  1. so don't try to compare it with other pro video cameras, thats it. Regards Chan Chi Ying DP HK Just to be clear, & this is not just directed at you, but know one is trying to do that or say that. I have heard that before way to many times, its annoying!
  2. Here it is everyone the first short film from the 5D Mark II pre-production model that Vincent Laforet was able to test out. Link to his blog http://blog.vincentlaforet.com/ & to canon site http://www.usa.canon.com/dlc/controller?ac...;articleID=2086 . Enjoy!
  3. Nope only 30fps read this post, http://prolost.blogspot.com/2008/09/dear-c...24p-please.html to see what some are trying to do to change that, although it is highly unlikely canon will change anything.
  4. I have seen that also. I emailed one of the people that I saw on there that I knew, here is there reply, "I don't feel like I have had any luck from there as of yet- but a lot of times the companies looking for crew- look may different places at once- so its always worth it to thumb the extra 100 bucks and be seen more places." Maybe it will be an "eye catcher" I think that was a pretty good answer.
  5. I have to agree with this. I just finished watching this movie again for my 5th or 6th time and it is great. It is about as perfect as it gets in my book. Robert Elswit did an amazing job here. His Cinematography serves the story perfectly!! Great Movie!
  6. I agree with Brad, when I was done watching it I was thinking it would make a great BBC series!! Funny Stuff.
  7. Get a hard tape measure from a hardware store. I like the Stanley Fat Max 35'. That should solve the tape measure problem. When ever I 2nd after they cut I simply say footage, and either the Cam op, or the 1stAC give me the footage. That should not be a problem for them. As for laying down marks yes I do believe that a 2nd should be come somewhat intuitive about this, don't be jumpy to do this. I would talk to your 1stAC about this if your not sure when you should. When I 1st for example I use reference points for focus, and only lay down marks if the Actors need it or if there are so many actors I need it. Also know what lens is on the camera, that will help. Listen to whats going on, that will help. As for the slate I cant think of anything for that one right now, but I'm sure there was a reason. Last bit of advice is you should be talking to who ever your 1stAC is, this could have all been done and solved while on set.
  8. Walter, I didn't take it personally. I just don't think you understand why I posted it. I agree with you 100% on what you wrote. Normally I wouldn't assume, but in this case I will make an exception & assume that your post particularly the end was directed at the large and not myself, since what you wrote is something that I already know, have known & agree with. I will leave it at that.
  9. Wow Walter! I think you took this way, way to seriously. I merely posted this to show something knew & the merging of ideas. First time I have seen a DSLR that can shoot video, be honest with yourself, its cool what they did. It's a great travel camera for the amateur photographer. No one suggested the idea of shooting a motion picture with it, I wouldn't dream of doing that. If your referring to the Rockwell article, you take yourself then and everything you read to seriously. No one is searching for your so called Nirvana in picture making looking high & low, where this comes from I have no idea. A camera is merely another tool, used to get the job done. Your right it's not about the Camera, I completely agree & I hope every one else on here does as well. But to say its one of the least memorable times in the history of film making, is foolish. Think about it, you have more choices today than before. More choices mean different looks and styles. I view the camera as an extension of the story, choose your format & now in this time your camera, in accordance to the story to achieve what you want.
  10. Funny running into you on here, The stills look great man! You should have hit me up I would have come helped you out, probably would have been more fun than the show I was working on.
  11. That's what I was thinking. I shoot Canon for still stuff, mostly because of their lenses, I prefer Canon glass over Nikon. Although I'm considering switching over to the Nikon, the D700 is very tempting. Unless Canon updates its 5D, I'm going Nikon.
  12. Nikon just announced the all new D90. Why am I posting this? It's capable of shooting at 1280x720p/24fps & I found this funny, here is a bit from the Ken Rockwell website. "If I were Nikon, I'd shoot any TV commercials advertising the D90 on the D90. Hand this to someone in the ASC and he'll get great results." Click the link for more info. http://kenrockwell.com/nikon/d90.htm
  13. I pulled that AC issue out of the collection & looked at it again. I didn't see anything mentioned about that scene in there.
  14. Hello All, I was wondering if any one could explain to me how the Scene in Casino Royale when Daniel Craig, 007, gets poisoned by the martini & rushes off to the bathroom was done. More specifically just the scene in the bathroom. Did the change the shutter angle & if so to what degree, or did the change frame rates, or was it a combination of the two? I really liked the camera movement in that scene & I think that added a great deal to it, but what else was done?
  15. Great info, & from those frames I like the look! I would really enjoy seeing the final product.
  16. A lot of that contrast you speak of is do to the great job they did with locations & what the PD did as well as wardrobe.
  17. It all depends, there are many variables. We don't know what your camera angle will be, what kind of scene it is, is it interior or exterior, day or night? Just lighting a face is more of a still photography thing. For Cinematography we want to light thee entire scene. You should incorporate your actors lighting accordingly.
  18. I some what agree with you about Crewdson's work, when I look at his pictures I notice the lighting right away, and I'm hard pressed to see what the image is actually trying to say. As for the strobist, you have to remember most of them are hobbyist whether they like to admit it or not. There are full time pro's that use the technique & understand how it can add to an image and how to control it but for the most part the stuff you see is mostly from hobbyist not pros & there stuff why they think it is great, it is often just ok.
  19. This thread has been going for sometime now but for some reason just came across it. Here is my flickr page. Enjoy!! http://www.flickr.com/photos/christopherarata/
  20. I agree Mike, I also Like Paul Cameron ASC, he has been a favorite of mine for a long time.
  21. Alex, I just wanted to say that was a great video post. I really enjoy watching little snip-it's of things like that.
  22. I like Daniel Pearl ASC, for his commercial work. He does some great 120FPS work.
  23. Dan, you probably right but here is a link to how much the shell I'm looking at runs, http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/2587...Shell_Only.html If anything it will make for a fun project. I still think I can build it for cheaper than Kino's, All I want from them is the shell everything else I can fab my self.
  24. I have not done this yet but I will. Some might find it silly but the point is I rather pay $200 or around that for a kick ass light rather than well a lot more & I do like the Kino Flo shell. Mind you this is for personal use; if I'm shooting production is paying so then Kino's all the way, I actually really do like them, a lot! The Plan: I will get the AHSUPPLY kit, probably the 4 55watt, then I will just buy the Kino Flo shell, for those that don't think you can do that YOU CAN. From there mount it all inside and probably mount the ballast on the back, now I'm sure there will be more that comes into play but it should work some where along those lines. When it happens I will let you know. If someone happens to follow those plans before I do please share.
  25. I personally have not...I only have had friends / people I work with order from there. I to recently have been thinking about ordering from them, as I said I have seen some decent stuff turn out and it is the most practically priced stuff I have seen plus no hunting down equipment from places. I would like to build some kits for my still photography, as I hate strobes. -Christopher Arata
