Lighting EXT. Desert at Night
Xavier Plaza replied to Jonathan Bruno's topic in Lighting for Film & Video
I don't know your script but i like a lot in BABEL de desert sequence. I like how Rodrigo Prieto solved the problem of the desert... I think you don't have to show all the desert... Xavier Plaza -

I just saw the trailer today and as you guys I was stunning and pleasant surprise. Great composition, contrast, night ambiance, everything looks good... I follow Claudio career since I don't know when I found his name at the web, then his site... I think this guy it would be one of the best contemporary cinematographers. Perhaps this year it could arrive a nomination... I know Claudio post here sometimes and I want to congratulate him for create an inspirational images, unbelievable work and keep walking... Indiana Jones and Crystal Skull etc.
Xavier Plaza replied to John Holland's topic in On Screen / Reviews & Observations
Hi Jonathan you're right today I read the AC article and agree with you Kaminski have big problems in daylight scenes... And I guess the big thing in his photography was " I worked to create light that supports the story but doesn't necessarily feel realistic..." that summarizes everything... Perhaps all Kaminski fan expect other kind of cinematography like in his latest movies... Perhaps someone can explain me why Kaminski do this at night... "We were shooting our'night' interiors at T8 to T11. You couldn't really trust your eyes because when you walked onto the set, it would look very, very bright. We were shooting 5218 and using HMI lights, so all of a sudden, we were putting on an 85 filter..." -
Indiana Jones and Crystal Skull etc.
Xavier Plaza replied to John Holland's topic in On Screen / Reviews & Observations
Unfortunately just today I saw the film, I agree in several points, overlit exteriors especially in the first sequence outside the warehouse and abuse with the net, unmotivated use... Someone say the film looks like there are several DP's... totally agree with this... I never expect this kind of work from Mr. Kaminski. I don't know if Kaminski wants to use the traditional (cinematography) Indiana Jones style or he lost himself founding the style of this movie, mixing the indiana jones cinematography and his style... Anyone knows who really was the second unit DP at IMB they say Irek Hartowicz but i read in the credits another name... -
Yes I remember Franco... Thank you for your explanation

Someone correct me if I'm wrong but I remember years ago have seen the Natural born killers making of where someone I guess Stone say in the particular desert scene (EXT-DAY) all the crew use acid or mushrooms, perhaps my memory betray me but I remember that. Anyway i guess Natural born killers could be other perfect example, how to achieve the drugs effects using the cinematic language...

You can find references in this web at the subforum Jobs, reel, resumes, . There's a great job/interpretation about drugs (visual styles) by Joshua Reis posted recently, take a look of his job, perhaps helps you. I think you can obtain more interesting effects doing in camera as Chad say using shift and tilt lenses or kaminski lensbabies... Obviously using the correct lighting you could achieve a great work
