  1. How come some DVD Cases will sometimes state the film's anamorphic aspect ratio of being, say, 1.78, or, 1.66, 1.85, but they always fill the screen, which is 16x9. (Except 2.35 films, which are always close to their stated ratio. If a case claims 1.85, then it theoretically will not fill the screen since it will be wider then the 16x9. Am I missing something here?
  2. This happened about 10 miles from where I am working in Cedar Rapids. If you look at the pictures at KCRG.com it's a wonder all were not killed, although the two who survived are still in critial condition. When I was renting out Tyler Mounts in Salt Lake City, we had a chopper with a middle mount go down along a highway after it hit a wire. All were very lucky since the craft was able to skid along highway mostly right side up. Destoyed pretty much everything accept the 35-3 and lens.
  3. For a later example of a film that was shot on true B&W stock, check out "Dead Man." A lot recent films that tout B&W but were shot in color look good nonetheless, but they lack that feeling. Check out "Rumble Fish" too.
  4. When going for a specific look, I always try to achieve it in-camera if I can. Therefor I have a very costly collection of backups for my glassmasters. 1) Antique Suedes (usually #1) 2) Chocolates (#2) 3) Promist (1/2-1) 4) Fog (for a really good halo)
  5. hmmmm, photo backdrop. I didn't think of that. I just looked at the picture and the critical, almost misanthropic side of me just assumed that they rolled up their sleeves and got their hands dirty out there in the harbor. Bummer.
  6. What's really sad is that shot with the Statue of Liberty reflection from Godfather Part II would probably not be done today. What's so great about it is is that you can tell it is real reflection. The filmmakers went out and filmed that and it real. Today, especially if it were a big budget studio picture, it would be done digitally and no matter how well done, you would be able to tell it was done with green screens and all that trickery. Back to the topic. Almost everything from "Days of Heaven." Pop the DVD in and press the Chapter advance and your eyes will feast. "Fitzcaraldo" has a great shot that is a happy accident. It happens at dusk with the ship moving down river and far off lightning strikes from a distant storm. Everything about that shot is perfect. Movement, sound F/X, Popol Vuh score. Flaming tree in "Cobre Verde." "Even Dwarfs started Small." Drive a truck into a volcano today will great you in big time trouble. That thing is still probably down there. There is some great stuff from "The New World" that only a visionary would try and include and do for real, i.e. no special effects. Shot of the Moon eclipsing Jupiter comes to mind. True what you see is what you get. Very rare. Especially today.

  8. I have a really nice Arri IIC with Norris Intervelometer and Tobin Flat Base. Great Lens Selection. Zeiss Primes. Angenieux Zoom. Also Proud owner of very Nice Canon XL2. Nice Belieue 2008 Super 8 to boot. I would like to be the first to start a picture thread of starving film/video lovers and their precious toys. How could we go about doing it?
  9. Back in '97 I was using a Eastman stock (Forgot the number) that they advertised as having a "Stonewashed" look. I loved it for it's almost pastel palette. This stock also had a very unique grain structure that sort of reminded me of the autochrome. Kodak discontinued the stock just as I dosvered it but I was lucky enough to but several thousand feet to shoot my thesis film (which was rewarded, ironically enough, by Kodak for the cinematography.) If I can find the stock number I'll post it.
  10. So Captain. What is your story? Are you setting up a production house or do you paln to start your own lab? It sounds very cool whatever it is. Where are you located? Sounds like you might be in Colorado. If so, I might be startinga job in Aspen soon. Maybe some day we can hook up. Glad to see that you still have passion for film. Keep it alive and good luck.
  11. And my Evel Knevel Dolls and Cycles where all made by Mattell. That didn't stop me squirting them with lighter fluid and sending them airworthy from the roof of the house. I was a good kid and did this for the enjoyment of all my friends. But my Fisher Price PXL 2000 still works like a charm and makes me stingy. Sorry. No dice.
  12. I bought him a Audio Vox. I wanted to get a camera that is cheap and has cheap, distinct look. There's No Way that little punk is getting anywhere near my PXL2000. :P
  13. David, This inexpensive Audiovox is USB only. Here's a link. Do you think this would be good enough for a eight year old who has no idea what he is doing. What is very importnat is that he WANTS to learn. http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller...egoryNavigation
  14. Audiovox Price : $ 109.95 Shipping Cost DC400 MPEG4 Digital Video Camcorder / 2 Mega Pixel Digital Camera Is the cheapest I can find. No Fire Wire, though. I remember those old Fisher Price Camera but they're not much good for NLE. Keep the Idea's Coming. His Birthday is in a week!
  15. My eight year old nephew is fascinated with the fim and videos I make and wants to learn to make his own. Can anybody recommend a good starter camera geared towards the 12 and under budding types? Does anybody make editing software for kids?
  16. hmmmm. I wonder who that is aimed at? Sounds like somebody is still trying to rile a red-ass from a certain prickly steadicam operator who likes to yack and complain. To the point. Saw "Da Vinci Code" this Sat. and kept thinking, "I'd probably be enjoying this a lot more if I were at home watching it in HD." I thought this this time mainly about the movie. But I will add that I was likely the only one who had to get up 10 minutes into the movie to tell the "manager" to open the curtains so their crummy movie would fit on the screen. Idiots and medicority and destroying the industry and nation.

  18. This morning I walked out in my back yard and was surprised to see the neighbor kids throwing Yard Darts around. Anybody old enough to remember the genius of these charming toys? About a half-hour later I go back out and the kids (three of them ages 10-12) are standing around quietly, looking at their feet. I haven't seen kids look that innocent since I was twelve. Then I look over at their neighbor's Burnt Orange Chevrolet Convertible with a Green Yard Dart sticking out of the top. Oh, man! If I didn't flash back to the 70's I don't know what that was. Kind of like the time launched my Evel Kneivel Cycle (in flames) off the roof and into the same neighbor's bushes.
  19. So far this is one of the most stirring introductions to a movie that I have ever experienced. My hope is that this feeling sustains to the end. Awesome.

    Red

    And what did he say?
  21. It better have a microphone and none of this Ertyl toy construction nonsense.
  22. If some people's panites are still in a wad on the floor over what so-and-so said about RED a year from now, I'll eat my shoe and film it with my new RED. I'll even give you the honor to press the "RECORD" button... but only if the damn thing even has one by then.
  23. And I bet the price they're promising is going to be as unreal as the camera. I knew it was a bunch of bunk.
  24. People are saying that they want to see true footage shot with RED. What I would like first is to see an actual photo the camera. I'm not even sure if this really exists. Go to RED.com. What they are posting are not photos (only their zoom is a true photo) but artist rendentions. As far as I'm concerned, what RED is is still just a concept. Like when you see a concept car at a car show. It looks all flashy but will it work in the real world? Also, no working professional is going to shoot with a chrome camera for obvious reasons. And what about controls, buttons, even a true view finder? How about attaching a base plate for rods and so forth. I don't even see a way to mount it to a head. This is not the real deal. I like the numbers, but I would like even more to see a true photograph of a fully dressed model.

    RED

I just came from the RED website. I've been counting the days and hours, waiting to see this thing. Now that they are showing it, all I can say is, "uh?" Is what they are showing really the camera? It looks like a concept camera. If the terminator had a HD camera, then RED would be his weapon of choice.
