Stanley Kubrick's 18mm

Recommended Posts

So I just learned that one of Stanley Kubrick's favorite lenses was an 18mm Cooke Speed Panchro on an Arriflex 35iic.

I'm a little unsure tho, that in terms of 35mm full frame camera (ie. Canon 5DmkII). Would that lens equate to 18mm? if not, then what would be the focal length?

Thanks for the clarification!

Full frame is larger than 35mm motion picture stock. 35mm is roughly equivalent to aps-c sensors (7d, 4k red, alexa).

The 18mm on a full frame is about 29mm.

just to verify the Arriflex 35iic used 35mm stock, so it's full-frame, meaning 18mm is the focal length.

It's a bit less than the Super 35 sized sensors it's works out at 27.5mm for an equivalent FOV - 28mm on full frame 35mm jn practise. For more precise breakdown for the film formats this is better: http://www.panavision.co.nz/main/kbase/reference/tblelenseqvform.asp

Also don't forget the focal length stays the same, so a 18mm lens from a 35mm movie camera will look the same as any other 18mm lens on yr "Full Frame" camera (It's still an 18mm lens) but if you are trying to achieve similar looking footage to Kubrick you will of course find that any 18mm lens gives a wider angle view on "full frame" sensors than would be the case for a 35mm movie camera or a digital camera with an actual Super35mm sized sensor.

The actual focal length stays the same.
