  1. I am selling 15 rolls of 16mm Kodak Vision3 200T 7213. I got these directly from Kodak 3 years ago. They are factory sealed and have been in a humidity-controlled dedicated film fridge for that entire time. I would love to get $100/roll for them and sell all of them at once, but I am willing to negotiate if you are interested and even more willing to negotiate if your a student. Captain Phillips, Beasts of the Southern WIld and Hurt Locker are just a few great films in the last few years shot on the robust format of super16 :) Nathan
  2. I'm 16 years old... Yes somewhat young but I have lots of inspiration and I'd say I'm fairly talented with multi-media. I've been learning after effects for over a year now, using it to edit Call of Duty gameplay which particularly involves VFX, Motion tracking, editing techniques(art), cinematic, time-remapping and editing of-course. It is actually very impressive how the Call of Duty editing community has mastered after effects with call of duty footage. Any of you should absolutely take the time to check out some very talented editors; if you're interested i'll refer you to some of them! It is a whole new level of editing and I'm grateful to have started with something without having to use IRL footage from a camera. I could now apply myself to IRL footage and such. I truly want to master a position in the film industry. I'm so inspired by some films and the art of cinematography mixed with editing.. Whether it's an editor, cinematographer, camera-man, or even the whole package. Whether it's to my own profit, a big company, a festival.. I want to learn all about cameras and technique just like I did for editing. Question #1: I'd like to know about what sort of education and/or diploma is needed to get a job at a big company or a big film project.. Those camera men/cinematographers who reach Hollywood; what got them there? Was it recognition and connections or was it schooling/diplomas etc. ? A few examples of cinematographers/camera men ? Question #2: What camera aspects should I look into? (I'm new to the whole thing) I have done some research on the Panasonic Lumix GH3 and came to mind that there are so many features and aspects to reconsider before I buy a camera, a film maker uses that camera and there's a very nice outcome (a slight panoramic, film looking, well toned).. References to some books, youtubers or links would be great. That's it for now... I hope I'm not asking for too much, I guess I could tell I'm pretty passionate about this lol. Thanks !   3. Hi Everybody at the www.cinematography Forum, Thank you for everybody's wise words and great advice, I have come on a great amount since I have started following this forum. I have just finished a short film (about 35 minutes in duration) for my 3rd, and Final, year in University. I am studying 'Film & Television Production' in the UK and would love any creative/constructive criticism that people have so that I can improve/gain some skills. This is my first short film I have shot & lit myself although I have worked on other capacity's on some very small independent films. Here is a trailer that our group have produced, i'm looking for advice to do with camerawork/lighting rather than trailer editing (as I only had partial input on this). Obviously it goes without saying we don't have copyright for the songs used but this is okay for our module: This was shot on a 5D mk II (as is commonplace for student films).   4. Hello there, I am new to this forum so hope everyone is okay. I am in my final year at university and my topic of focus is Cinematography. More in depth my focus is Cinematography: How framing and composition can convey a narrative/emotion. I have been doing some research into different styles of art and photography express emotion and their techniques to draw an audience into their work. For example I have been looking into the work of expressionist art work, moving on then into German expressionism which then led to Film Noir (that's all i have got so far in my research). I also have my personal favorite films/tv programs which inspire me with their visual styles and just the general way they shoot. These consist of BBC's Luther, Channel 4's Utopia, La Haine, Lost in Translation, BBC's Sherlock, Ginger and Rosa and The Road. I basically want to open a discussion looking at this topic and get personal opinion off of other cinematographers and just people interested in visual elements. For example, does breaking the rules of composition help create a distorted image, and does that show a characters emotion at that point in time? I shot some rough tests on a C100 looking a lot at how the camera operates etc but also different styles of framing that i have seen on programs and films before. Please check this out and leave me feedback on what you felt the framing gave to the scene and if it worked, if it didnt, or just a general comment (leave it on vimeo if you want).   7. Hello, I right now am a photography student, but I love cinematography. I have heard of many people who start off as photography and then move into cinematography or vice-versa. I was just wondering what you guys think is better. Do you think it is better to get a degree in photography or in cinematography. I have never really done any cinematography stuff but I want to do more in it. I can't decide if it is worth is to transfer majors or not. What do you think? Also if i do end up going with cinematography do you think i would still be able to do photography on the side? I am just lost and looking for a little advice. Please let me know what you think.   8. Hey there, For one of my film management classes I have an assignment for creating my rate card. Basically, I'm looking for the average rate a director of photography position would charge as a day rate in correlation to the location of work (I.e. L.A. Workers Will have different average rate than someone in Kentucky). Along with this, we are studying the importance of not under cutting your competition, so this info would be gratefully appreciated. Thanks! John
  9. Hello, everyone! So I'm a fifth-year college student, but I only realized my "calling" as a cinematographer this past December. I'm a little surprised and upset that it took this long to realize that this is what I need to do with my life, but...that's the way life goes, I guess. I've spoken with some of my teachers in the theater department, and many of them insist that I don't need a film degree to be a cinematographer. However, I can't help but feel as though I'll be at a disadvantage. I'm not getting the training I need to do what I love and want to do. I'm not making the connections I need to be making to be successful. I'm willing to work my tail off, and I want to learn, but breaking into the business, only to learn when I get there, seems a little odd to me. If there's any advice anyone can give me as to what I should consider (short of transferring again and more or less scrapping the education I've gotten so far, because I can't afford to do that), I'd appreciate it greatly!
  10. After a summer of not doing much but making lattes for Hollywood folks and making a short film that I ended up not finishing, I feel behind as a student filmmaker. Are there any simple but effective practices that a person with a camera can get in the habit of to improve their skills? Skills such as: framing, camera movement, lighting, and composition. An example I heard of was to film ten second clips displaying dramatic light changes ie: striking a match in a dark room. I hope many can chime in on this!

I'm a novice filmmaker and have a long way to go before I'm an expert at any aspect of filmmaking -- but the passion and commitment to learn are ever present. This 2-3 minutes film will be advertising sportswear, underwear, womenswear, menswear and home products. Brands such as Alexander McQueen, Anglomania, Astley Clarke, B. Tempt’d, Carvela, Donna Karan, Emilio Pucci, Helmut Lang, Louis Vuitton, Maison Martin Margiela, Paul Frank, Saint Laurent, Ted Bakers, Tods, Victoria Beckham, etc. will be included in the ad. I've already recruited a crew for my fashion ad, two models, one male one female, make-up artist, hair stylist and two photographer for additional editorial shoot. Hi, i am currently coming to the end of my film degree and for my final piece of work i'm writing a research project about film noir's visual style and how different lighting techniques were used and whether the cinematography is ultimately a character. I'm looking to speak to directors/cinematographers/photographers/Gaffers who have used visual techniques from film noir and use replies within my project. (sorry to have to do this on here, i've tried contacting cinematographers directly but i'm just being ignored) My questions: why did you decided to get involved with the project that uses film noir cinematic styles? Why did you use techniques from classic noir? Which lighting set-ups have you used? What were the themes within the scene(s) that you used these techniques? Did you attempt any other lighting set-ups before deciding to use the specific set up for the shoot you were involved in? Would you consider the cinematography of the project you have worked on to be a character? For indoor scenes what type of lights/and how many were used to create the visual 'look'? If you can't answer all the questions thats not a problem, just answers the ones relevant to your project. Also if you could give me details about the project you worked on, or give me a link to the final piece, and your name so i can credit it correctly that would super helpful. Hello, I am a film student working with the A-Minima for the first time, we are renting the equipment from outside the school so I'm trying to find answers about a few problems we've had with the camera. We've had two jams- one about 100ft into the roll, where the film wrapped around the camera at least 8 times ruining about 15ft of film. The second, in the very beginning of the roll the film broke off and none of the film advanced. We heard the first jam happen, but the second we did not. Wondering what might have caused this problem? When we took off the mag to reload after our second jam, the magazine would not snap back onto the camera. I've read a number of threads where people have mentioned the hastle of loading and threading the A-Minima, but none with specific problems. Does anyone have an idea of what might be wrong? And how to tell if the film isn't advancing? Thank you!
  18. I'm in my final year of university creating a 10 minute short film. Our final scene includes a camping a scene with a father and a son, as we're filming at night time we're planning to only shoot with a single light source from a standard camping light, which will be placed just in front of the two actors. Will this be an effective way to shoot this scene? Is there anything else that we can do to make sure that the lighting of this scene looks good? We're filming just by a lake in the middle of a forest so exterior lighting from other sources will be very limited. Any suggestions??

  20. I need some advice to help me decide on a Camera, and I'll give a quick run-down of my situation because I've seen others leave out details on the forum after a brief scan. I'm a Graphic Design student in Toronto, I'm in my 4rth year doing my Design Thesis, and over the past 2 years I've taken more motion graphics/VFX classes than anything else (which is strange to me in a design program mostly based on print and typography) none the less I've found myself heading in the direction of film. I've been doing photography for some time now, I mostly only shoot for personal, but it lead me into film making when I had my Nikon D3100 (by no means a great camera for video) I mostly shoot action sports up until now, some of the atheltes are taking on professional sponsorships for this year, so with that in mind I already needed to upgrade my gear to keep up with the level of deliverables. As of recently I had my camera gear all stolen from me, there is little to no chance I will ever see any of it again. My next intention is to pick up more professional level video camera, something between $2000 and $3500 (Canaidan dollars) and I have NO idea what to pick. Most skate/snowboard/action sport camera men I meet suggest Sony VX series cameras, which to me isn't so appealing, I don't want to be investing an already limited amount of money into something used. I have some minor technical idea of what I'm looking at from playing with my gopro and knowing DSLR technology pretty firmly, but digital camcorders still confuse me when I read the technical specifications, there's just a lot to take in. Beyond action, I do plan to step out into film making, and even hope to try my foot in areas I've studied like advertising.   22. My name is Katelyn, and this is actually my first post on here. I'm hoping to get some good feedback on how I can improve myself in the film industry. In my Film I class, at Webster University, we had to make a film around 5 minutes for our final grade. Everyone did love stories, but I wanted to challenge myself and get out of my comfort-zone and make something different. I wrote, directed, and edited/colored my film. I had a friend of mine film this on his Canon 5D Markii. We both came up with the shots, but he operated the camera. I love hearing people's opinions, because I use those to better myself in the end!   23. Hey everyone, I am currently active duty military. I will be getting out in June 2013 and moving to Los Angeles to go to film school. I want to be a director, but I want to learn every aspect of filmmaking. I understand people believe you don't need film school, but the GI Bill will pay for mine, so I'm going. Originally I was set on going to "Los Angeles Film School" because my friend went there a few years ago and is still working in LA. Now that I have done research on the place, it doesn't sound so good. I am researching many schools in that area now, but I have very limited college credits and no SAT scores. So basically I will need to attend a school that will accept me no matter what, or has low acceptance standards. Any advice or comments are welcome!
  24. Hello, this is my film, 64 cents, which won an award for best Drama at the Cal State San Marcos Film Festival. I co-directed, but did all cinematography of this piece. We received a lot of praise for the camera work among teachers and peers, but I'm looking for more opinions, or what i can improve on.   25. I'm shooting a short period drama in February 2013 in Thurso, Scotland. This is right at the top of the country! I was wondering whether anyone could give me some advice on shooting in such cold conditions. General tips/lessons learned/ dos and donts. I've never shot anything in sub zero temperatures and gale force winds - the last thing I want is to be losing/ breaking a HMI or camera. Just want to be really prepared so any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Dan
