  10. I just purchased a Canon Cine Zoom model 512 8mm camera off ebay and the spring driven mechanism makes a clunk sound and locks up. Is this camera worth fixing? Who would you recommend if it is worth it. Thanks
  11. Hi everybody! One of my biggest fears on set is to fry camera accessories because of misunderstanding of voltage etc etc. I know that some accessories like TV logic need 12 volts while other like follow focus motors etc need 24 volts. What I do not understand is how do I know which voltahe is the correct for each accessories and what's the voltage of each power port (If I'm not wrong RS ports are 24v while Dtap is 12-18). Is there any rule of thumbs or does anybody have a more defines explanations that goes beyond my knowledge of the topic? My understanding of electricity is pretty basic too. Thank you in advance for the help!

  14. For sale is my beautiful 2-perf (Techniscope) Arri 3C (IIIC) camera package. This camera was never a rental and it looks like it's hardly ever been used, it's in such beautiful condition. I've owned it since 2009 and during that time I found and bought an original Arri factory 2-perf conversion kit, which was installed by the technicians at Clairmont Camera in North Hollywood. I'm guessing everyone here knows why 2-perf is so great. But just in case... basically you get twice the run time from the same amount of film. A 400' roll of 35mm film running at 24 fps lasts about 8 minutes instead of the usual 4 minutes. A 200' short end is suddenly not a pain to work with since it lasts about 4 minutes. So that means you spend half as much money on film stock and processing since that's paid by the foot, too. The aspect ratio is naturally 2.40:1 at the gate so it's well suited to that cinemascope look, but much less expensive than anamorphic on film stock/processing (not to mention lens rental costs). If you wanted to shoot 1.85:1 on this camera, you could have the ground glass pencilled with two vertical lines to create 1.85 within the 2.40, and you'd still have roughly twice as much negative area than if you shot 1.85 on Super 16. I know of a feature film that just wrapped which did exactly that. Some recent and beautifully-shot 2-perf films: "Hunger", "Shame", "The Place Beyond the Pines", "American Hustle", "The Fighter", "Silver Linings Playbook", to name a few. Bracket pictured in hand held mode is not included) - 1x Unknown Brand Balance Plate Top A35/S35 switchable, like BP-9 (for 15mm rods) - 1x Van Diemen Balance Plate Bottom (Dovetail) ~12" - 2x 12V 4-pin XLR to 4-pin XLR power cables, one with a pigtail - 3x Power Cables for Jurgen's Video Door - 2x Medium Carbon Fiber rods (15mm) - 2x Medium rods (15mm) - 2x Short rods (15mm) - 1x SR2/SR3 type LWS 15mm bracket with 2x screw-in extension rods (for attaching to front of CE Flat Crystal Motor Base - Arri grease The inching knob (shutter/frame advance knob) has three holes drilled in it which was done to attach a hand-crank module from Clairmont Camera for a commercial (shot before the 2-perf conversion). Due to the 2-perf conversion, the Cinematography Electronics Crystal motor base does not count footage correctly. Simply divide the readout by half for an accurate footage count. I've created an album on Flickr with quite a few photos. On the wide photo with everything, you may notice two smudges. I've erased two items which I realized after the fact have no relevance or use with this package. I've also included some frame grabs from a music video I made with this camera after the 2-perf conversion. It was a joy to shoot with, performing flawlessly with not one instance of a hair in the gate. It was almost entirely shot with short ends of 200' or less. If you're not familiar with the 3C, you could think of it as the final refinement of the 2C before the Arri 35-3 came out, mostly designed as a result of engineering Arri did to the 2C for the German WW2 film "Das Boot". It has an orientable door which keeps the horizon level as you reposition the eyepiece up or down (on the 2 doors here that let you swivel the eyepiece up/down). It has a more sturdy hinged door (not interchangeable with the Arri 35-3 door), unlike the metal prongs which hold the 2C door to the body. That design was never intended for the weight of a Jurgen's video door and I've seen a few 2C bodies that are wearing out where these prongs grip, making it risky that the door could fall off. The 3C came from the factory with a PL mount, and it has a very nice crystal handgrip motor which is often sought after since it works just as well on the 2C. Something else I like about the 3C, they have a variable shutter, something that's hard to find on a 2C. The 3C also has a rosette for mounting accessories, right by the inching knob. The 2C doesn't have that. This is a beautiful example of the very rare Arri IIIC. The 3C movement is the same as the 2C movement and motors, mags and of course ground glasses are interchangeable. It took me many years to assemble this package so at least initially, I won't consider splitting off pieces of it. It seems it would be someone of high driving skill turned camera car operator. The amount of skill it seems to take for these types of moves is amazing.
  16. So I am trying to look into Renting equipment for 14 Days for an Indie Film. The issue is we only have about 6K to spend for a FULL Camera Kit and Lenses. Mind you I have a good tripod, but obviously need all the working parts. Im really contemplating a Canon C300 MKII for 4K C-Log, with either a Zeiss CP2 Kit (which is much cheaper, under budget it seems) or a Set of Cooke S4 Primes which puts us right on target, maybe a hair expensive. I'm a stickler for quality and this film is really in need of that "David Fincher" Style usually locked off on a tripod, so no need for handheld rigs, but needs to have a very "anamorphic" look and almost like 35mm Film Stock! Im not a Cinematography Pro, I just really need something that does well in low light, doesnt need to be like an A7s, but that NAILS Color and the overall feel of things. Hope someone has some ideas!   17. Hey! First post over here on the non lighting side... So I am looking into purchasing a new kit for myself-I do a lot of Independent Music Videos, Travel Docs....etc. Currently I have several GoPro's in my package, with a Canon 7d-the 7d I am pretty sick of at this point. I would like to upgrade to a Sony a7s ..or the a7sii, maybe even the r if I can get a good argument. I do a lot of lowlight with the Travel stuff so I need something pretty versatile. I've heard the rolling shutter is terrible though. I came across the Aja Cion; and I've never really heard of this camera but a few tests seemed alright outside of it's lack of dynamic range. I was just wondering on some opinions for these! If anyones used them in a Travel Scenario; or just any recommendations and facts I may have missed would be helpful. I just want to get the most bang for my buck-but also make some quality video (also any lens rec's would be awesome..i know the E Mount is a pain). Thanks!

  19. Hi Everyone, I'm moving to South America in May and the time has come for me to purge items I simply can't take with me and/or never use. I'm sure many of you know this is painful. But there is no sense in me keeping these items in storage. I've tried to price them as low as I can to get rid of them quickly. There is some wiggle room for some of the more expensive items. I bought it to shoot a film noir but couldn't raise the budget and can't take it with me so it's for sale. It works fine and it works great with the blimp below. I bought this used from a dealer.   22. Hello all, Well I am new to this web site and I hope my post hasn't been addressed before (I searched the forum of course). I appreciate your patience reading my rather long post, also introducing myself - I apologize if I'm drifting off topic for a moment. :-) Well I am considering starting to pick up a film camera again. I was a Super 8mm user back in the day (1975 through 1981) and I never got the results I was looking for and I don't see that format ever yielding truly satisfying results (in my humble opinion and for what I have in mind, not to be disrespectful!), even with all recent efforts (Pro8mm, Logmar, Kodak's new planned camera line and film stock turnaround - for 2016....). I never bought a video camera/camcorder, because I just don't like the look at all, even the most skillfully graded footage I have seen (it's always glassy, harsh and "digital" looking). Just to fill you in: I worked small jobs at the Frankfurt tv station "HR" (1977 - 83), and got a lot of insight regarding the sweet old Arriflex 16mm cameras, film loading, servicing, editing on the Steenbecks, in-house processing and the old machines where the films were aired "live" as opposed to telecine transfer which was still in its infancy - those (then) professional 16mm cameras were still in heavy use for all kinds of television productions. I studied photography and cinematography at the University, but I knew it would lead me nowhere - so I dropped out. I went full time for music, a decision I never regretted - but true motion picture film (even with all its hassle) is still my passion. Recently I checked on Ebay: there are a handful of K-3 cameras for sale and most are converted to Super 16mm including re-centering the lens. Most are coming from the Ucraine and Bielarus. Prices are very affordable. I know that the first two numbers of the serial number represent the production year (please correct me if I'm wrong). One model is as recent as 1989 (last production run) - so I should be able to purchase later some nice, sharp prime lenses. Here are my questions: 1) Has anyone purchased an already modified Super 16mm K-3? Is the optical axis really 100% re-centered? Is the new, widened film gate safe regarding scratching the film? I don't see any shifting to the side on the photos regarding the lens adapter ring.... 2) is the view finder normally modified to match the new format? I wouldn't mind it not being wider, as long as the center is exactly natching film gate and optical axis - and as long as I know when unwanted vignetting occurs. I don't mind some guess work. I'm "old school" if it's necessary :-) 2) Would it be recommendable to remove the loop guides right away and hand-load, to eliminate the chance of scratches? 3) I don't have anyone who could service the camera nearby - so how reliable is it regarding motor speed, mechanics? I plan on mainly filming at 24 fps - perhaps some slow motion at the highest speed possible... 4) is it recommendable to purchase a battery adapter kit since the old, discontinued batteries are usually dead and new ones read to wrong read outs. I will eventually purchase a separate light meter, but the use is not always feasible since I plan on filming mostly spontaneously what I see (as opposed to an improvised studio set up) - some of it for use in music videos. No problem with filming wild (no crystal sync motor needed) as long as the actual film speed is close enough to 24 fps. I don't plan on purchasing a fully serviced K-3 from the US. I am located in Portugal and the costs would be too high for an entry-level camera (will check it out anyway). BUT I see a lot of K-3 footage, both 16mm and Super 16mm (YouTube and Vimeo) which clearly have focus issues. Some shots are razor sharp though (even when considering it's Super 16mm) so it must be a lens issue. I thought about a Super 16mm converted Bolex, but these are much more expensive and also seem to have issues. Do these wind up cameras handle the modern Kodak Vision 3 neg film stock well (jamming, lost loops, jitter, etc.). Any hints and tips highly appreciated. Thanks a lot for reading.   24. Hello Cinema Community! I have a music video client who would like psychedelic images in her music video: Options include fractals, light prism effects, kaleidoscopic imagery etc. I am curious, is anyone aware of practical solutions to achieving an end result similar to what I listed above? I realize that I could achieve much of this via a program like After Effects; however, I am curious if doing something like this practically would produce something more organic. If anyone has any experience with this, it would be great to know what methods you used, in addition to seeing visual references of the end result. Lastly, this project is on a shoe string budget!
