  1. Nice work, especially the lighting. But titles kinda fuzzy and too fast to read. Put some nudity in next time. That is always a boost, even if implied.
  2. for...just a tad softer. Does developing at a different gamma require a change in chemistry or development time?
  3. Sure, count digital BW like was mentioned...if it impressed you. We are just throwing out film options to study.
  4. The cost of living has skyrocketed. It has especially hit the non-commercial artists that do 'art for art's sake' hard. Here is my take on the food end of it... https://danieldteolijrarchivalcollection.wordpress.com/2018/05/14/it-is-pretty-for-the-artist-to-live-nowadays/
  5. B&W digital is a mass of gray gradations. To emulate film better they need to make less gradations with digital B&W and develop an organic grain structure. Even if they can't do the grain well, the cutting back on the gradations would be a big help. I think it was William Klein who said it best...'**(obscenity removed)** the mid-tones.'
  6. When the lab is instructed to develop at 0.6 gamma what does that mean? Are they saying the film is overexposed by 40% and the lab is to develop at 60% of the normal time? There was a note to the film lab by Robby Muller in the film 'Down By Law' that mentioned this in the special features.
  7. Wow, look at this thing. For a 50mm lens. Can you imagine a set of hoods for the set of lenses? https://www.ebay.com/itm/Technicolor-50mm-Lens-Shade-for-3-Strip-35mm-Motion-Picture-Camera/282797404149?hash=item41d809eff5:g:VO8AAOSwbP1aTn21 Did Technicolor morphe into another company and survive in a different form or did it die with Technicolor process?
  8. Nice job with overall look, (costumes, lighting, etc.) but seemed like too many pans and pans are kinda fast. I didn't have time to look at it all, my slow rustbelt internet kept jamming. Send in some more projects. Good luck!
  9. I read cell phones are going to 8k video shortly. With all the $$ film scanners charge why isn't 8K or even 12K the standard??
  10. Hyperallergic is the left's view of art and film. They banned me from commenting on their posts long ago, but I still read it. I always like to hear both sides of the story. The American Society of Cinematographers, which was founded in 1919, only admitted their first female Director of Photography in 1980. The organization meant to advance and protect the art of cinematography remains one of the most exclusive and important societies in Hollywood in terms of prestige and influence. Since 1980, women have remained underrepresented in the Society, representing less than 5% of the membership. In 2018, cinematographer Rachel Morrison was nominated for an Oscar for her work on Dee Rees’s Mudbound, the sole only woman acknowledged in the category that year. For this year’s awards, yet again, there’s not a single woman DP in contention. 11. Is there software that can restore old sound and get rid of some of the snap, crackle and pop? Something about $50 or $75? Thanks
  12. https://blog.freesound.org/?p=1064 by Craig Smith Nice archival photos too!
  13. I'm still looking for 1 gallon water samples from San Francisco, Boston and Seattle to test and include in my water testing archive. I would also like to test tap water from New Orleans. I will pay the full $20 large USPS flat rate box cost for shipping me (4) 1 liter bottles of tap water. In exchange for your work you get to see what is in your tap water. If you don't have (4) 1 liter bottles I will pay you to buy full bottles of soda or drink and you can consume or empty the contents to use the bottles after they are rinsed. It is amazing what is in perfectly clear water. https://danielteolijr.wordpress.com/2016/01/18/6035/ write direct if interested: w1000w@aol.com
  14. Film traditionalists can breathe a sigh of relief. In an increasingly digital age, many directors still prefer to shoot on celluloid film. https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/behind-screen/studios-up-kodak-deals-keep-celluloid-film-alive-1274709 The five major studios — Disney, NBCUniversal, Paramount, Sony and Warner Bros. — have inked new deals with Kodak, the film manufacturer said Wednesday, committing to buying undisclosed amounts of motion picture celluloid and thus guaranteeing its continued use for the foreseeable future. The first such pacts between Kodak and the studios were struck in early 2015, roughly 18 months after the film manufacturer emerged from bankruptcy protection. At the time, its film sales had plummeted as the use of digital imaging technology rose, and the agreements were designed to keep Kodak’s film manufacturing business going. <><><><> Don't know if 'many' is true. Do you think many directors do prefer film?
  15. Now, I read a lot about 'scared of failing' and rejection here. Some of you may quit before you even start. Your mindset predisposes you to failure by telling you can't do it. The only way you can tell if you can do it is to give it a go. My advice is to work blind, without preconceived notions and prejudices. You will have to be the judge about how much you can lose in the testing process. Obviously some gambles may not be worth the risk. Here is an old post I wrote a few years ago. It discusses this topic of failing in your mind before you start. NSFW...ish https://danielteolijr.wordpress.com/2017/06/06/dont-quit-before-you-even-start-work-blind/
  16. Op...You should put your portfolio link after your posts.
  17. Why can't you produce with what you got? Has this been an ongoing problem throughout your career?
  18. Yesterday's office... On the set of Deep Valley with Ted 'Sound of Music' McCord taking a light reading. Looks like back in the day some of the DP's went to work in a tie and coat.
  19. Never knew there was so many. https://www.empireonline.com/movies/features/movie-moments/ Anything underway now?
  20. Shoot a color bar and look at it on a color balanced monitor, preferable desktop. I've had poor luck with laptops. All of mine are off color. My tablet seem pretty good for color. Good luck!
  21. Dunno? But dye is not always stable Simon. I used film cleaner and it removed some of the dye on the 16mm. And don't know if it was Sonochrome. I will see if I can scratch them to test. You can see here that Kodak dye transfer dyes were water soluble...at least the ones used for making paper prints. My tests show Kodak dyes start running with as little as 30 minutes of soaking prints in water. nsfw https://danieldteolijrarchivalcollection.wordpress.com/2018/10/03/inkjet-water-damage-tests/
  22. In theory yes Uli. I understand living expenses have gone through the roof and everyone needs $$ nowadays. So can't blame forums that want $$. But I have to budget to buy a roll of $35 post card stamps. Every expense has to get scrutinized.
