The American Society of Cinematographers (ASC) is now taking submissions for the television competition of its 33rd Annual ASC Awards for Outstanding Achievement in Cinematography. The event, which will also salute the organization’s 100th anniversary, takes place February 9, 2019, at the Ray Dolby Ballroom at Hollywood & Highland, and winners will be announced in all categories. Three categories comprise the TV awards: • Episode of a Television Series – Commercial (half hour and one hour) • Episode of a Television Series – Non-Commercial (half hour and one hour) • Motion Picture, Miniseries, or Pilot Made for TV The deadline to enter is November 5 by 5 p.m. (PT). To qualify, shows must have a premiere broadcast date in the United States between November 1, 2017, and October 31, 2018. Entry forms can be downloaded at here on the ASC website. In addition to the TV awards, the ASC gala in February will recognize the year’s best feature film cinematography, as well as lifetime honorees. I am trying to find if any major tv series were broadcast in scope aspect ratio? I know some shows such as The Walking Dead and True Detective s02 were shot anamorphic with a 16:9 extraction, but looking on line I was not able to find any series broadcast in scope except a british show called Broadchurch which apparently was shot anamorphic for 2:1 screening. Also the great doco Wild Wild Country was shot scope (seems anamorphic). Any other thoughts?

Hi, What does an agent typically collect commission on for a dp on a television series? Specifically, do they take 10% for meal penalties, straight and overtime travel time, holiday pay, per diem, kit rental? I know they take for the actual salaryand the overtime, but these other items on the paystub, I want to make sure. I'm new to having an agent and don't want to be taken advantage of. I did some research and found what agent commissions for SAG/AFTRA, but this is different.

Last year’s winners were Jonathan Freeman, ASC for the “Golden Days for Boys and Girls” episode of BOARDWALK EMPIRE, and John Lindley, ASC for the for the MANHATTAN pilot. Chartered in January of 1919, the ASC is defined by their reputation of excellence in advancing the art of visual storytelling. Currently, the ASC has more than 360 active members and 200-plus associate members, all from various sectors of the industry that support the skilled art and craft of filmmaking. Membership and associate membership is achieved through invitation only. Awards Gala Set for February 14, 2016 LOS ANGELES (September 9, 2015) - Celebrating 30 years of recognizing outstanding achievements in cinematography, the American Society of Cinematographers (ASC) is now accepting entries in their annual television competition. The two awards in this category are (1) Television Movie, Miniseries or Pilot, and (2) an Episode of a Regular Series. The deadline for submissions is November 2 by noon (PST). The winners will be announced at the awards gala on February 14, 2016, at the Hyatt Regency Century City. Accolades for Lifetime Achievement, Career Achievement in Television, and the ASC President's Award will also be presented. Additional honors bestowed that night include the coveted feature film award, along with the Spotlight Award, which recognizes the cinematography of non-mainstream projects typically screened at film festivals, internationally or in limited theatrical release. To qualify for the ASC TV awards, shows must have a premiere broadcast date in the United States between November 1, 2014, and October 31, 2015. Entry forms can be downloaded from the ASC website. Very big move for a company like Amazon, however, it was expected after all the money they put on developing new teams for their studios and production positions and how well they performed on smaller productions. http://variety.com/t/amazon-studios/ http://techcrunch.com/2015/01/19/amazon-studios-to-produce-original-films-for-theatrical-release/ It wants to market the indie community, which is really good. Their plan for distribution is fab too, let's see if it works though, I hope so! Have a good day!

I shot my first short film "A Fistful of Feathers" with Director of Photography, Tom Hanmer, back in December and finished up post in May. Tom used his beautifully sharp Leica Zooms and his newly acquired motion mount. Amazing way to shoot. Wicked fast adjustments. .1 ND increments all day long. A great way to work on a tight schedule.

Hi guys, I'm not a cinematographer but I came a cress this beautiful camera, a Debrie 16mm. It has been used by the Swedish Televison company as it says on the case. Comes with 4 film holders (!!??). I want to sell it and you are welcome to come with proposals. I got more photos to email

Hi everyone! I'd like to ask what you think about the following, If you were to shoot a multicam television show in 4K to future proof it for the coming UHD technology and broadcast specs.... what would you shoot it with? I was looking at the pros and cons of renting either RED Epic, RED Scarlet, Sony F55 CineAlta, and the Panasonic 4K Varicam. How would you keep cost low as possible while maintaining a smooth workflow for a 3 unit camera setup? And what would you do differently for a talk show as opposed to a reality show? For a talk show, I've been told 60fps in HD is the normal recording format to give a live feel, I was under the impression that was the case only because many television cameras captured frames interlaces and not progressive? So considering most of these 4K cameras (I think) capture progressive, would 60fps still be needed? And to wrap this up with a final question, how would you both stream each of the 3 4K feeds to a switch as well as record all 3 stream individually? While keeping costs as low as possible. Sorry for all the questions, it's just it's a new frontier and I haven't found a whole lot published about this.

I've got a scene to light where the script suggests the key light for the action is coming from a television screen. Characters will also be 'flicking' through the channels. I'm sure there are lots of cool tricks and methods to simulate this. What have people had success with? What should be avoided? Cheers Dan

If you could pick one title sequence, such as from a T.V. show or a movie, which one would you pick? Why would you pick it and why do you like it so much? Mine, at this moment, is the opening sequence for the 2001-2005 HBO series Six Feet Under. Every scene of that opening is a work of art. It is all reflections, and a wonderful mix of out of focus/focus. Slight dissolve magic. Beautiful things make me happy, which is why I want to get into this business. I want to make people feel the things I feel from a good piece of film.
