Hello, I recently bought a bolex 16mm film camera. Runs well. However, everything in the viewfinder is very very dark, even with quite a bit of light and aperture fully open. Is there anyway to fix this? Also, I got a 25mm to 100mm zoom lens for it. Almost impossible to focus because viewfinders so dark. Besides that, even when zoomed out all the way, things appear closer than they should. I have to stand at the other end of the room just to get a medium cu shot. Any ideas? Thanks.

I have a filmmaker friend who recently gave me his old Bolex H16 Reflex absolutely free over the holiday season. He has since graduated to a high-end digital setup, but said that the H16 Reflex properly cared for will give many years of service and can deliver great results for low-budget filmmakers. I'm a student, so low-budget pretty accurately describes my operation. However I'd be willing to invest in a lens that would suit my needs. I do stop-motion animation (seeking a BFA in Animation), and would like to use film for my project. The Bolex came with a pistol grip, a supplemental film magazine, cable release and a Vario Switar 18-86mm f. 25 OE lens. I'm wondering: what kind of lenses / accessories would I need to make the H16 Reflex suitable for stop motion animation? The lens I'm currently looking at is a Kern Switar 10mm f 1.6. Apologies for lack of knowledge, as I am an amateur. Thanks!

So I'm pretty new to 16mm stuff, I've gradually been making the switch from digital. It's been pretty fun. Right now I'm using a Bolex as my A-Cam and two old Keystones as my crash cams. Yeah, I'm working on filling the gap between those two, but that's not the point. One thing that I've given up since making the switch was my anamorphic lenses. I love them to pieces, they're just awesome. However, I've had trouble finding a conclusive solution for a c mount anamorphic lens. It's kind of frustrating, and I was wondering what my options realistically are. I've heard several different ideas on this forum, one of which is using projector lenses. I've never really had to do that, so would that be a good option? I don't know that I've encountered much projection glass well-suited for shooting, but maybe I just haven't seen enough. I would really like to stay away from anamorphic adapters. I guess if that's the best option then I can use them, but I've always stuck to the real thing. Last thing, cost is a big factor here. I'm a big fan of quality glass, but I don't use these cameras enough to drop a lot of money on one lens. So if that means I should just get a lens adapter and use some cheap anamorphic glass for a different mount, I can do that. I just want to know what my options are for an adapter-less setup, if that's even possible. Thanks much!

Hello all, I've got a dour situation on my hands with my new Bolex H16. Not sure which model exactly - it's an eBay find - but it has a variable shutter so I think it's an Rx2. It was running fine this evening as I was putting my first roll through. I wanted to try to do a double exposure and rewound the camera a few feet. Then when I re-engaged the motor I heard an unnatural noise. Suffice to say, that motor isn't running any more. I've removed the film - there didn't seem to be any jams. I've tried single frame and slow-speed continuous running but neither have engaged the motor. The crank is tight, like it has a full wind, but won't move in either direction when engaged. And the rewind works... in both directions. Does this sound like a spring problem? Any other ideas? This is my first Bolex and I might have gotten to antsy to try out its special effects...

Shooting a student project on the Bolex H-16 camera, I understand that 25% of light is lost by going into the viewfinder. That means that on a normal light meter it has to be compensated for right? I will be using 250D stock, would setting the ASA on the light meter to 160 compensate for this? and then could I use the light meter as normal? Also is there any common problems or tips and tricks that might be useful for me to know before the shoot? Thanks Will

The focus adjustment ring on my bolex h16 reflex camera is stuck. I have tried focusing the ground glass with the lenses removed and the camera pointed at a bright light source. The ring will move a little bit and I can see the ground glass blurring and sharpening, but I do not have full movement of the ring. I tried losening the screw on the focus ring and re-tightening it, and it still will not budge. It feels as if it is catching on something, I can hear a little clicking noise when I try to turn it. I am thinking that I may need to take apart the diopter to find out what is jamming it up internally. I can't figure out how to do this- apart from tightening and loosening the screw on the focus ring. If it is possible, I would like to try to repair this by myself. Any suggestions?

Does anyone have any experience with this lens? Either on the bolex or otherwise? I believe it is C-mount, and I was hoping to maybe pick one up to test out on a pocket cam. Just wondering if anyone has any positive or negative experiences adapting it to a M43 mount.

I'm having a clearout and so, unfortunately, this has to go. I have used it, it works well, but i have too many things on the go and this just doesnt get the use and love that it really should and i just need to make some room. Its the Bolex Jubilee Super 8 complete in its box, the outer box is a little bit tatty but it has the original sticker on it with the serial number and certificate number so it made sense not to throw it away as it felt like it supports its authenticity. It has the eyecup, the strap, the remote, the certificate (in its original envelope) and even the original purchase receipt from 13/06/1978 although i think the manufacturers warranty may be slightly out of date now, lol. Price....£45? Plus the delivery cost of your choice and i would prefer it to be a "signed for" service so we have insurance and can track it...peace of mind both ways really.

Hey, I've got a Bolex EBM 16mm cam in pretty good condition that doesn't seem to run. I've tested it with multiple power sources and the red light turns on but the motor does not run when you press the button. I've tried to find people with Bolex knowledge in the Vancouver area but have had no luck! Any ideas as to what could be the problem? Or any suggestions as to my next course of action? Thanks in advance!

Hi, I'm a student working on my first short film for a class. I checked out all the equipment I needed to start shooting including a Bolex H16 Reflex movie camera. I put a wind in the camera, went to load the film into it, and realized that it won't run! So now, the camera has sat overnight with a wind in it that I have no way of getting out. And seemingly no one else has had this issue because I couldn't find it in any forums. Can ANYONE please help?!?!?! I'm totally freaking out!

Hi, my name is Brandon Giesbrecht. I am currently living in St.John’s Newfoundland Canada, I have come across a rare find. My grandmother recently past and left me he camera collection. I have an original near mint metal bolex case with a bolex reflex h-15 model#235541 USA PAT. No. 2811075, Externally It is in perfect condition as my grandmother loved and cherished the camera. till 2013 when her cancer hit bad she was still filming movies and developing herself, the camera since then has been stored properly and no dust or mold has consumed the camera or case. I have many extra’s such as an electronic handle, light finder, and range finder I do believe as well two Kern Paillard lenses for the camera. many other extra’s which can be seen in photos attached (sorry about photo quality taken with iPhone), as I have no passion for film making and though I’d love to keep it as a memory. my grandmother left it to me with other possessions to help me with school though this is the most valued and cherished to her I would like to part with it to someone who will use and love it just as much as she did. If you have any questions at all please don’t hesitate to contact me via email, if you are interested with purchase I will accept pretty much any secure method and am willing to pay some or all of shipping cost depending on destination and cost of shipping. Thank you for your time, Brandon Giesbrecht bran.giesbrecht@gmail.com 161 Pleasant St. St.John’s NL, Canada A1E1M1

Ok, this is my first film shot with motion picture film. I read as much as I could about it a jumped right in. This weekend we filmed a very fun and cheesy, short for a Zombie Film Challenge. I'll be sending the footage to the lab on Tuesday. I had a relatively simple one-location story (my garage) with the lighting you see in the photo. In the back, the large white square on the ceiling to the far right behind the practical is a 250 watt Lowel Pro Light. In front there is a 500 Watt Lowel Omni Light and to the far right a 1000 watt Strand Bambino Fresnel on full. I didn't use my light meter. :( I felt a bit unprepared and rushed. I shot with the 16mm Switar wide open the whole time. I may have shot a few seconds with the Switar preset 10mm but that lens for some reason seems confusing to me even though I've read how to use it. I shot most of the garage scenes on Vison 500T and some on Vision 200T and one on Vision3 200T. My question is do you think I should order 1 - 2 stop Push processing for the garage footage given the film stock used, the lighting conditions and me shooting wide open? Thanks.

Hello again. I'd posted some photos of a blimp I bought off of ebay for the Bolex H-16 (http://www.cinematography.com/index.php?showtopic=61757&hl=). It came with a motor but I wasn't sure about the motor's accuracy so I removed it. I also own a Tobin TCS TXM-20Ba Bolex Crystal Sync Motor. I want to use the Tobin motor in the blimp but the motor sticking out of it is just a little bit too tall for the camera to go all the way in place with the motor attached. So I got this bright idea (or not so bright maybe) that I would replace that motor with a shorter motor of equivalent specs/function. These are the specs of the motor currently installed on the Tobin crystal unit: Mabuchi RS-555 VD - 12V - 13500 RPM - High Torque Motor Manufacturer: Mabuchi Model: RS555 VD Operates on 12 VDC nominal No load speed: 13,500 RPM No load current: .75 A 5 pole armature Stall current: 60 A Can be operated in either direction, simply reverse power supply polarity Dimensions (not including shaft): 65mm long x 38mm diameter Shaft dimensions: 3.3mm diameter x 9mm long Weight: .55 LBS Comes with solder eyelets for power connection Here is a slightly shorter motor I recently bought in hopes of swapping the two out. Specification: Product Name: DC Micro Motor Model NO.: 540 Rated Voltage: DC 8-12V Current(no load): 3A Rated Power: 28W Speed(no load): 13500RPM Rated Torque: 1900g.cm Body Size: 36 x 50mm / 1.4" x 2" (D*H) Shaft Dia.: 3mm/ 0.12" Total Length: 75mm / 3" Main Color: Silver Tone Material: Metal, Plastic Weight: 131g Package: 1 x DC Micro Motor Description: Round shape and with 3mm diameter long shaft and 2 pin connectors. My question: Is the new motor a suitable/equivalent replacement for the original motor? I thought it was but I'm just not 100% sure and thought I'd ask anyone who is more savvy with electronics before I go taking the Tobin motor apart. I think the new motor will allow me to use the Tobin unit in the blimp but it would be even better if I could get an even shorter motor. If anyone knows of an even shorter equivalent, please let me know. :)

Hi There, I made this super cheap video assist from a camera I'd bought a little while ago but thought didn't work (not sure why). The cameras are on sale for a little less than $8. They are light enough for gaff tape to hold them on to the viewfinder (at least until you find a permanent solution) and they are good enough for framing for sure. This was on a Rex 5 with 13x viewfinder. I will try it on the 10x tomorrow. I think they have some kind of automatic gain which really does help make it brighter than the Bolex viewfinder would ever be to the naked eye. But the image is also not that great under normal household light but one wouldn't be shooting under those lighting conditions I would hope. :) You can see more photos and ready about it more here: http://www.threewestcreative.com/12-dollar-bolex-video-assist/ You can get the cameras here while they last (looks like they also have the same ones for less than $7 too if you look at their inventory) : http://www.ebay.com/itm/291002399506 I have a 1k Bambino with diffusion in front going on there so the edges of the video view can be seen. It doesn't zoom in enough to be edge to edge though. The lens is 3.5-8mm. I'm not sure how this will look once in a real world situation where you'll have the lens stopped down for the best exposure. I'm sure I'll find out soon enough. Cheers!

I just got a Bolex H-16 Blimp in the mail today. I bought it on Ebay. The seller really didn't do this thing justice. WOW! I can't wait to test it and see if I can get my Rex5 in there or if I can swap out the motor it came with for the Tobin sync I have. It's roomy in there and everything can be unbolted out if need be. Worse case, I can use it as is with a regular H-16. Anyone familiar with these? It was made by some engineering company called Sonex. These photos make it look small but it's pretty huge... I have to put this on one of my big beast/crane tripods.
