Microbudget High-Key Comedy/Family feature suggestions
JD Hartman replied to Jay Young's topic in Lighting for Film & Video
When is the last time you saw a Blanket-Lite or rented for one for a shoot? I know of two rental house in the NYC metro area that have one. They each have exactly one and they were located after spending about a half day on the phone. In the Lexington, Ky. area....even less likely. -
Google search, try: search target site:www.cinematography.com

Shooting on a Fishing Boat
JD Hartman replied to Nickoloz Kachibaia's topic in Camera Operating & Gear
I'd look for BTS or extra footage from Deadliest Catch (Discovery channel) to see what sort of protective housings they use.. You might get lucky, but their cameras are usually trash by the end of the season. -
what's the purpose of a SpectoLux mirror attachment
JD Hartman replied to Shachar Alfie's topic in Lighting for Film & Video
DN Labs?, no header cable or ballast visible.... You think this is a 1200w HM because..... the seller says so? Could it be a Metal Halide or Mercury Vapor? -

Does holding back information help? Can an ETC Source4 be used as an architectural lighting fixture? -

Better image of the label perhaps? Maybe an image looking into the housing? Could this be an architectural lighting fixture? -
What about a simple jack in the handgrip and a cord connected to a cordless power tool battery?

Tungsten to Fluorescent gel
JD Hartman replied to Petter Englund's topic in Lighting for Film & Video
Are you using the Flo(s) with the Blondes to light an interior? This seems too obvious of an answer, swap the daylight tubes for Tungsten and use 1/8 or 1/4 minus green as needed by eye. -
3D printer for camera accessories
JD Hartman replied to Kyriacos Mosfiliotis's topic in Accessories (Deprecated SubForum)
In the mean time: https://boingboing.net/2017/01/29/3d-printer-fumes-suspected-in.html Sad that two pets died, but the two human were very deserving recipients of the Darwin award. In other news stories, it was reported that the same couple were also running an unvented gasoline generator in their apartment. -
3D printer for camera accessories
JD Hartman replied to Kyriacos Mosfiliotis's topic in Accessories (Deprecated SubForum)
In addition, they aren't anything like the "replicator" on Star Trek (or any of it's variants), you don't utter "cheese plate" and one appears in a puff of smoke and the process is painfully slow. The cheap 3D printers are also known to catch fire. -
You'd think the replicants/androids/whatever would have some sort of a trademark coded into their DNA or cells or something. The same way I.C. chip makers trademark their silicon wafers on a microscopic level or the same way the snake scale was marked with a license # number in the movie.

3D printer for camera accessories
JD Hartman replied to Kyriacos Mosfiliotis's topic in Accessories (Deprecated SubForum)
Do you know how to use CAD/CAM software to create 3D objects? From what I've read, that's what drives the software that produces the files which directs the 3D printer. -

You don't need a 2K LED Fresnel, a conventional 2K Fresnel will work fine all day on a 20A residential circuit. You will find such a circuit unless you are working in an old house with a 60A service. You won't burn the house down with a 2K unless you are a complete moron.

the flaps catch on fire in under an hour? Did you mean the barndoors? The metal (usually aluminum) barndoors caught fire, that must have been a sight! An ultra low budget shoot isn't going to have the funds to buy an Astra, Celebrity, Litepanels or Kino knockoff either. You're not making any sense. Time to put you on ignore.

Beadboard - names and confusion
JD Hartman replied to Will J. Lokken's topic in Lighting for Film & Video
Extruded Polystyrene is Depron. http://www.depronfoam.co.uk/html/what_is_depron.html Expanded Poly and beadboard are the same. White one side, usually foil covered on the other, various thicknesses. It's a type of insulating sheathing. Foamcore Sorry. crap-o-pedia link: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Foamcore -
How many times have you personally witnessed scorched and bubbled paint, discolored or singed draperies because of improperly placed Tungsten lights? The question may have been posed by a student, but it wasn't worded as, "What's best or safer on a student shoot? Student shoots and cheap lights??? Last NYC undergrad shoot I was on, All lighting supplied by the school was ARRI, at Columbia, it was all Mole.
-
Mole ran a training class some time back. It may have been discussed here. Do you have a written certification as a lamp operator? Issued by?
-
Dangerous? Really. LED lights produce heat as well.
-
True.

All the negative comments aside, I appreciate the work that went in the models and miniatures. They didn't just fall back on making everything in the background CGI.

NYC G&E rental question The LED Fresnel challenge!
JD Hartman replied to Michael LaVoie's topic in Lighting for Film & Video
No! 4Wall absorbed Shadowstone and several others. Been to both (Shadowstone and 4Wall), they have it all. Xeno: worn out equipment in terrible repair, certain to bite you in the ass. Handheld, small time, nothing you can't get elsewhere. Eastern.....can't comment. Lighthouse, yes, but they will subrent what you want from 4Wall. So w why bother? Maybe look into 3Phase Rental in Clifton. -

Can't make a personal testimonial on LED Fresnels. But pick one or more that you'd like to test out and call 4Wall, they'll likely have them (all).
