  1. Hi Paul, being not related to Lee's project at all, I have to say that that is quite generous offer. I only wish your example would spread! Kudos, Dave
  2. Called Social Market Economy here. Works quite well, not perfect either but way better than having to sacrifice your savings when you're hospitalized! Cheers, Dave
  3. Hm, maybe to do with a failure in the mike? But couldn't you just monitor that signal? Strange indeed. Cheers, Dave
  4. I was just reinforcing what you said. I have no first hand experience with the school either. There's some great people who came out of their programme and there's lots of no-so-good ones. Same as everywhere. All the other stuff I could say is based on what I have been told by students. Sadly, there is a general problem with that kind of education here in Austria whereas the colleges and universities are really good in other fields. Cheers, Dave
  5. I think it's very dangerous to judge a school that way. Cheers, Dave
  6. I bet that actually is 25.4mm/1in! Does it have a thread? If so, it might well be a C mount... Cheers, Dave
  7. Happy bday! All the best! Alles Gute zum Geburtstag! Cheers, Dave
  8. And, most importantly, a set of eyes and a brain! David
  9. Hi Ashley, there was a light meter you could just slide into the accessory holder on the Bolex. But other than that you don't have to take the camera model into account when deciding on a light meter. I use a Minolta Flash Meter VI, but they are no longer sold by Minolta but Kenco. I like it a lot. But that's just my personal preference. I'd recommend looking at a couple meters of friends/colleagues and see which one suits you best. Most of the people I know use either Minoltas or Sekonics. And you also need to decide what type of meter you want. Mine is a combined spot and incident meter, which covers most application, IMO. Also do a search of the boards, you'll find plenty there! Cheers, Dave
  10. Wow! That's nice. Can't wait to see a sample clip! Cheers, Dave PS: Good to know that Poland isn't all that far from Vienna!
  11. Hi Adrian, did you know that they are selling HD make-up? Cheers, Dave
  12. Please do try to get permission. It will save you a whole lot of trouble! Even if you just shoot with a battery powered light. You could also have a car with an inverter to power a small normal light (i.e. 300W shouldn't be much of a problem with a good inverter!) Cheers, Dave
  13. Sorry, Annie, you ain't qualified! You have handled cameras way too much for that type of ad shoot! :D It's says "Mustn't have handled PRO camera gear before, ever!" in the job description. Cheers, Dave PS: If you still bleach your hair be sure to post a photo with you current fav camera! ;)
  14. Hm. My tech is Paul Dresel, who must now be way over 70. He started as a film camera tech apprentice with German TV in 1951! (It's funny, that he told me that people would advise him against that back then. They said video was around the corner and would kill film quickly!) He has a huge collection of stuff at his place. It might be quite likely that he indeed has prototype camera, but what ever means he got it. I would be hard pressed if I got that fact wrong. It was a couple of years ago that I saw it, but was very impressed by the 2-digit serial. But if all goes well I'll be there again in the next couple of weeks. I can ask him, if you like and bring pictures, if possible! Hm. Does Arri have some kind of internal museum? Have you contacted them at all, yet? I mean, the ideal person to do this would be a former Arri employee who loves camera and is in retirement. Cheers, Dave
  15. My guess: it's a DS8 camera. Quartz 2x8S-1M. S8 wiki entry. Cheers, Dave
  16. "we're not calling him RED!" Cheers, Dave
  17. Hm, what about using a 500 USD Bolex H16 Rex-5 and a couple of the more recent Switar lenses? Sure that ain't a 416 with Zeiss glass, but it still is very far superior to S8 in resolution. And why should reversal stocks lack resolution compared to 16mm neg? Sure older lenses will degrade your image but since the film area is much larger it will still be better than S8! Unless we're walking about comparing old stocks in 16mm to modern stocks in S8! Cheers, Dave
  18. Hm, hard to tell what you saw. do you have a sample clip? Cheers, Dave
  19. Actually, most Super8 cameras have way more bells and whistles than 16mm cameras, maybe aside from the latest Aaton and Arri cams. IMO S8 is great for a suitable story, but since it's not much cheaper than 16mm nowadays I wouldn't use it for much else, unless I want that look for some reason. And I also think that it's better to learn the basics of film using stills 35mm film for exposure and the like and 16mm for the loading, film handling etc aspects. but that's just my 2 cents of course. Cheers, Dave
  20. You mean a pan? And did you see jumping as if the field order was reversed? Because it's in the nature of 25p that quicker pans don't look as smooth as in 50i (logically so!). Cheers, Dave
  21. Funny thing is I hadn't even seen the video before I posted my blond girl comment. And for dough you dish out for the grip and iphone you can get a cheap hd camera easily. Hell, you can even get one for the price of the grip alone! Strange days, these! Cheers, Dave
  22. Second that. And advertise it with a couple of (usually blond) chicks who like they've never held a camera before! Cheers, Dave
  23. He didn't mean the film. ;) Bruce Almighty is Bruce McNaughton, the guy who did the conversion on this baby! Cheers, Dave
  24. Hi John, My camera tech (the one who still has my NPR for S16 conversion...argh... I need to get on with that) has a Model I, I think serial 37! Must have been made in 37 or 38 I guess. It's by far the oldest one I have seen yet. The other Model one was somewhere in the 300s IIRC. Hehe, remember three phase power in Austria? Well, it seems you have another reason to move to Vienna for retirement. The Third Man is screened here almost daily! I think it is the Burgkino that runs it. Cheers, Dave PS: What about asking Arri directly for the serials? If need be I could help with any German you might need.
  25. Hi Scott, I suspect it's either a filter applied at export or a problem with RGB and 601 color space. Check for these two things first! Cheers, Dave
