great director/cinematographer collaborations

Recommended Posts

I'm curious to know what everyone out there thinks are some of the greatest collaborations of Director and Cinematographer. I'm thinking of films that have the unique style of a particular director but that the cinematographer has also been able to leave their stamp as well. One that comes to mind for me is Close Encounters of the Third Kind. I think Spielberg's early style really comes out on that film and I'm sure that Zsigmond had a lot to do with it.

I'm hoping the answers here will help to add to my DVD/Blu-ray collection

Thanks in advance

Oliver Stone and Robert Richardson, Bertoluccci and Storaro, Bergman and Nykvist, Gordon Willis and whichever director he worked with more than once -- Pakula, Coppola, Bridges, Allen. Coens and Deakins. Lean and Young (sounds like the title of an exercise video or a gay porn movie...) Kubrick and Alcott. Lester and Watkin. Huston and Morris.

If we're going to count one-time only great collaborations, that opens the door quite a bit -- the most famous example would be Welles & Toland (also important would be Toland's multiple collaborations with Wyler and Ford).

Also, Malick and Almendros, Malick and Toll, Malick and Lubezki.

Another famous collaboration: Powell-Pressburger and Jack Cardiff (I think they did three movies together, all great: "Matter of Life & Death", "Black Narcissus", "Red Shoes").

Also Hitchcock and Burks.

Friedkin and Roizman. Martin Ritt and James Wong Howe. Spielberg and Daviau, Spielberg and Kaminski. Truffaut and Almendros. Kurosawa and Miyagawa. Satyajit Ray and Subrata Mitra. Eisenstein and Tisse. Murnau and Freund.

Alex Proyas and Dariusz Wolski worked twice to great results. Wolski also worked on the 3 Pirate movies with Verbinski and he is now working with Tim Burton on Alice in Wonderland after doing Sweent Todd. Another great team is Tom Tykwer and and Frank Griebe who have worked in several films together too.

Hi agree Drew, Harris Savides and Gus van Sant's work is quite impressive.

Also Hou Hsiao Hsien and Mark Lee Ping Bing

Sergei Urusevsky and Mikhail Kalatozov

I think any good cinematographer would have made an outstanding work with Kubrick, he was almost doing everything !

soderberg and himself.

Traffic is one of my favorite films - A couple of years ago I did a short doc on Hurricane Ivan and I watched that after every day of shooting. there was something about it that was very inspirational while I was making that film.

thanks a lot everyone. Of the pairings mentioned where there are multiple collaborations (Like Coens/Deakins), are there any that you think are particular stand-outs? I think the Big Lebowski is a good example of how the Coen's goofball style and Deakins' wide angle techniques go so well together. I really love the bowling montage at the beginning - I never thought bowling could look so beautiful.

"1900" is a gorgeous period movie by Storaro and Bertolucci, though not as good a movie as "The Conformist".

"Cries and Whispers" is a great work of collaboration between Nykvist and Bergman. Same goes for "Winter Light".

Also, check out Bergman's collaborations with Gunnar Fischer, like "Seventh Seal" or "Wild Strawberries".

Woody Allen's work with Gordon Willis on three b&w movies is worth studying: "Manhattan", "Stardust Memories" and to a lesser extent, "Broadway Danny Rose" (though in some ways, that one is the most entertaining.)

Allen Daviau and Spielberg,

Daviau is speaking at my school on monday!

If Im not mistaken, Empire of the Sun is their only collaboration other than the work they did together in film school. I agree, though - it is truly great work. I saw that film several times in the theatre when I was 17. I have not seen it since. My hope is that it will come out on Blu-ray soon. CE3K looks absolutely amazing on BRD.
