Question...on the use over 'Oversampling'?
Chris Millar replied to Omar Alboukharey's topic in General Discussion
hrrrm, looks like there is more to it but yeah, you'd have to have about 2 years worth at least of solid university level math and digital signal processing to - I dunno, maybe read that and actually understand it, or start to understand it... -
Question...on the use over 'Oversampling'?
Chris Millar replied to Omar Alboukharey's topic in General Discussion
yeah, it's not the clearest terminology - at least to me... I read on wikipedia also that upsampling 'increases the sample rate', but the way I figure it the signal was sampled already, you are really just interpolating the data and playing it back as if it were sampled at a higher rate (or not, in the case of slowmo, stretched imagery etc...) Oversampling I would hesitate to call 'opposite' of either up or down sampling - it's more of an idea or concept as opposed to a process or algorithm that could be implemented more directly in code as up and down sampling can. If you take a photo at a resolution much higher than you'll ever need you're effectively oversampling, why would you do it? all the reasons you've outlined yourself ... Why wouldn't you? extra storage and processing issues etc... But the process of making your data adhere to a common standard among other sets of data, be it a frame rate, pixel dimensions and/or bit depth may well require up or (hopefully) downsampling. In the case of oversampled data it will require downsampling as that defined the data to be oversampled in the first place. As you can imagine, oversampling can happen by accident and justified in hindsight if you really want  I wouldn't think too much on it ... or maybe a better way to think about it is that you can trust other people will have differing interpretations, quite a few of them inconsistent with others, and quite a few inconsistent with themselves  -
Lighting a beach scene at night with no generator
Chris Millar replied to Vadim Joy's topic in Lighting for Film & Video
LED lights are DC ... (?) And I mean, getting 24v 'truck' batteries fullstop, as opposed to using your trucks battery - and inverters - that is, if you need AC -

Could be cost prohibitive in purchasing the amount you'll need but car/truck batteries and an inverter (of the appropriate wattage) ... or go DC... -
Difference Between F-Stop and T-Stop
Chris Millar replied to Vadim Joy's topic in Lenses & Lens Accessories
Heya Gregg, Have a search for the other dozen or so t-stop vs f-stop threads already populating the forum... They tend to follow a pattern: Post 1: The question Post 2: The answer (that you gave and for all intents and purposes, at least to the OP, is a perfectly adequate answer) Post 3: The correction re. aperture vs. entrance pupil Post 4: Same correction by another poster within 5mins of Post 3 (written before post 3 was visible) The threads usually diverge from here but will very likely include some 'what he said' responses, a retraction by poster # 2 after they googled 'f-stop entrance pupil' then discussion regarding all the other threads and how the info is freely available on wikipedia. -
Difference Between F-Stop and T-Stop
Chris Millar replied to Vadim Joy's topic in Lenses & Lens Accessories
Let's see if I can beat Dom, Adrian, Jean-Louis, et al to this :D F-Stop is the ratio between the focal length and the diameter of the entrance pupil . T-Stops are adjusted for light transmission efficiency, and this will always be a higher number. Some confusion may result from the fact that an entrance pupil is in other words an 'effective' aperture - which sounds 't-stoppy'. Hope I didn't just add to the misinformation ;) -

Yip, can vouch for egg trays, they are the classic home studio solution. In lieu of white noise genration and spectral analysis, I think the general tactic is to be as random as possible with your 'traps' as the pitch of the shapes you're introducing roughly scale with wavelengths of the noise they cancel (perhaps by a factor of 2 or 1/2 I can't recall).

Bolex Not Running, YES it has been Wound

Take out the pressure plate then operate (but not force) the rewind crank (in '0') while observing the rollers and claw mechanism inside, you might be able to spot something ... -
Powering PV(solar) panel with LED lights

Care to explain this system, so we're all on the same page? -
Powering PV(solar) panel with LED lights
Chris Millar replied to haoshan's topic in Lighting for Film & Video
I agree, however that when using solar panels with the SUN - as intended - "is bit expensive but in long run you will be able to save good amount of money.." (which will, within a reasonable amount of time pay off your initial outlay) :) -
Powering PV(solar) panel with LED lights
Chris Millar replied to haoshan's topic in Lighting for Film & Video
Saving money if there is some kind of subsidy as Phil points out. Saving 'energy' - no - not unless you want to start a discussion along the lines of money equating to energy that is... but even in that case, you're just dicking a (broken) subsidy system, a deficit will turn up somewhere and it's just as easy to imagine it coming from your grandmothers healthcare as it is anything else... Seems like there's nothing much between stupidity and greed. -

Gidday Dom, Thanks muchly ! it's interesting so far in that there have been zero empty or crappy answers - all interesting and thoughtful stuff. I guess it does touch on some common frustrations that people have time to mull over ... and then in turn want to be heard. aaaand if I'm advertising it on forums and facebook etc. I guess I'm shooting ducks in a barrel (and it reeks of response bias - but hey ...)

a survey! I'm a student (robotics/mechatronics ME) and every now and again I have to drag myself through what I consider completely off-topic topics... At the moment it's user interfaces and although I'd rather be building some Maya hack, Flair, Flame/Nuke camera interface the target is a simple website. We are obliged to garner outside opinion on some aspects ... it'll take about 4mins and you get to have a rant about UI if you like ^_^ https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/MR7R3RG Any help appreciated (and apologies for degrading this forum with yet another one of these  )

Back to them, with the vimeo link - kindly ask them to join in the discussion. Or ... much less fuss - be happy, the weave is so minimal that any post correction (if required) will leave next to zero artefacts.

RARE New Back Issues of American Cinematographer
Chris Millar replied to Sue Alan's topic in Cine Marketplace
Ja, I've bought quite a few back issues that way ... -
Half day in my primary (sometimes film related) industry also ... But that is due to the fact that most domestic travel round this neck of the woods takes about half a day ;) Any longer and I invoice a full day - think about it, you're not free to do what you choose - also it's common to get a travel allowance on top of the per diems. aaaand finally, I'll mention that on more than one occasion the taxi fare from airport to hotel has been more than then cost of the flight so don't forget to collect receipts for these expenses that can sometimes fall on you to manage. I simply send it all by email to a mid-level (often the only) accounts person with nothing much more than a smiley face for the body of the text. Theory is that it's more hassle for them to send it up to producer level than to simply pay it - no idea of the reality though ! ;)

But I bet you made your money on your EX1 ? With mine I pulled the 'warm body attached' gig ($0) but got myself exposure to lots of interesting places and events that would have otherwise been completely exclusive (if I'd even heard of them). Sold it just after the 'already uncool' time had hit (to perhaps someone a little behind themselves) - so once the sale had been reconciled with the rentals (about 10~15 of them) I discovered I had actually made a profit :o It's all in the timing - and perhaps the market characteristics of where I was located weren't as flooded as it might be in the States. Anyway, just saying, it can work out ;)

Google image search 'brutalist architecture' - there are some examples of the style that capture peoples imagination (in a positive light). At least an attempt to make the building functional. Unlike, some other styles - on a whole I'd prefer it to most of the latest examples of 'hi-tech' Done well, everything has it's place ... ;)

Was the reflex shutter developed by Bell & Howell Co. ?
Chris Millar replied to Simon Wyss's topic in ARRI
You mentioned the 'B' word... The amount of misinformation on the H16 shutter on the net is amazing - funny thing is, some of it actually comes from the manufacturer itself. After pulling apart and super-16'ing both a SB and an EL I took some measurements of the shutter and the prism light loss - I don't have the numbers in the country at the moment - but they are different enough to be note-worthy, perhaps not so much in exposure but more that the incorrectness isn't even 'linear' with the information provided in some spec sheets. Seems like marketing were perhaps after easy numbers ...
