Hi-Speed shots for low budget shoots
Jan Tore Soerensen replied to Sraiyanti Haricharan's topic in General Discussion
Maybe something like a a6300, a7s or GH4, that can shoot highspeed in full hd? -
Really liked the grading here! How did you light this?

CInematographers should not be paid... What?
Jan Tore Soerensen replied to Tyler Purcell's topic in General Discussion
Please define "making it". Are you talking about financial freedom? Being able to live off of filmmaking? The main problem for people who are trying to make it in the creative industry, is selling themselves. You need experience to effectively do that. Experience with cold calling and building networks. It also takes time and practise, which people do not have in todays society. If they haven't "made it" in 6 months, they give up. As a person with extensive background in sales, I like to believe I have an edge on fellow creatives when it comes to actually making money off my passion. But it is, and always will be though out there for a hustler. Noone told you it would be easy. -

I admire you for achieving that. Very honestly. But I do not believe that makes you an expert on what life choices people should make for their happiness. Wanna be a doctor? Great. Wanna be a farmer? Go for it! Cinematographer? Go shoot. -
CInematographers should not be paid... What?

true that. Absolutely. Yep. A sacrifice I have made to pursue my passion. I had a good paying job which I quit to do this. I would be less happy with a 9-5 and a mortgage. -

I just saw it half an hour ago, and also commented on it. Income will reflect your value in the marketplace. If you have no, or very low value, you can't expect someone to pay you well for your work. That being said, if you can shoot something for $50 to get started, I'd say that's worth it, to get the experience, and start building a portfolio. Money isn't happiness. -
Thoughts on Film and Digital

I live in Scandinavia. Where would I send a 16mm film for scan? Which camera would you recommend for a start? Never shot on film before. -
Which lenses are these?

Yeah, the bokeh was soo creamy. And ofc the set placement and grading was just very well executed. Loved the pastel colors. -

Thank you! Such beautiful imagery from them! -
The music video "Begin again" has a stunning bokeh. Which lenses are these, from the bts video? First glimpse of it at :41

DSLR revolution is over but...
Jan Tore Soerensen replied to Max Field's topic in General Discussion
There is tons of equipment made for these cameras at an affordable price. They are pretty decent in low light, portable and durable. As a beginner, why go for something else than a t5i, 7d or similar? If there was a better alternative in this bracket you would already know about it. -
Great images. I also liked the music a lot.

Presence is much more important than whatever your looks are. Confidence, knowledge, body language and communication. All these are more valuable than looks. This can come from dressing well, taking care of your body, good posture and being good at what you do.

People think they are uglier or prettier than they are. You probably look just normal.

Looks like a drone shot all the way to me, actually. There is a slight shiver to the image.

This one really suprised me. So, a few weeks ago, the local cinema upgraded both sound and picture. I don't really visit the cinema too often, but some films catch my eye, and I just have to see it. Today, we entered the cinema whilst the commercials were rolling, and I am happy to see that we were given good seats. In the back, but also centre screen. Dolby Atmos demos started rolling after commercials, and while I have seen these demos in Hi-Fi shop systems before, this was something else. Very powerful and immersive. The image was also extremely detailed and full. Now, I am a big horror guy, and I really hope to make a horror some day, so I really hoped it would be good, but I didn't want to expect too much. It really didn't take long for the movie to catch the audience. Great. And I mean great, sound. Some people were nervously laughing to cover their fear. I found myself really tense at several occations, which is a good sign in itself. The cinematography is different, and something we saw in Revenant. It's wide, and they use it to slowly reveal the environment. It was all very cold and blue, but I really like the look. I though to myself that it looked like Alexa footage, but I haven't checked IMDB yet. One scene really impressed me. We are at the ground, and a car is passing. The camera moves at a fairly fast pace towards the top window of a house in front of us. We go through the glass window, and into the halls of the house. No cuts. The movie used the cinematography in a clever way through the movie, although it sometimes felt a bit forced. It did work though. Storywise it was OK. What I liked more, was the way the kept suspense, and selection of the paranormal portrays. It was believable. I might call this my best cinema experience so far. I'm not gonna try to make this an elaborate review, so I'll stop here. It is definitely worth a watch though.

Next time I'll just move it 3 feet from the window and double the wattage. -
The main reason for shooting on Blackmagic atm, is entry-level RAW footage. But shooting raw is a pain in the ass workflow, and it takes up more space than internal 4k footage. If that wasn't enough, the second you start shooting ProRes instead of RAW, you lose around 1 stop of DR(dont quote me on this one). Now, for paid projects, I have no problem with this. But for messing around, learning and shooting mostly in natural light, I don't see the point. I can't make my mind up though. Because I love the flexibility of RAW; but I hate the workflow.
