  1. That is one of the reasons why I think that it is great in this forum everyone has to use their real name. I hope that Roger reconsiders.....let's wait and see. Finger crossed!
  2. I personally believe that Conrad Hall is the best at that. And he does it in films that relate to human life on this planet. Not sci fi's etc...
  3. Hey Steve, That photo is bathed in very soft, overcast light. That type of light will not achieve what you are after. The effect that you are after means that you'll need a hard hitting source. Once you've set it up then play with the tilting of the blinds. David Mullen achieved some great results on one of his films by using a 4k xenon. Also look at the topic in new posts under the heading of "Ugly Shadows".
  4. I've developed 16 and 35 at ilab. They both came out great.
  5. I don't mean to be facetious but why not shoot with something gritty, like s16mm?
  6. Hi Salil, Just because your actor is standing in a corner doesn't mean you'll get double shadows. I don't know anything about your story/look etc....but from being so close to the walls the key light could act as fill at the same time.
  7. I downloaded the series.....it's interesting that, even though they cropped it 1.33, they still shot it on 35. To all UK'ers....imagine that here!!!
  8. You could well be right about the wire being on s16mm....I did however see a behind the scenes photo somewhere and it had a 435 in there. Additionally, I'm under the impression that most dramas from HBO are shot 2-3perf 35mm.....or at least until about a year ago.
  9. Don't mean to rain on your parade but I went today and I found it boringl! Apart from one thing, there was nothing that was new and exciting. Roll on the BSC.
  10. It's a regular problem. Nothing beats VLC. On the topic, I absolutely LOVED the wire. I watched all the series in record time.....I can't really think of a tv drama to better this. Such a shame that in the UK we don't have a channel that will take the risks that HBO takes in the US.....and shoot 2perf 35mm! ;)
  11. Hey Ben, I recently shot a film where I used for reference the lighting style of Vera Drake as follows: As you can see this doesn't apply David's topper system, which I think adds great dimension to the shot, but relies on the contrast and dimension to come from the set design. It also screams of britain in the winter, when the sun is at a lower angle and it is 99.9% overcast.
  12. Hey Freya, I'm based in London so if i can be of any help then please don't hesitate..... :)
  13. the BSC show is on the 13th and 14th of March. BTW I'm going tomorrow to the broadcast if anyone is going...
  14. Hey Freya, At ilab, speak to Nigel. Really nice guy and always willing to give any technical advice that he can. Where are you shooting and when?
  15. Hey John, Sorry to hear about your misfortune. I wish you a speedy and healthy recovery! ;)
  16. Sorry Paul, I was going to move on but that line has left an unpleasant image in my mind.
  17. As good as your work is, I have to say that all that content on a continuous reel makes it feel like its too long. However, I think that you should look at presenting your work on your website differently. Instead of having one viewer with all your work, how about having individual window viewers for different jobs....a bit like you did in one of your posts above. Like that you can show all of your work without having to compromise and you give the viewer the option to pick and choose what they want to watch, plus it makes you look a bit busier.
  18. I think that problem can only be as big as you make it. Somewhere in the back of his mind he must constantly think "Phew!! Got away with another one!!"
  19. My experience with some s/e that I had stored in the fridge for 3 years was positive. The film held out perfectly. I did over exp by 2/3. I would definitely do a clip test.
  20. I really like stop motion photography. Have a look at this http://patrykrebisz.com/stills/FINAL_movie.html Good work btw!
  21. I once read a interview of R Deakins and in it he said, that if ever what he produced was exactly how he saw it with the eye in his mind, he would give up. It's very unlikely that you'll ever find a dp that isn't critical of his/her work. If you'd like to get a peer critique then you could post it on this forum.
  22. Still not sure if I can make the show this coming week.....but in regards to BSC show, work permitting I will definitely go to that. I tend to go on the saturday. Would be great to meet some of you guys face to face.
