1. Nope. That's not right. You wouldn't need to compensate when shooting with a 180 degree shutter. Then the exposure time would be 1/n seconds where n is your fps. But the non reflex Bolexes don't have a 180° shutter! What serial no. is your camera? Early cameras before 1004xx have a 192° shutter giving you 1/45 at 24fps and later cameras have a 144° shutter giving you 1/60. If you are shooting neg it's not that critical since you have room for error, but for shooting reversal it would be. And IMO it's better to be precise about things and then experiment from there rather than make guesses! Regards, Dave PS: Get these books! They'll answer almost every Bolex question there is and you'd be supporting a really nice and honest guy!
2. Hi Roy, what kind of Bolex do you have? On a reflex one you'd have to set your meter to 1/80th of a second to compensate for the reflex prism. So set your meter to 1/80th and 64 ISO and you 'll be fine. As your film is negative material err on the side of overexposure! And change your name to first and last name as per forum rules. Happy shooting! ;) Cheers, Dave
3. Happy birthday and all the best! Cheers, Dave
4. There's always the other option. Get up at 4:45 a.m., haul your Bolex and tripod to the spot. Then wind the beast, make sure you're in I mode (I only noticed after quarter of an hour!). And then press the cable release every 15 seconds for over two hours! :D Worked like a charm. Without a capping shutter or an intervalometer. But I guess the next time I'll use a Tobin too! Cheers, Dave PS: I hope you can see the result of that adventure soon! Need to cut it...
5. You want to mount C mount Switars to your PL mount ACL? Nope, that won't work I guess. The FFD for C mount is 17,52mm and for PL it's 54mm. The mount would have to have a really deep recess and you'd probably hit the mirror too! Cheers, Dave PS: That's one of the things cool about the NPR. You get a C mount and a PL mount if you want to.
6. It seems you're looking for a front silvered mirror. I know a guy around here who could make you one. Thus I'm pretty sure they do exist. But for rental, hm... They'd be pretty expensive to rent I guess, as they're very easily scratched! Cheers, Dave
7. I wasn't saying that one should. And I'm quite aware of that, especially Rockwell is under heavy fire for that kind of nonsense. But the pictures aren't that subjective and it was the only thing I could share on the matter, example-wise. As far as construction quality goes, hm, I was shown early examples of these lenses by photographer a couple years back. Could it have been a 50 and an 85? Like the first two lenses available? These two didn't feel too good to me. I didn't have the time to test them against any other lenses though. And I wasn't saying that they are not good. I was merely implying my doubt that they were THAT good to justify a far higher price! Cheers, Dave
8. Hi Elliot, IIRC there is a RX version of the Cinegon as well. Try ebay! Cheers, Dave
9. I don't think that they're that good, all of them. The housings have a very plasticy feel to them and from what I have seen the optics are not spectacular either. No wonder since they're made by Cosina and not by Zeiss themselves (Cosina has been building cheap third-party lenses for many mounts for ages!). I think you're paying for the name and the lens designs but for that price the workmanship and built quality are really lacking! One may like the look of the ZFs or not but quality-wise they're not THAT much better than Nikkors (maybe Canon or Minolta lenses too, don't know about these). I'd guess you'd be hard pressed to find them superior to the best prime Nikkors out there. Check this out: Ken Rockwell's 50mmlens comparison. Take what you read with a grain (or a spoon) of salt, but look at the pictures. You get the idea... Cheers, Dave
10. I suggest heading to a libary and checking out some books on the topic. Else do a search of the boards and find the question answered already. Regards, Dave PS: And don't do stuff at the latest possible moment! ;) Not a good attitude in the film business...
11. Hi Chris, there's a loader too. So I guess that just the clapping goes off to the AD dep. Cheers, Dave
12. Hi Tom, I use an Arrilite 800 in my VideoPro S. I'm really happy with it. I figured it gives you more light per watt than a fresnel does and it stays with the Chimera all the time too. So I thought to use a fresnel was kinda wasting money as you couldn't really use it's advantages as it's in there. If you rarely use the Chimera though, maybe a fresnel would be a a smarter choice after all (if you like fresnels to begin with)... Cheers, Dave
13. Hi Evan, what did the image looks like in the finder? And does it look the same with different focal lengths? What about the FFD of the camera? Was it recently measured? Remember that wide lenses have a really shallow depth of focus (the range where a reasonable sharp image is formed behind the lens, ideally the film should sit in the focal point). So a longer lens might have yielded a sharper image if the FFD is off! Cheers, Dave
14. Hi Alexandros, a very simple reason: Kodak can get me 7219 2R on 400ft daylight spools in long pitch. They are currently sitting in the US and I can get them in about 2 weeks. The only ones in short pitch they have are in Japan and I'd have to wait much longer! Regards, Dave
15. Thanks Alexxandros! I'll try the guys if all else fails. how much did you pay? Another thing: is there any problem in the lab when using long pitch film? I guess there shouldn't be as you can telecine prints too and I suspect that negative lab stocks (IN stock and the like) are long pitch as well and are developed in the same bath as camera neg, right? But it's better to be sure than to be sorry! Cheers, Dave
16. Hi Janne, have a look here: LOCAM II manual. I'm currently looking for a Deutsch connector to suit the camera, if I fail I'll just swap the plug as you guys did. Any idea whether a non-reflex LOCAM could somehow be converted to a reflex one? How much is different? I guess too much to make it feasible. But here is my idea how to bypass that. You take a cheap Angie (or what ever) Zoom in C-mount. Frame the picture, tighten down the head/camera mount, take the lens off and mount your taking lens and focus by measurement as you would do anyways. Did any of you guys ever try running it from a 24V DC power supply? Cheers, Dave
17.
They are quite affordable, i mean the fees and other things. But i dont know about thier credebility. Have any heard about these schools? I am interested in Masters at Hamburg Media school, but i dont know how good they are.
Hm, seems pretty good to me as well. But, Malik, do you speak German? You'd have as per their requirements. I guess that would be the case in most, if not all, German courses. Same goes for Austria... Cheers, Dave
18. Second that. Although I have never worked with a Rifa that's what I do when gelling my Chimera. Cheers, Dave
19. Hi Chris, subtitle it. The message is way too important to get across to the 10% who won't have a hard time to understand. The guy is a little easier to understand than the lady is. But still hard. I'll be facing a similar problem soon, but in this case it's an Austrian speaking German who won't be understood by 90% of the other Austrians speaking German too. And that's only 350km from Vienna! Over there in the Alps every valley used to have their unique and distinctively different dialect! Cheers, Dave
20. No item found under that link or item number! Cheers, Dave
21. I know it's a hassle, but try a small monitor attached to the top of the cam. Or the camera LCD and have the operator look through the finder. But you won't see much on that one either. But I'm not sure if this works with the Z1. It used to work on the PD150 when you turned the display around and clicked it back the holder, then both finder and LCD would work. Cheers, Dave
22. Hi Ryan, I just remembered a story from a commercial a couple of years ago here. Iwasn't on the show but was told the story by a crew member. To match newly shot footage to old spcae footage they had, I believe it was video (probably transferred from 16mm?) from the late Apollo missions or something 80s they recorded it out on Digibeta and dubbed it to VHS and redubbed it 6 times and then took the footage back into their NLE! :D Cheers, Dave
23. Yes it does. The original version of NTSC especially. It was the Yanks who invented the term Never The Same Color! ;) Hi Ryan, why not rent an NTSC camera, shoot some charts and test and try and emulate the whole thing with your HD source material? Or just shoot NTSC and blow it up to HD, which would really make for an awful image! Cheers, Dave
24. That looks like a light leak to me. What kind of camera are you using? S8? Cheers, Dave
25. Hi Leo, good catch! Finding fault in the lens maker's own history! :D Thanks for the nice info though... Cheers, Dave
