  1. With the advent of the 4/3 mount system a wide variety of lenses are now availble for use in HD and 4K acquisition. Lenses produced prior to the digital era may provide a specific look but for general production may not provide adequate resolution for HD or 4K production. Is there a standard suggested minimum resolution for lenses used for 4K acquisition? Are lower end lenses such as the Bower series and still lenses such as the Canon EF series of significant resolution to meet the requirements of 4K?

  3. Hello guys. Need help finding a focus ring to adapt into my Schneider 16mm lenses. The problem is the circumference of the focus ring on the lens is 165mm. Redrock Micro has the type "A" ring with the minimum of 180mm. Years ago I've bought from Shoot35 in UK a model that fits perfectly, but they dont' have it anymore. I need 3 more. I know there are the universal 'malleable' rings, but I need the ones that have a larger diameter outside, to reach the follow focus gear. I've been looking around all the web, not even on eBay I could find, new or used. Any help much appreciated. Regards, Flavio

  5. Hey Guys, I'm looking to increase the visual quality of my work by upgrading glass. Right now, I'm primarily working with Canon stills glass (24mm, 50mm, 85mm, 70-200mm), but i want to get a new lens set to take me to the next level. Just for discussions sake, my budget for each lens would be anywhere from $2-5,000. Do you guys have any suggestions? I'm open to either primes or zooms. Thanks, Sam
  6. Hello, I've been searching for a while now on how to achieve this effect. Here's a perfect example: It's the beautiful ghosting effect when the light hits the lens at particular times. It looks as though some kind of classic soft filter and they're letting light leak behind it? Or is this a separate piece of glass? Thanks! Chris
  7. Hello, I am capturing high-speed videos of water droplets using a PhotonFocus TrackCam (C-mount), capable of 1000+ fps. The lens I was using was a Computar 18-108mm/f2.5-16, that was lying around. I was able to have decent focus for one droplet (diameter of ~1 mm), but was having trouble getting a DOF for multiple droplets close together, shot from a little over a foot away. What lens would you recommend to use in order to have ~5mm DOF with a magnification of 1-2X? The lenses I have found so far online are either capable of doing one or the other (DOF/magnification), but not both. {I am already lighting the scene for 1000+ fps} Any help would be appreciated, Josh

  10. I very much love my CP-16. I found at an incredibly low price a Arri B/standard to CP mount adapter - it's the unit that Visual Products sold a while back. So, where have all the Arri B/Standard mount lenses gone? I'm looking to build a prime kit. I would like to find a normal or wide to start with, 25mm or 18mm or so. For that matter, where are all of the CP primes? I'm totally open to using Russian glass as well, provided I don't need to completely rehouse the lenses. For those that might be tempted: No, I would rather not sell my cp-16 and buy (insert name of "better" camera here). For that matter, I don't wish to purchase a new set of whatever for $60,000... I also refuse to pay $5000 for a single 50 year old prime. If it comes to that I'll just buy a new one. Not trying to be hateful, just where my thoughts are currently. Edit: I may not be totally opposed to changing the camera to PL mount, if that's the way things just... "are".
  11. Hey Guys, I have been recently hired to shoot a short feature and have been asked for my preference in lens selection. The director wants to shoot on Arri/Zeiss Master Primes (T1.3) on a Sony F5 camera system. Would you have any recommendations on focal lengths? In regard to the production, there will be mostly interiors with a few exterior moments, the story is very personal among the few characters involved, and the director is using Emmanel Lubezki as a primary visual influence. I was personally thinking of just a 35, 50 and 85mm set... Thanks! Sam
  12. Hi - Im shooting a project in the next couple of weeks which has a very 'trippy' rave sequence to it and I am looking for experimental lens techniques to echo this. Looking for both specialist lenses (like the Panavision HS50 used in Killing Them Softly(attached REF image)) but also more DIY approaches (such as gripping Icelandic Spar or prisms in-front of the lens) Any help would be massively appreciated!
  13. Hi all. This is my first post as a member. I'm thinking that this is the place to get some answers to a new project. I recently purchased a Baltar 75mm f2.3 lens. I'm attaching a photo, that will show you the mount. I got it at a deeply discounted price, so I thought that there are two possible options for it: 1. re-sell 2. find a way to convert/adapt the lens to be used on my Canon 5DMkII *** this is preferred, I'm a still photographer, but love old lenses I have been searching online for companies that work with old lenses, and most will clean lenses, but do not offer conversion service. But I'm assuming that I'm looking in the wrong places. So here are my questions so far, for which I have no answers: 1. what lens mount does this lens have? 2.Is there an adapter to EOS, or to another mount (M42?) that could be adapted to fit? 3. Doe this lens have the ability to focus, or is it in the camera mount? 4. I have seen this lens mounted into what looks like a Nikon 50mm f1.8 deconstructed lens. This might be interesting, but I can't find the person who is doing it, or any technical info on how to do the conversion. Any other information about would also be greatly appreciated. Thanks, -John
  14. I'm going to be focus pulling on a short film for a couple days starting tomorrow. In terms of camera kit it's all fairly simple, we're shooting Amira with a CP.2 prime kit. We're going to be using an arri LMB-15 mattebox, with 4x5.65 filter trays. Due to being busy this week, I wasn't able to attend prep at the kit house with the DOP. Something I haven't worked with yet are Diopters, and we have a set of 138mm diopters on this shoot. I've seen them used before on a set I was 2nd ACing on, but didn't pay as much attention as I should have towards how the 1st AC placed the diopters into the mattebox. Am I right in saying that diopters sit in a tray just behind the mattebox? If anyone can offer any advice that would be great, I'm sure it's simple, but if I learn anything new now I can avoid any mess ups tomorrow morning.

  16. Hello everyone, We are conducting a study on ILCs (Interchangeable Lens Cameras) In New York and are looking for people to participate. Currently we need some cinematographers who use DSLR and/or CSC cameras. We especially need CSC users. If you have friends that could also participate please share this information. It will be a 2 hour Focus Group Discussion and if you take part we will compensate your time by $150. A focus group discussion is where we invite a group of people to talk about their experiences with a certain product, in this case ILCs. We would like to speak to you to find out how we can improve upon our products. However, there are a few criteria that you must meet to take part: • Owner and user of an ILC DSLR or CSC; • Aged between 25-50; • Must own at least 2 lenses for main system (excluding bundle/kit lenses); • Must have purchased a lens within the last 2 years. If you meet the above criteria, it is very likely that you will qualify for our study. If interested, please fill out our pre-survey in the link below. If you qualify, we will reach out to you with an invitation to take part in our focus group.https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/ZP89GMW Many thanks in advance.
  17. I purchased a Chinese Arri knock-off and while the output is decent with the lens, I think I'd benefit more from the light if I could use it as a lensless open-face. My questions are: A) Is this safe/doable and B) How would I adapt this safely? Thanks The light: http://www.amazon.com/Top-Fotos-Tungsten-Continuous-Lighting-Spotlight/dp/B00OPNR920/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1433529785&sr=8-1&keywords=1000w+fresnel

  21. So I bought the Angenieux 17-68mm f/2.2 c-mount lens for my MFT cameras and I am wanting to use my variable ND filter on it. Obviously I needed a step up ring adaptor. I read at vintagelensesforvideo.com in the comments section of the post about this lens that it was most likely a series 7 filter. So I bought a series 7 to 58mm adaptor; I was way too big. I then bought a series 6 to series 7 adaptor; this was barely too small. I've gone to all the local Dallas/Fort Worth camera shops and they all have no clue. Does anyone know what the front filter specifications are for this lens? Any help much appreciated! Alex

  25. Hi all. I wonder if anyone owns the Nikon G to BMPCC Speed Booster from Metabones? It says it works with Nikon G lens. But my question is: Would this work with a Zeiss ZF.2 Nikon mount? I've seen reviews of many people mentioning only Nikkor an Sigma lenses used with this adapter. But I need to know if it works with the Zeiss. Thanks, Flavio
