  1. Hi everyone! This is my first post here on the forums. I saw a video recently on Facebook showcasing the camera cars and carnage in Fast & Furious 5, which is here: https://www.facebook.com/brendan.riel/posts/10209207881700944 It got me thinking, how would one even begin to get a career path like this? It seems it would be someone of high driving skill turned camera car operator. The amount of skill it seems to take for these types of moves is amazing.
  2. Hey! First post over here on the non lighting side... So I am looking into purchasing a new kit for myself-I do a lot of Independent Music Videos, Travel Docs....etc. Currently I have several GoPro's in my package, with a Canon 7d-the 7d I am pretty sick of at this point. I would like to upgrade to a Sony a7s ..or the a7sii, maybe even the r if I can get a good argument. I do a lot of lowlight with the Travel stuff so I need something pretty versatile. I've heard the rolling shutter is terrible though. I came across the Aja Cion; and I've never really heard of this camera but a few tests seemed alright outside of it's lack of dynamic range. I was just wondering on some opinions for these! If anyones used them in a Travel Scenario; or just any recommendations and facts I may have missed would be helpful. I just want to get the most bang for my buck-but also make some quality video (also any lens rec's would be awesome..i know the E Mount is a pain). Thanks!
  3. I have a regular 18fps Nautica, I would really like a fully working 24fps one too. :)

  5. Does anyone have experience shooting slo-mo that the editor will then speed up to real time in post? What shutter angle makes the most sense for best results of motion blur on both ends? Most likely shooting at 60 fps. Thanks.
  6. Hey guys, So as most of these post start out, my budget is slim to none. Now that that aspect is out there. Im DPing a short that takes place in a car at night. the two characters in the car are being followed because of something they have and they are trying to get away from whoever is following them. Thats where the "chase" aspect comes into play. Its no James Bond chase scene but need to feel like they are trying to ditch the car following them. The short is only 5 mins long and will take place half in urban/city area but they head to a more deserted beach area. The picture attcahed is the tunnels location we will shoot EXT shots of the cars driving out of the city. So for all the shots of the two actors in the hero car we would have to mimic the lighting to match what our location offers, multiple sodium vapor lights overhead. My biggest question is how I could go about shooting this section of the film to achieve the following... 1. See the actual tunnel when we have shots looking out windows (rear window, side windows, and front windows) 2. Match the lighting of the tunnel as they pass through. Theres the green screen option where we could shoot the scene. Then take those camera setting (lens, focal length, height etc) and then shoot plates. I feel there is alot of room for error with this option We rent a car trailer from uhaul and rig everything and shoot it practically that way. (cant afford a process trailer) Only issue here is the budget is so small i dont think they could get the permits for such a thing, feel like they could get in trouble having actors in a car on a trailer without proper permission, permits, police escorts, etc Lastly we have the actors actually drive the car through this area rig cameras to the car and have them drive safe and we sell the chase part in the edit. Sounds the easiest but biggest worry is safety. There are alot of factors with shooting car stuff. I appreciate you guys taking the time to read this and help out!! Cheers!!

  8. Hello all, Well I am new to this web site and I hope my post hasn't been addressed before (I searched the forum of course). I appreciate your patience reading my rather long post, also introducing myself - I apologize if I'm drifting off topic for a moment. :-) Well I am considering starting to pick up a film camera again. I was a Super 8mm user back in the day (1975 through 1981) and I never got the results I was looking for and I don't see that format ever yielding truly satisfying results (in my humble opinion and for what I have in mind, not to be disrespectful!), even with all recent efforts (Pro8mm, Logmar, Kodak's new planned camera line and film stock turnaround - for 2016....). I never bought a video camera/camcorder, because I just don't like the look at all, even the most skillfully graded footage I have seen (it's always glassy, harsh and "digital" looking). Just to fill you in: I worked small jobs at the Frankfurt tv station "HR" (1977 - 83), and got a lot of insight regarding the sweet old Arriflex 16mm cameras, film loading, servicing, editing on the Steenbecks, in-house processing and the old machines where the films were aired "live" as opposed to telecine transfer which was still in its infancy - those (then) professional 16mm cameras were still in heavy use for all kinds of television productions. I studied photography and cinematography at the University, but I knew it would lead me nowhere - so I dropped out. I went full time for music, a decision I never regretted - but true motion picture film (even with all its hassle) is still my passion. Recently I checked on Ebay: there are a handful of K-3 cameras for sale and most are converted to Super 16mm including re-centering the lens. Most are coming from the Ucraine and Bielarus. Prices are very affordable. I know that the first two numbers of the serial number represent the production year (please correct me if I'm wrong). One model is as recent as 1989 (last production run) - so I should be able to purchase later some nice, sharp prime lenses. Here are my questions: 1) Has anyone purchased an already modified Super 16mm K-3? Is the optical axis really 100% re-centered? Is the new, widened film gate safe regarding scratching the film? I don't see any shifting to the side on the photos regarding the lens adapter ring.... 2) is the view finder normally modified to match the new format? I wouldn't mind it not being wider, as long as the center is exactly natching film gate and optical axis - and as long as I know when unwanted vignetting occurs. I don't mind some guess work. I'm "old school" if it's necessary :-) 2) Would it be recommendable to remove the loop guides right away and hand-load, to eliminate the chance of scratches? 3) I don't have anyone who could service the camera nearby - so how reliable is it regarding motor speed, mechanics? I plan on mainly filming at 24 fps - perhaps some slow motion at the highest speed possible... 4) is it recommendable to purchase a battery adapter kit since the old, discontinued batteries are usually dead and new ones read to wrong read outs. I will eventually purchase a separate light meter, but the use is not always feasible since I plan on filming mostly spontaneously what I see (as opposed to an improvised studio set up) - some of it for use in music videos. No problem with filming wild (no crystal sync motor needed) as long as the actual film speed is close enough to 24 fps. I don't plan on purchasing a fully serviced K-3 from the US. I am located in Portugal and the costs would be too high for an entry-level camera (will check it out anyway). BUT I see a lot of K-3 footage, both 16mm and Super 16mm (YouTube and Vimeo) which clearly have focus issues. Some shots are razor sharp though (even when considering it's Super 16mm) so it must be a lens issue. I thought about a Super 16mm converted Bolex, but these are much more expensive and also seem to have issues. Do these wind up cameras handle the modern Kodak Vision 3 neg film stock well (jamming, lost loops, jitter, etc.). Any hints and tips highly appreciated. Thanks a lot for reading. Best wishes, Christian
  9. Hello Cinema Community! I have a music video client who would like psychedelic images in her music video: Options include fractals, light prism effects, kaleidoscopic imagery etc. I am curious, is anyone aware of practical solutions to achieving an end result similar to what I listed above? I realize that I could achieve much of this via a program like After Effects; however, I am curious if doing something like this practically would produce something more organic. If anyone has any experience with this, it would be great to know what methods you used, in addition to seeing visual references of the end result. Lastly, this project is on a shoe string budget!

  11. For Sale: http://www.ebay.com/itm/-/111868638592? Cinema Products Crystal Sync 16mm motion picture camera package CP-16R camera body 10-150mm zoom in CP-mount Fully orient-able viewfinder - rare! Regular viewfinder - prisms needs re-silvered. 3x 400' magazines with core adapters 3-pin XLR Dummy Battery Adapter Custom AC adapter TWO Anvil Flight cases This camera and lens were completely serviced by Visual Products, back focus was checked on the zoom lens, and belts were replaced. This camera runs very well. This camera is NOT Super16, it has never been modified. The camera features a built in light meter which appears to register about 1/2 stop different from my hand held meter. Camera sync light, and mirror return work great. This camera does not include the sound head as found on some models. Please contact to see actual 2K scanned 16mm footage from this camera. Flat shipping of $55, it will likely cost more to ship, but I hate charging people too much for shipping. I make every effort to package items I sell as best possible. This camera will be packaged in bubble rap, placed in its padded flight case, and then shipped. The Lens will be wrapped, placed in its separate flight case and shipped. This item is listed on Ebay, feel free to message me about this item - if it sells here, I will pull the auction. For anyone on this forum, I'll throw in the Arri S/B to CP mount adapter from Visual Products ($475 I think is the current price) which lets you use any Arri standard or bayonet mount lenses on this camera. Some of the older lenses will interface with the spinning mirror, but the later serial numbers do not. http://imgur.com/a/jnnpv Please feel free to ask questions!

  16. Hey Guys, I'm an aspiring cinematographer and I am wondering how best to spend my money to invest in this field. At first, I was dead sent on buying on new camera (looking at the A7s II or the Ursa Mini); however, I have now begun to consider investing in lighting equipment, and opting to rent a camera whenever the need arises. Basically I'm torn: For $3,000 I could buy just a camera body, or I could get an Arri lighting package (x2 150w, 300w, 650w, 1k) and two 4' 2-bank kino lights w/ ballasts off of Ebay. My questions are: Can anyone provide insight into what would be the best and most beneficial course of action? I also have another question based off of the Kino lights: is the output of a 4' 2-bank Kino the same as the output of a 2' 4-bank Kino? What are the benefits to either or? Lastly, is there a better investment I could make that isn't a camera or lighting equipment? Thanks again, and any insight will be greatly appreciated! -Sam

  19. I have the opportunity to purchase a used Arri D-21 from a local rental shop for $6000. I have heard that the D-21 footage has a unique film like quality that surpasses most cameras, even the Alexa. Although it's dynamic range is limited to 11 stops and low lightcapabilities seem to be quite poor. Can those of you who have used the D-21 please share your experiences.
  20. Hello all, I just recently shot a roll of Kodak 35mm color film, 24 exposures 400 ISO, on a Canon AE-1. However, I brought the camera into a dark room to check and see if the film had been entirely used (for there have been times in the past when the film didn't catch onto the spindle) and I noticed that the film was completely severed from the cartridge. This is my first time to use this particular camera, so I'm wondering how could this happen? I thought I had rolled all the film back into the cartridge after taking all 24 exposures. Thanks, John

  24. Hey, I am a Film Studies student and hope to make a stop-motion animation as a side project. I was just wondering what DSLR-type sensor you would recommend for the project (have to be under £600) and what software? I'm hoping for a cheaper version of DragonFrame... Well, actually, camera wise I've been looking at the Canon EOS M3 or the Nikon D3300 (which is an SLR). What do you think about either of these or could you think of an alternative? I really appreciate you reading this and if you answer, thank you very much.
  25. On RealityKings' website they have a site called Street********. I would like to know, what camera is used in these scenes? I'll post some images from different scenes, (non-pornographic) and wonder what you guys think. I think they're handheld cameras, but that's all I think.
