  1. I was listening to Good. The Podcast and the interviewee is Sean Porter (Green Book, Kumiko the Treasure Hunter) and he mentions how in the past some cinematographers were able to get work because they own a cinema camera package. After listening to this my friend and I are interested in investing in a package. My friend wants to invest in an Alexa Classic - mainly due to budget - but is it really a good idea to buy one in today's market? I know that having work experience, lighting knowledge, networking etc really help to get opportunities but I'm wondering from other's experience
  2. Hey everyone, I have a question I'm sure that gets brought up a lot, but I'd figure I'd ask anyway. How do you all go about finding your gigs and your work? More so, how do gigs/ producers find you? It seems in this industry when you ask someone these question, everyone wants to stay very secretive about it because they feel the need to protect where they're source is. So I wanted to post this here to see if any one would be willing to discuss this. Thanks in advance and happy filming!
  3. Hey all, I was recently drafting my personal contract which I was taking from Imagos template contract for DPs. Here is the template: https://www.imago.org/images/pdfs/CINEMATOGRAPHERS/MODEL%20CONTRACT%20FOR%20AUTHORSHIP%20-%20version.22.01.08.pdf . In article 7.2, its speaks to Copyright Collective Socities. I understand the purpose of these copyright collectives, but after some searching, did not find any socities of note in America that cover motion picture professionals. Since this is from Imago, are these Socities more common in Europe than America? Does anyone have any more in
  4. Hey guys, I haven’t been on here for a while. I’m looking for some advice. Sorry if this is long winded…It’s been in my head for a while. I’m a Scottish DP based in Hong Kong and I’m thinking about relocating back to the UK & trying to get into production work. A bit about me : I have an undergrad in Film from 20 years ago and about 10+ years experience in the camera side of production…everything from AC to Gaffer to DP but mainly on small productions - loadsa of Short films, Indie Music Vids & tons of corporates. (I’ve shot corporates & Indie stuff in about 12 diff
  5. Hello everyone, I am a 3rd year film student studying Cinematography. The dream is to one day be a DOP for Film and Documentary, however, first I want to work my way up through the ranks of the camera department. I have undergone a number of weeks of work experience as a shadow camera trainee on 2 British TV shows. I was wondering if anyone has any advice on how to get work as a camera trainee in the UK? Or perhaps can offer me any work/work experience over summer as a trainee? Cheers! Josh Montoro
  6. Could it just be that Georgia has a 30% tax credit as opposed to MA's 25%? Lack of top tier talent? I ask because I've recently begun freelancing here and I aim to be a DP someday but I'm having trouble finding any major DP's in the state, commercial or film. They're just imported from NYC when needed. What needs to happen so that Boston can be a competitive city in the film and commercial world? I love this city and I'd rather not move!
  7. Please judge my work. I recently started getting into film making. To be precise about four months ago. I am a 12 and was 11 when I started. Link: https://youtu.be/18nrtGxGx6g
  8. Okay, guys and gals!! I have a few questions that hopefully the wealth of knowledge here can answer. First a disclaimer, (I actually like disclaimers for some weird reason): My goal is to lens commercials, films (short or long format), and the occasional music video. If given the opportunity, of course. I currently work for a production house that does very little in all those categories. So in the best interest of my personal goals I'd like to submit the following questions.: Is there a benefit to aligning oneself (as a cameraman/cinematographer/DP) to an ad agency? What are the chall
  9. Hey everyone! Hoping I can get some help here from the community. Obviously, my dream career is to be a cinematographer, for television, advertising you name it. I started my own production company out in Orange County, California and we fortunately have had some pretty nice success and have been in business the past 2 years. However it is not necessarily the route I want to go for. I don't necessarily want to be a business owner or business man, I would much rather be out in the field shooting as much as possible. I tend to travel to LA a lot to work on projects there but as of now I find mys
  10. Just recut my reel, this is a good reflection of what I did during 2014 with a few clips from some older projects. Let me know what you think. Thanks! https://vimeo.com/116426560
  11. I am in pre-production of a film at the moment that will require an 'aerial work platform' and a lighting rig to imitate moonlight above a wooded area. It's part of an ambitious project and none of the crew members have had any experience with this kind of set-up other than our University, Greenwich, is often a film set (twice a month) and we often see similar set-ups, for a beginner with this kind of project, what would you recommend? Extra info: filming in an area in the UK where no films have ever been made and its a bit of a novelty. Some rough terrain and at least 400ft to the n
