  1. eh... you soft lad.. we would have to wake up 30 minutes before we went to bed.. and be murdered in cold blood by the DOP everyday .. that were film making before these Southern jesses took over..
  2. Ok thanks.. its not just a food show .. so you might survive it :)..
  3. Phil is correct.. I remember working in the UK film industry.. we would chew on pebbles for lunch.. and clean gear with our tongues.. and be regularly thrashed with Birch for the smallest misdemeanor .. or was that school..? toughen up you cup cakes in the US.. with your gleaming C stands, and honey wagons..
  4. There is an on line trailer.. but TBH Im a bit disappointed with it.. its not a drama.. doc/travel/food type program.. but DDP are a very good post house that did Mad Max.. I thought it might be interesting to see how Slog3.cine can look in 90% natural light situations with a "real" grade..
  5. Carl.. Its called Destination Flavor Scandinavia .. on SBS.. with Adam Liaw .. sort of Road/Food type show 7 X 35 mins.. Denmark/Sweden/ Norway and put to Svalbard in the arctic ..
  6. Yes that does sound a bit grim.. the other side of the.. "cheap digital camera,s will democratize film making.." line.. or Producers can get more blood from a stone.. there is some point where you just cant make a film unless you have X amount of money.. even Tangerine had quite a bit spent on post to get it looking decent.. just shooting on an iPhone 5 straight to screen it will look like pretty bad I,d think..!
  7. I dont charge separately for the lens, mattbox, batteries,SxS cards.. etc.. just a price for the "camera package".. thats a pretty basic thing right :) you need the camera and accessories to make a moving image.. the only to not pay for this ,is to put on a play or make a radio program.. nes par?
  8. I have a series wot I shot coming on air in Australia SBS,March 31st 7.30pm.. I shot with Sony F5, XAVC Slog3.cine.. grading was done by DDP studio,s (good enough for Johnny Seal, good enough for me ! ).. Canon CN7 zoom.. If there are any Oz based DP,s would want to have a look how well graded Slog3.cine XAVC can look.. or save arse in my case !.. check it out.
  9. Brussel Sprouts,Nuclear war heads, and Barry Lyndon.. now we are talking ! .. More Gin Vicar..?
  10. "And is it actually worth paying over $10k for a zoom lens when you can pick up a Zeiss Contax for under $1k." Answer.. Yes it is.. Was in the same boat as you are now.. Phil pretty much sums it up.. if you want to avoid adaptors.all the problems of non par focal/breathing.. tiny focus travel etc (AC will hate you) of stills/converted zooms.. then there is CN7 or the Cabrio,s.. both are excellent lenses, you might get the "non 4K" spec older 19-90 Cabrio,s cheap, relatively speaking :).. these days.. The CN7 is quite warm.. warmer than the CN primes.. otherwise just warm it up in grading.. But there is nothing in the middle really.. and due to the inherent cost of a "quality" cine zoom I dont think there ever will be.. except for second hand.. theres nothing you can do.. you just have to spend the money.. good investment..at least they dont change much.. and can be used on any camera ..
  11. the 800% is the DR percentage.. over the standard 709.. Slog is 1300% I think.. I use an F5 with the 709.800 MLUT .. but I think its alot better than the A7 "gamma assist" which only corrects contrast I think .. not colour as well... my comment was more for daniel ..Slog or any real log will look like crap.. till its bought back, hopefully skillfully .. to 709 for tv anyway..display gamma.. how people light, expose and judge focus off an Slog image I,ll never know..
  12. Your setting white to 95% in Slog ??? thats a REC709 level.. the point of white/grey being set low in Slog to get your DR in the highlights.. The noise that you see in Slog gamma will all go when corrected for 709.. don't judge anything off the capture gamma.. ideally you would never even see it.. its meant to look muddy .. Not sure if that DSLR has MLUT,s.. but as Phil says.. and its what Ive been doing for a few years with out any problems .. set your MLUT (monitor) to REC709.800 and shoot.. forget the voodoo .. :).. but you have to know why those levels are set low in the first place.. XDCAM User site has all the info.. PS the sony 59% is reflected white.. (95% for REC709) not 109% white clipping level..
  13. if your subject is static they will do a junk matt around your subject.. you dont need to light the whole screen evenly from corner to corner.. just whats directly behind your actor .. you can shoot off the screen, have stands, boom etc in shot as long as they dont interfere with the subject.. no need for cheesy hair lights.. just make sure your subject is far enough away from the green screen.. this is probably the main thing to worry about.. shadows on the screen and green reflection .. As above Kino,s would be a much better idea..
  14. "Robin, I would hope that people would achieve a "film look" with any camera, however, they usually leave the grading as if it were just the LOG image! :)" haha yes maybe true of the C300 Log lite as its pretty much just a hyper gamma curve equivalent .. but at least Slog2/3 is much more a true very flat Log gamma and you cant just broadcast it :).. but yes I know what you mean.. trends and fashion have always existed I guess.. some of that super soft diffusion/blown highlights work on big films from name DP,s from the 70,s can look a bit naff by todays standards/ sensibilities .. no doubt large DOF, very vibrant colors REC 709 look will be the rage in 10 years time.. and all the washed out/SDF look will have film students smirking into their cappuccino,s .. :)
  15. Agree totally.. the trouble is its being put forward as stuff that no one has known about.. even Oscar winning DP,s.. You thought the auto pilot quip was silly ? :)
  16. "While one could certainly do it by eye (trial and error) it's just so much more easier, satisfying, and accurate to do it by the numbers. The numbers allow one to convince oneself that a proposed practical implementation will be inevitable, rather than just a wait-and-see possibility." Well thats the difference between a DIT and DP then I guess.. of course every DP who is working with digital should have a good knowledge of what Tom has pointed out.. its not news .. its been documented before Toms discovery.. even I know about it.. in fact its pretty basic .. But surely as a DP your eyes are more important than numbers.. thats like saying a pilot would fly into a mountain because the auto pilot computer says its not there..
  17. "So go ahead, ignore me, and don't progress" hehe now come on Tom.. this is a wind up post isnt it.. :)
  18. "I actually don't care that much about what ISO this or that DP uses, as long as they understand the ins and out, and that each ISO has clearly defined advantages." "Wanting to be an "artist of light and darkness" shouldn't make one skip the nitty gritty about how digital cameras work (like, for example, that half of a sensor's values are dedicated to the last stop of highlights before clipping)." Do you not think this comes over as a bit pompous though Tom.. from your Id pic you seem to be a youngish guy.. where do you get the idea that the average DP doesn't know about shifting the grey level .. let alone Deakins/Chivo et el.. is there something in the water students drink these days :)..
  19. Also younger people are not watching broadcast anymore.. and the broadcasters were charging alot of money to show these commercials on hit shows/target audience .. As Satsuki says.. you can now get that "film look" not just from a very expensive Panavsion package that arrives in a truck.. but with an F5.. with decent glass. Slog and a decent grade.. The web based "infomercial " for the " Yoof " based target audience is a booming market.. massive market penetration for very low cost.. good for alot of people DP,s like me.. but not so for the $25,000 a day DP.. Im sure those shoots still exist.. but alot less of them for sure.. and probably really have to be a name DP to get them too.. so agency can justify cost /brag to their client :)
  20. haha very good sir.. Gregg you need a large Gin.. relax a bit.. its humor ..
  21. ha the glorious A1.. takes me back..Nice Merc..
  22. Just a thought, though not exactly your department.. but if you can give the DP some idea of where the sun is at certain times of day in that street.. Im sure it would be gladly received.. although I guess they will be doing this at a later date too..
