  1. Hi, I'm student of cinematography and I'm looking for s16 camera package (preferrably Aaton or Arri sr) or/and s16 lens nojusdra at gmail, or p.m. here Thanks! Nojus
  2. After seeing some old forum posts talking about creating a DIY video tap for older 16mm cameras, I thought I’d give it a shot. There’s an old thread about exactly the camera I’m using, an Eclair ACL, but the photo of the rig that they posted is no longer on the internet. So I put a super rough $20 thing together (plus an iPhone 8+). You can see it here: https://imgur.com/gallery/aNxfqXV Any suggestions? There are definitely some things that could be improved. It takes a while to set up since it doesn’t want to stay in place unless I use tape. It’d be nice to have a more rigid arm, but I’m not sure I could find one that’s the exact length and angle needed (that’s why I ended up with the “gooseneck”). And for actual shooting I’ll need to make sure that I’ve covered up all possible points where light can come in the viewfinder so it doesn’t cause light leaks.
  3. As title says, some Super16 lenses for sale. The Cooke Varokinetal is just a simply incredible lens; as sharp as it gets especially with Super16. This is an original Super16 done by Cooke themselves from the factory, not a conversion. Lens was serviced by Optitek about one year ago (an inner element had some haze and aperture was malfunctioning, Jacek cleaned it right up and brought everything back to spec, and of course did a standard CLA, along with conversion to PL mount and adding a 0.8 focus gear), and has not been used since servicing except to test it and play with it a bit. Has Chrosziel Fluid Zoom damper attached on zoom ring. Body isnt perfect, has the typical finish wear that comes with normal use, but who really cares about that? Glass and coatings are purdy, and the image it puts out is just lovely. Some of the usual light cleaning marks on each, nothing of note. Only thing it's missing is a front ring to bring the front to standard size for matte box...Ive used a janky setup with some rubber bands to allow my mattebox to work on it (seen in pictures). Mattebox not included; I'll leave the front OD ring up to the buyer to get, so they can have one done to their preference. Price: $4500 USD Kinoptik Primes: Interesting little lenses. They have some aberrations wide open as is typical of tiny little fast aperture lenses of the period; but when stopped down to 2.8 and smaller, they sharpen up beautifully. Flare on both is very well controlled, as is breathing...12.5mm has very little and the 9mm has NONE. 9mm F1.5 has focus tabs, 12.5mm doesn't, but I imagine the buyer will want to get focus gears anyway. These things are just so damn small and light, they would make for great lenses for use with steadicam/gimbal. The PL is mounts on each are simple adapter type, and they work just fine. 12.5mm has somewhat stiff focus ring, so it could use a CLA; 9mm rings turn smoothly. $1100 for the 9mm, $900 for the 12.5mm. If you want all three lenses, the Cooke and both Kinoptiks, I'll do a package deal at $6,000 total. All prices not including shipping/paypal fees. Thanks for looking.
  4. I work in TV, so when it comes to 16mm I'm just an enthusiast, and all of my 16mm footage so far has been on my Krasnogorsk-3, which has served me well. Having said that, I would like to eventually shoot some more ambitious projects on film (requiring sound, longer takes, etc), but unfortunately the closest place I could rent a film camera from is about five hours away. Because of this, I occasionally find myself browsing eBay for cameras, and often Regular 16 cameras such as Arri SRs, Aatons, or CP-16s are available. I can't help but wonder how worthwhile buying a Regular 16 camera is though; Super 16 seems to be preferable in every way. I guess Regular 16 is good if you want a 4:3 aspect ratio, but it seems like most people would prefer to shoot Super 16 and crop the sides instead. Likewise, if you wanted a wider aspect ratio, you could crop the top and bottom of your Regular 16 image, but Super 16 would require less cropping and give you a bigger image area. It's also worth noting that many Regular 16 cameras can be converted to Super 16, but for the cost it seems like you might as well have just bought a Super 16 camera in the first place. As I said, I'm not a professional when it comes to film, so I'm not sure if I will ever be able to justify purchasing my own professional-level 16mm camera. However, the (generally) lower cost of Regular 16 cameras does make it a little tempting sometimes. What do you guys think, are Regular 16 cameras worth investing in? Note: Yes, I recognize that both Regular 16 and Super 16 would widely be considered "obsolete" these days, so strictly speaking they probably aren't worth "investing" in. I just mean this in the context of those who enjoy shooting celluloid.
  5. Hello, I just got the results from a camera test and I'm a bit puzzled about the format test. The camera assistant shot a 1.66 reference but in the result the limits are way too close to the edge. As you can see in the image attached, the top limit is even outside the film frame! I've done this test before so I know how it should look like and I'm also sure the test was done properly. My question is if anyone has experienced something similar before or has any idea what might be causing this? The camera is an Arri SR3. Thanks!
  6. looking for a good clean example 8-64mm. thanks, david

  9. Hi, I am getting rid of my super16 Aaton kit. i bought it from an exBBC documentary maker a few years ago and the project that I was going to use it for never happened. so now it’s surplus to requirement. it’s an Aaton XTR prod. three mags, I think these are ltr mags that have been adapted. batteries (1 definitely needs re-celling) 10 lenses made up of Carl zeiss primes, including distagon and planar, various vintage lenses, and zooms including canon. Matt boxes, filters, changing bags, a super sexy leather sound protector for the mags - this kit has been all over the world. All in flight cases - this is a pretty special kit. also have a nagra 4.2 (ex London film school) complete with all cables etc for a complete analogue kit I would prefer to sell as complete kit. I will consider splitting the nagra and camera I WILL NOT split camera kit from the lenses. ive not found a compatible kit to gauge a selling price. if I’m being crazy (too much or too little feel free to correct me) I am in Lancashire UK - I would prefer buyer to inspect kit before purchase. bank transfer on collection only. happy to wait for the right buyer for this kit. £15,000 for nagra and shooting kit Please contact for more detailed photos.

  15. Hello, I am looking for a used super 16 package with a PL mount. I'm interested in a SR2 or SR3 or an Aaton XTR Prod. If anyone is interested in selling please let me know! Thanks!
  16. Hello I just got back some super16 footage from the lab and the scan from one roll is showing scratches on the right side. I was very surprised by this, since we were using a magazine that caused no problems in previous footage on the same project. I can't think of anything out of the ordinary that might have happened during the shooting this day to cause such a big damage. We shot with an Arri SR3 that was well maintained and maybe no weird noises. I'm already double checking with the lab if this is really in the negative or if there's any chance that it's due to a malfunction during the scan but would love to get another opinion. Attached some stills where the scratches are visible. Thanks in advance for your thoughts!
  17. Hi all, I own an Aaton XTR s16 camera. Currently I have a PL hard mount on the camera and have only used the camera with rented PL glass, but I also own the original Aaton Mount, which has a much shorter FFD than the PL mount (40mm compared with PL 52mm). So I’m looking for adapters that would allow me to put vintage lenses (with ffds between 40mm and 52mm) on the camera that will cover the s16 film plane (i.e. m42, Canon FD, Nikon f, etc). Does anyone know if there are any adapters out there that would allow me to put any of these lenses on my Aaton camera mount? If so, where can I find them? Thanks for your help! - Clay
  18. I've ordered a Bolex REX 3 and I am so excited! I've also gotten a Sekonic L398, so I've really got the cliche film student package, haha. Honestly, the simplicity/limitations of the tools is what I find inspiring and fun. A few things I'm still trying to grasp: - Shutter angle: When to adjust and how, for effect or utility - Aperture: How to compensate for the viewfinder? - In what situations is it practical to push or pull the film more than an aesthetic choice? - common pitfalls to avoid? - best places to buy film stock? - Is using a digital camera for reference an effective way to prevent light flicker? this is one i really want to avoid lol Thanks to anyone who answers, any info is really appreciated. I am new to the forums and this site is a wonderful resource

  20. Hello, I'm looking for a Canon 8-64mm t2.4 OR 7-64mm t2.6 OR 6.6-66mm t2.7. I'm based in Copenhagen, Denmark. For tax and shipping concerns a lens currently inside the EU would be preferable - but I could pay for shipping from overseas if the price is right. Let me know what you've got! Best, Peter Hammer Documentary filmmaker
  21. Hi, for sale is Canon 7-63mm T2.6 zoom lens. Serial number is 10303 (so it's been made around 2003) Lens is very sharp, even wide-open, has no noticable breathing when focusing. Lens is in mint condition, with minimal signs of usage on barrel and absolute pristine glass. Comes with lens support, both caps, in custom metal case. 22. I have a set of Cooke Kinetal primes I'm looking to rehouse and the adapt for an Aaton XTR PL mount. I have the 9, 12.5, 17.5, 25, and 50 So far the only house I've found who will work on them them is asking 3.5k per lens, anyone have a tip on a more affordable vendor?
  23. My Eclair ACL has a little cartridge that slides in in front of the film and behind the lens. The cartridge has a circle cutout that is about the image size of 16mm, and the intention of it is that you can load it with a circle gel to act as a filter. If I could use this feature of the camera instead of using square glass filters on the front element, I’d save about 10x the money and I’d be able to have more filtration options. I’ve got a couple questions for those who have used filter gels like this before, though: 1. Are gel filter sheets of lower quality than glass filters? Will the image be different between using an ND filter on the front element versus using a gel behind the lens? 2. Will the possibility that of the gel not being perfectly flat (since it is flexible) affect the image quality? This is what I’m most worried about; that it would cause flares. 3. More practically, the camera I have was converted to super-16. Does anyone know if this filter holder covers the full super-16 image? I just discovered this feature of the camera the other night since the previous owner had it taped up (which I assume indicates I should tape it over if I end up using it or not, to prevent light leaks).
  24. Even though I’ve rented cine lenses (mostly CP.2) in the past and have used others on set, I’ve always owned only still/photos lenses. I’ve always put UV filters (specifically B+W brand) on every lens I have—makes me less nervous about cleaning the glass in the case of a smudge or dust, and if it gets scratched up, it’s easily replaced. Also, I’ve read that UV filters help when shooting film, even though I’ve never noticed a difference with digital (convo for another day). But I’ve just brought two super 16 Zeiss super speed Mk. II which I don’t think have front threads. The fronts have 80mm diameters. Are cine lenses always left bare? Is there any way to protect them besides the lens cap? I like to shoot out in the world (i.e. encountering elements occasionally), so is a matte box the only solution?
  25. Just got an ACL today. Seems to be working fine. I think this ACL is equipped with the heavy-duty motor (but not the fancy crystal sync at all speeds motor). The speeds increase when I turn the fps dial. But there’s this blank option. When I turn to it, it makes the motor go really slow, like slower than 8fps. What is that? I’ve included a photo.
