Alexander Boyd
Hi y'all, I shot 95% of a project on a 235 in 3perf S35. For the last 5%, really just pick-ups, we're using an Arri 2C camera set up in 4perf S35. What would be the best way to frame for the smaller 3perf S35 image while shooting on 4perf S35? I don't think a 3perf GG for the 2C exists? Is there an GG or aspect ratio close enough that could be used to guesstimate the 3perf f35 frame? Thanks in advance for sharing your thoughts! Robin Phillips
you basically need a ground glass that matches as close as possible to whatever ground glass you used in the 235. you should be able to find the latest version of the arri format guide in pdf form online. you might need to ask the rental house if they know which ground glass they gave you, though the format guide indicates what perforation cameras said ground glasses were ok for. as for a pickups ground glass, to be super precise you might want a penciled glass if Andree at AM camera can do it for you. but it just depends on how close you want to try to match it. also you probably want to verify the 2C actually has a super 35 gate and not just a normal one

The more accurate and closer to the 3perf S35 1.78 GG that we used on the 235 the better of course. But I don’t think such a GG exists for 2C cameras? And yes, the 2C we‘re using is S35. Robin Phillips
I think Andree might be able to get it close penciled in. If Shruco cans till make you a custom one he could probably nail it, but even a few years ago it would take months to get something from him. Yeah I doubt that that'd be a realistic solution, both in terms of time and money.
Premium Member Tyler Purcell Posted November 8 Premium Member Share Posted November 8 Well 3 perf is S35, so if the 2C is also S35, then a standard 1.85:1 would be fine. The frame lines of 3 perf are 1.78:1, but nobody uses the frame edge, you'll always crop a tiny bit to 1.85:1 anyway.
Premium Member Dom Jaeger Posted November 8 Premium Member Share Posted November 8 It doesn’t really matter if you shot 3 perf or 4 perf or S35, all you want to do is match the aspect ratio you framed for earlier, which is 1.78. So you just need a 1.78 ground glass for the 2C, or have a rental house technician pencil in a 1.78 frame line. It’s very similar to a 1.85 frame line, which is more likely to be found in a 2C ground glass, so you could just use that with the awareness that the 1.78 frame is a smidge taller or a smidge less wide, depending on how you crop the image in post.
