Benjamin Lamb
Wondering if someone can explain to me how this lighting effect is achieved and what it's called: It's kind of like an oval of light around the subject....with dark edges. I've seen it a few other places. Thanks.
Premium Member Adrian Sierkowski Posted June 2, 2015 Premium Member Share Posted June 2, 2015 It's a vignette Generally caused by a lens-- though can also be put in in post. In this case it's caused by the extreme wide angle lens used.
Stuart Brereton
The background is most likely lit separately from the artist, and they are using the natural shape of the beam to create the shape, perhaps also using flags and cutters to help. The look is then augmented in post by crushing the blacks and mid range tones.
Robin R Probyn
Don't think thats the lens.. I,d be wanting my money back on that one if it was..! on the wider stage shot you can see vignetting all round.. Im sure that back wall was light roughly with that "shape" but all the rest is done in post.. much faster and more control than on set..
Benjamin Lamb
Thanks guys. I figured much of that was accomplished in post. Is that a pretty simple effect to pull off?
