It was only a matter of time before people took the platform way beyond what it was initially conceptualized as, and with imaginative minds and ever growing skill-sets are at the forefront of something beautifully new. It is wonderful to see so many get together to make things that speak to their heart. Much like with stop-motion where people come to accept and even love the jittery ness and fingerprints as an integral and romantic part of the medium, I think the right way to go about using VrChat is to accept and go with the janky-ness, even use it to their advantage for comedic effect or storylines. A few lovely and expertly done videos: And this video played towards the end of a 2-day virtual festival hosted by Furality, it played during their closing stream so it was a wonderful meta-inside video that was cool to experience there live. The festival hosted live music performances done by musicians in VR, and also meetups and avatar showcases. The hourly fireworks show at the lobby was breathtaking and emotional to witness with friends:
  15. I'm entertaining the idea of recording a 3 minute acoustic performance on a single super 8 cartridge, as one continuous take. I'm already talking with the musician and he would totally be up for it and use it as his official acoustic video of the song. He said he will have to shorten the songs a bit to fit in 3 minutes but that's no problem. He also said he has a portable recording setup so we can do it inside or outside whenever. A few questions: I'm also thinking to put a field recorder ontop my 1014 XL-S or Beaulieu 6008 as a backup and to get the camera noise/ambiance. Any idea how loud the camera noise will be? Neither camera are crystal sync, should I still use a film slate at the beginning and end of the film? I want to move around and change angles during the video, any idea for cool shots?
  16. I don't know. Thinking about doing an other test with a real colour and resolution chart outside at the widest, medium and max FL. And also a tripod. But film is expensive. Could be because I didn't file the gate right all the way.
  17. https://edition.cnn.com/2023/02/20/entertainment/alec-baldwin-rust-charges-reduced/index.html "The manslaughter charges against Alec Baldwin relating to the 2021 fatal shooting on the set of the movie “Rust” have been downgraded by prosecutors in New Mexico, which will reduce the prison time the actor could face for the death of the movie’s cinematographer, Halyna Hutchins. The move comes after attorneys for Baldwin filed a motion this past month to have the firearm enhancement charge dropped, arguing prosecutors were incorrect."
  18. Congratulations! It turns, that is good news. Before everything is cleaned and lubricated again though I wouldn't run it too much, the extra strain might damage/wear components at a higher than normal rate.
  19. When it comes to colour film with the quality and consistent of Vision3 I am afraid it is really going to be: Use it or lose it. The film market -still and motion picture- is never ever going to be able to support the R&D that Kodak and Fuji Film put in to get to the point where they are now. The sheer amount of equipment and money to R&D stocks like Vision, Eterna, Portra, Velvia/Provia is insurmountable with today's market. In the 1990s and early 2000s the market would have supported a return on investment, but now even with the "renaissance" its peanuts. Would the current market be able to support large repairs to the EK facility if it got damaged? all eggs are in one basket. It is a scary thought. I think it took Kodak 3 years to bring Ektachrome back, its a miracle they made it. Colour film with Kodak's and Fuji Films quality is something people take way too much for granted, until its gone.
  20. Doesn't it have a brown/orange/yellow mask like normal negative colour film that would persist (in its negative equivalent) when developed as a positive? The base would not be clear. I'm sure there is a proper emulsion-engineer name for it but that is escaping me now.
  21. It does remind me of cross-processed reversal. I dont get why they would do that, I would love a higher speed, 400 something reversal stock it would be a market not provided for. Reversal would not work because the base is not clear, it seems to have a mask of some sort but unlike normal C-41/ECN-2 film.
  22. Probably just a shipping proxy, I don't know of any company in the Netherlands that has a finishing machine (Slitting, perforating, cutting and packaging.)
  23. I have recently acquired a bunch of Super 8 Cameras and wanted to test some of them out with one cartridge, by swapping it. I think it was 200T or 500T, I am not sure anymore. Most cameras were set to auto exposure, but it was pretty dark outside and the sun sinks over the length of the tests so it isn't much of a good test to see how the exposure meters are consistent across each other. Especially when most of the tested cameras can not meter beyond 160. Regardless, thought some may still like to see it. In chronological order: Beaulieu 6008 S, Canon 1014 XL-S, Nizo 156 Macro, Nizo 481, Baurer S209 XL, Canon 1014 Electronic Auto Zoom (1) w/ DIY Max 8 Gate, Canon 1014 Electronic Auto Zoom (2) /w Super 8 gate, Nizo 156 Macro, Beaulieu 6008 S. From what I have seen the Canon 1014 XL-S is not a good candidate for a Max 8 gate because the lens does not cover it as well as the 1014 Electronic. I do not have an eyepiece of the Baurer S209 XL, does anyone know eyepieces that fit? And It looks like I need to adjust the viewfinder dioptre. Other than that, they all seem to work well and appear fairly stable. I knew the first Canon 1014 Electronic Auto Zoom worked because I have used it for a project before but I did the DIY max 8 gate after. I may need to do a little more filing on that one but I notice the bottom has too big of a cut. I do have a third gate from a donor camera so I may try again at some point. All in all I'm happy.
  24. A new film stock is very exciting! I dont care about the canister flare as long as they are able to keep their heads above the water. I love experimenting with different film stocks, I will want to try their super 8 film. Tye, do tell what your first impressions are, do you think the grain will look like Vision2 or something else? Is NC500 tungsten or daylight balanced? And it is C-41 right? Interesting choice.
  25. I appreciate your feedback Joerg. When mixing I didn't really look for the rhythm of the dancers, maybe something I can keep a better focus on next time. A lot of EDM is played at the club which is often high BPM, more music I guess you won't like ? For those who are interested, some boring details of the equipment: Super 8: Canon Auto Zoom Electronic 1014, Kodak Vision3 50D and 500T. VR: VRChat, 1080P and 2K OBS video recordings and photos made with built-in stream camera mode and camera rail mod (The latter is no longer possible) HD: Nikon Z6 II, Sony eXperia 10 IV Photography: Mamiya 645 S1000, Ektachrome 100 and Portra/Cinestill 800 @ 1600. Polaroid camera.
