  1. I have shot with the Zeiss Super Speeds mkII on three short films in the past. I have always rented from bigger rental companies such as Keslow, BeCine etc. From what I have gathered, you can get the mkII both coated and uncoated, and every time I rented them from the bigger vendors they ask if I want with or without coating. I always choose with coating as I like the look better. Especially for the type of projects I do. For my upcoming shoot, I'm choosing them again, but this time I'm renting them from Sharegrid. I have messaged most of the owners, asking if they are coated or uncoated, but none of them knows. Some list "it has the magical T coating", but I don't know if that means a different coating or the regular coating? Anyway, due to low budget, I want to rent the ones with the cheapest price (due to budget restrictions), but none of them seems to have a clue if they are coated or not. So I guess my question is: Is it true that you can get coated and uncoated for the mkII version? When I research this online, it seems like people refer to the uncoated version as the mkI version (B-speeds) not mkII. Also, is there anyway to figure out if they are coated or not by just looking at them? They won't let me test the lenses, but I could stop to have a look. Thanks
  2. Hi all, I just wanted to share a new online library that I've been working on with my focus puller to share our lens and filter tests with other filmmakers, cinematographers, directors, camera crews etc. It's called the LFL - Lens & Filter Library and is available at rwpreisner.com/lfl So far there are over 80 lens and filter tests with many more to come in the next few months. It's currently in the early stages of development and I'm looking for feedback to see how useful people find it to be and what improvements they would like to see. I'm also looking to see how useful the choice of tests are to those that use the library. It's available to be saved as a quick shortcut on IOS & Android devices so can essentially function as an App on Ipad and Android as well as the videos being available in 4k for viewing on larger monitors. It's appeared a couple of times in the BSC magazine news and they have been supportive. You can read their short article about it here Have a look and it'd be great to know your thoughts!
  3. Full set serviced less than a year ago by Charles Pickel at Serious Gear. The glass is pristine aside from a tiny pinprick on the rear element coating of the 9.5mm, has absolutely no effect on the image whatsoever. Message me if you're interested and want photos of the individual lenses, they really are absolutely pristine! Markings are in feet, NOT metric. Here are a couple projects I shot with these lenses, they produce some really beautiful images: https://www.fiokarpenko.com/thick-and-heavy https://www.fiokarpenko.com/howl Looking to get $14,000 for the full set.

  8. When shooting on a MFT sensor, in my case an Lumix GH6, do the characteristics of the focal length of the glass stay the same? For example: Let's say you want to shoot a nice portrait shot. Because of the so called 'crop factor' you would use a focal length of 25mm instead of the usual 50mm, to have the same frame. However would mean that the subject in the frame would have the characteristics of the 25mm? And does this then mean it is still better to use a real 50mm (which becomes a 100mm) to get the best portrait shot?

  19. Hey everyone! I'm getting a super 16 camera in the near future and am in the market for some lenses, preferably something more budget friendly. Does anyone have any primes they're looking to get rid of? Ideally looking for a set of 3 fast lenses, something like a 7mm, 16mm, and 25mm. Thank you!
  20. There seems to be a problem with my Schneider-Kreuznach 10mm lens for Arriflex ST. Whenever I've used it it's produced a cloudy/fogging image (see image) - this happens whether I use a matte box or not. I enquired with one lens servicing/repair company here in the UK and they suggested that the doublet elements might have separated, if this was indeed the case, they quoted £450 to fix it. If it was an issue with the coating, however, they said that couldn't be fixed by them. I should say that they were going by the pictures i sent and didn't have the lens itself to inspect. Anyway, what's your advice regarding this? £450 sounds a great deal of money to spend on the lens, especially considering you can buy another one for less than that. What should I do? Any suggestions? It would be a shame for the lens to simply not be used anymore.
  21. Hi, everyone! Gonna be shooting a film with a look rooted in Jazz photography from the likes of William Claxton, Dennis Stock and others known for the marvelous images they created around that beautiful genre. Obviously, the film's aesthetic's going to borrow a hell of a lot from these great photographers... However, what I'm most interested in is the B&W film stocks that were around the time in which the most iconic artists were photographed: the 1950s. So, on the one hand, what I'm wondering is if there's anyone in the room with an idea about the the rolls of B&W film available at that time and their characteristics. But on the other hand, I'd like to know if anyone knows where can I find information on the way these photograpers worked, which is to say the lenses and equipment they used, the way they developed their film and created they final shot in the darkroom, etc. Also welcome is information on the film stocks used to shoot movies or documentaries around the 50s. My guess is even at that time Double-X was the real deal, but... You know. A guess is a guess.

  23. Hi, Working as camera assistant I came across combination of RED Monstro 8K VV and Sigma FF lenses. All good, except 14mm… That marks beginning of Compact Matte Box. I have found this type of product very useful in various fast pacing situations as wll great for gimbals and other lightweight setups. www.nd9.eu Available for 80/95/110/114 mm size as well 14mm Sigma prime. 24. Currently, my 5008 MS is in Sweden with Björn being serviced, re-celled, and having a Angenieux 8-64mm collimated - it's a lens I'm very happy with as I've always found it to be sharper than the Schneider 6-66mm. That said, I've recently been offered a chance to buy a 10mm 1.8 retrofocus Angenieux which I've seen be compared to the Cinegon 10mm! But is it worth buying this and then paying for it to be collimated if I've already got a 8-64mm?
