  1. P.S Thomas use of modified 17EP-16 APK motor ( 17EP-1414-10 ) with modern crystal sync speed controller based on microprocessor. The acceleration of speed of camera fluently, without jerk. And microprocessor to control of special algorithm of acceleration. This is not variable speed adjust at 50 fps, but, the acceleration of camera at 50 fps for near 1..2 sec.
  2. I don't know about " soft", at for me, the many takes out of focus. If you set of focus of lens at all takes correctly, the problem with adjust of position of ground glass The groun glass of K-3 camera fix by three screws. But, the position of ground glass can be test and adjust with collimator only. The next question, at a some takes, i see , you pulling of zoom and sharpness lost. To need check of flange focal distance of lens mount and zoom lens. If the distances be not congruent, the sharpness will change at change of position of zoom. The next question. What light meter you use ? build K-3 ? I recommed to use of external modern, digital light meter. From other side, not bad.

  4. This is factory made anamorphic mate box of Kinor-35H camera and must be use with support parts ( base plate with 15 mm rods, rod's suport ) from spherical set of mate box of Kinor-35H. This is Konvas-2M with support and spherical mate box of Kinor-35H camera. The anamorphic mate box of Kinor-35H have similar support.

The small button can be protective button, from dropping of font attachment from bracket. 2M matte box not compatible with 1M camera, can be use, but will need modify of base plate. I recommed you to searct of 1M mate box. But, 1M mate box create for spherical lenses, have holder of filters 75x75 mm. To use of matte box with anamoprhic lenses can be problem, because, anamorphic lenses have big angle of view at horizontal line. You can test of matte box with 50mm and 75 mm lens only. If you will need use of filters, i think, the filters need set at hand made holders on front side of lens. The next edition of BAS lenses with square front glass ( simialar of two body versions of NAS lenses ) had special front glass attachments for shoot at short distance and had holes for set of attachmnets on front side of lens. The other idea, you can set of filter before of front glass of spherical lens.
  6. A some complex question, because, LOMO - brand name of lens production company, and what " normal speed" lenses you mean. LOMO manufacturing of lenses many years and had many versions of lenses at every rate of focal distance. For example : 18 mm lenses can be: OKS-1-18-1, OKS-5-18-1. OKS-7-18-1, OKS-10-18-1 and more ets ( i don't know of all versions ). The every version of lens have original optical scheme , original glases, original technical characteristics. That's why to discuss about sharpness only not real. From other side, LOMO had special series of " normal" speed lenses from last generation with " super sharp" characteristics. The 18 mm lens from this series OKS-10-18-1 18 mm F2.0 with resolution of 70 lines per mm at centre. the 18 mm lens from " fast " series OKS-7-18-1 18 mm F 1.4 have resolution of 70 lines per mm at centre too. But, from opinion of my colleagues, the " sharpness series " of LOMO lenses have real sharp image. The other 18 mm lens OKS-5-18-1 18 mm F2.5 have resolution near 65 lines per mm at centre. But, OKS-5-18-1 have optical scheme with 10 components, OKS-7-18-1 have 13 components, OKS-10-18-1 have 11 components. And the real difference of picture from all this lenses can show of test footage only. As for me, I have LOMO prime lenses from "normal " series at version from Kinor-35H camera set, and : " fast speed series " of Kinor-35 H camera too. And can tell you my personal opinion, what, my fast 50 mm, 75 mm lenses have a some soft image from " normal " speed 50 mm and 75 mm lenses. About sharpness, i not see too much difference . ( I told about test image at one position of aperture ). That's why, the final sharpness of lens depend from version of lens, optical scheme, condition of lens.
  7. Hi Freya. What kinds of Konvas you mean ? Konvas-1M or Konvas-2M ? The russian anamorphic lenses can have " NAS " and " BAS " type. NAS type consist from two parts, front anamorphic attachment and spherical prime lens ( two bodies ). BAS type have front anamorphic attachment and spherical prime lens at one body of lens. I think, you told about set of NAS anamorphic lenses of Konvas-1, 1M cameras. This is lenses use of special support.
  8. This show, the electronics of motor to take a speed 50 fps good. And. The transport pin can have different a final spot of move. Frankly speaking, i use my index finger for stup of upper and lower loops too. I think, the more inportant to make of procedure attaching of magazine. 1.You need check of size of lower loops. You not need open of lid of magazine. You need push on fixative pin on film track ( the film film move easy ). You move of film to upper side of film gate by to push of film at open part of film at film channel up to follow out of moving. The next, You to begin of move of film to reversal direction (lower side ) and to count of perforation. You must move of film on 4 perforation ( the other my colleagues told me about 5 perforation, i think, the 4 or 5 perforation not important too much ). After, you release of fixative pin and you move film on very short distance and must to catch a hit the pin on perforation of film. After this procedure, the size of lower loop to check and setup. But, i must underline, If the size of loops will setup wrongly at procedure of loading of film, and the upper loop will have too big size, the film can receive scratches from touch with parts of body of magazine. The next procedure, to attach of film magazine correct. Before to attach of film magazine with new film, you need set of transport pin on upper position. The film gate of camera have mark of upper position of transport pin and you need set of transport pin near this mark. This is very important, because, this is procedure synchronize of phase of start-stop moving of film at film gate and permanent moving of film on film magazine. After you set of transport pin on upper position, you can attach of film magazine. The magazine must load easy without jam and blow. The next, you need turn of axis of camera on a few turns by manual rotation of axis of motor on run of " Inch" mode at modified motor. This is procedure need for connect of transport pin with perforation of film, for connect of gear of body of camera with gear of film magazine. And, the all this steps give you a correct size of loops after run of camera. Because, if you not set of of transport pin on upper position before attaching of film magazine, the size of loops will change with a first turns of axis of mechanism of camera Richard open of very important idea about condition of film magazines of Konvas camera. Yes, The quality of footages depend from condition of film magazine too because of mechanism of film magazine connect with mechanism of camera. Konvas film magazine have dry friction clutch at takeup reel ( 200 ft and 400 ft magazine ) and condition of friction clutch to influence on stability of speed too. The friction clutch to equalization of permanent speed of mechanism and variable speed of takeup reel. The effort of clutch depend from effort of spring and condition of surfaces of parts. If the friction clutch will have dirt, oil, dust, the value of effort will have pulses style and total speed will pulses too. 200 ft magazine have low rate of transfer constant and condition of friction clutch have less value of influence. 400 ft magazine have more big diameters of roll of film ask of less rate of transfer constant ast of additional power from main motor and can have more influence. But, not need worry too much. Need service of film magazine and check and adjust of friction factor of friction clotch. If you open of lid of film magazine, the film rollers will jam and you must turn of take up reel without too big effort resistance. I wish underline, the resistance of rotation must be, but, not too much. And must be constant, without jerks. I use of special devices for adjust of breaking effort, but, you can use more easy technology. You can adjust of traction coefficient of take up reel by way of condition of roll of film after run through of camera. The used rolls of film must have not high density of winding, but, not must break up. Need choice of better ration between : - high density of winding, and high influence of film magazine on final speed of camera or - not high density of winding of roll and not high influence of film magazine on final speed of camera. I prefer of second choice. And not high density of winding of roll of film good for storage of film too. But, this is not full list of parts of camera, what influence of final quality of footages and need of check and service. About upgrade Konvas mechanism on in registration version, sorry, i can't propose of this service now. This is modification ask of special version of mechanism, I don't have special parts for modification. I hear, the registration pin modifictaion can make on Moskov and St-Petersburg, and i can help to searh of persons, who can do of this modification. From theoretical side, i wish underline. The modified Konvas will have one registration pin from other side from transport pin. The more high characteristics have mechanisms with two registration pins from two side and one or two transport pins. Any case, the claw mechanism with registration pin will have more high value of steadiness of footages.
  9. I think, i will need show of my answer, what i sent to Thomas on private letter. The Konvas registration test at 50 fps complex question, because, the stability of image depend from many factors. The first factor -design of claw mechanism of camera. Konvas claw mechanism create for normal speed of shooting 24 fps and have maximum speed of 32 fps. The manufacturer of Konvas to show of value of picture instability 0.02 mm at 24 fps and told about worsening at more high speeds. Konvas camera have claw mechanism with one registration pin and if we check of design of high speed cameras ( speeds up to 150 fps ), we can see, the fast speed cameras have 2.. 4 pin transport pins and 2..4 pin registration pins. Yes, Konvas can be use for shooting at 50 fps, but, the camera will ask of additional request of quality, adjust and service. The next factor - condition of mechanism of cameras. If you think to use of Konvas at 50 fps, the mechanism of cameras must have excellent condition. The gaps at parts of transport mechanism must have minimum value, the mechanism must have minimum noise. The block of shutter disk need re-balance at speed 50 fps. From practical side, the good balance of block of shutter disk on 24 fps can be insufficiently at 50 fps. The mechanism must be service and re-lube. The gears of mechanism must be clean, especially, gears between main axis and film magazine. The any dirt between of cogs of gear can give you instability of speed. I recommed to "heat up" of camera before of shooting at 50 fps and run of camera at 24..25 fps 20..30 sec without film magazine. You must draw of additional attention on condition of two small springs under of pressure plate of film magazine. Because, of effort of this spring to influence on stability of pictures on film. But, the effort of the springs not must be too high. The loops of film of film magazine must have correct size. Need check of every film magazine, because, the film magazine can lost of size of loops. The battery must be charged. The modified motors of 17EP-1414 have a soft acceleration of speed and ask of 18 v battery at 50 fps. But, A some cameras can ask of 24 v battery at 50 fps speed. Need check a "No-sync alarm" signal at 50 fps. The modified 17EP-1414 motor can work with 24 v battery too, because, to have a big power reserve. The output stage have limit 55 v 75A, diodes have Umax 100 v, capacitors have Umax 35 v. But, not need forget about main DC motor . The main DC motor DPR-72 have big power reserve ( nominal power 50W, peak power 210W ), but, this is DC motor for 12 v voltage. The main schemes and programms of new style crystal sync speed controllers ( series 1404, 1414, 1416, 1421) tested on a many type of cine cameras ( Konvas, Kinor-16, Kinor-35, Arri 2C, Arri 35-3, BL2, BL3,..) and have high value of stability of speed. And, If you to meet a all this claims, the footages will have high quality.
  10. At first, need service and adjust of K-3 camera. K-3 create for normal speed shooting at 24 fps and high speed shooting can lost a some value of quality of footage. Need check of main cog's wheel, additional film rolls and film channel. The first test, the camera lost of size of loops or not. the very important size of loops. The upper loop not must have too big size. But, I prefer of other idea - to switch over to Kinor-16 SX-2M. K-3 don't have registration pin - Kinor-16 have registration pin. K-3 don't have film side clamping on film channel, Kinor-16 have clamping plate from side and from rear side of film. Kinor-16 can use of 100 ft and 400 ft film magazines, have electrical motor and can be upgrade on crystal sync speed version, have a few zoom lenses, prime lenses, super wide angle ( 6 mm) prime lens and more.

The next generation of controllers have speed synthesizer 5-50 fps, step 0.01 fps. The next generation of controllers have multi speed synthesizers ( up to 36 pcs ) 5-50 fps, step 0.001 fps, with programming of speed changing, digital film counter, LED or LCD display. All this controllers can be install on other type of cameras with DC motor too.

But, if you wish have original style of film after processing, or wish experiment with technology of processing, you need hand made processing of film. A some comparison. The processing of film like of cooking. Yes, we can take of list of components, use of fixed technology, but, the every cooking have special secrets and dish will receive of unique taste. The technology of processing can be change, you can use of solutions with special formulas and the result will unique. You need " soft image" - to use of low contrast developers. You need " super high contrast " - to use high contrast developers. You need film with more high speed - change of time of processing. You can change of temperature of solutions and result will other. You can have many factors influence on final style of image on film. The home processing of film - additional possibilities for create of unique arts.
  14. A some time ago, the russian skilled craftsman upgraded of standard Super 8/ norma8 cine projector RUS on device for telecine. The projector had DC, variable speed motor ( original ), crystal sync speed controller ( new ) and take away of shutter disk and replace of bulb on low power light screen. RUS prodector have contacts and give of pulse of every frame and this pulses can be use for outside synchronization.
  15. I think, you need begin from value of budgert of shooting. You can rent of modern cine cameras ( Arri ) with LOMO, Elite Optics, Hawk other lenses. The many rent offices can propose of anamoprhic lenses. As for me, I have Konvas-2M , with anamorphic set of accessories, and set of LOMO anamorphic lenses 50. 75, 150 mm and fast zoom lens 40-120 mm.

You can processing of Super 8, D8, DS8, 16 mm/35 mm B&W negative, print, reversal films, color reversal film at home lab. about Color negative film, you will have problme with black jet layer, that's why, this film not compatible with home processing. And all this real. At first, i recommed you of visit of my site about home film processing http://www.geocities.com/cinetank I have long time experience at home film processing of cine films from 8 mm up to Kodak 35 mm 5285 and you can repeat of my experience. I recommend you to begin from processing of B&W negative, B&W reversal films, because, the B&W technology of processing have not high requirement of stability of temperature and time of processing of film at every step. I recommend to use of russian spiral processing tanks LOMO UPB-1, UPB-1A ( S8/16 x 35ft ). The other type of processing tanks ( rewind type similar of Morse tank ) show a not stable result. But, not need ask me about to sell of LOMO tanks, i don't have tanks for sell, LOMO tanks rare and switch of my business on service of professional cine cameras now. You will need glas lab ware for preparation of solutions, lab thermometer, stop-watch and other devices. About film dryers, i can give a some ideas. The processing of color reversal films possible too, but, need experience of processing of film and additional electronic devices - high power waterheater with digital temperature control +/- 0.1C. And you can commercialize a E-6 process.
  17. Yes, The possible to install of special adapter on standard lens mount of Kinor-16 camera and you will have Arri Pl lens mounted lens. For example. This is zoom lens 16 OPF-12-1 10-100 mm with Arri PL lens mount adapter. The lens can be monvert on original Kinor-16 lens mount for short time, will need tale away of adapter only. But, I not sure, OKS 6 mm lens cover Super 16 or not. The user manuala of 6 mm lens wrote about academy 16 size of film gate.

This is multi speed, crystal sync speed motor with digital film counter, digital voltmeter of battery. We can propose of versions of motor upgrade with Arri Vario speed input or similar, with speed synthesizer 5..50 fps, step 0.01 and multi-speed synthesizers with programming of change of speed, with 36 speeds 5..50 fps, steps 0.001 fps
  19. Yes, The 400ft film magazine of Kinor-16 SX-2M need taping too for additional protection. Kinor's mag have two locks, and clamping of lid good, but, if the backing plate mis-shapen or setup incorrectly, the lid of film magazine can close not closely.
  20. The russian film makers take from west colleagues to taped of film magazines now. The any additional protection of film stock not bad. From my experience of service, repair and use of film magazines of Konvas cameras, i can tell, a some 400 ft film magazines of Konvas cameras can have mix lids fron other film magazine or can have problem with clasping a lid on top side. I recommend to taped of 400 ft magazine for additional protection of stock. Kinor's magazines have better clamping of parts of magazine have a top and lower locks.
  21. I can build of crystal sync speed control unit for body of Kinor-35pII camera. About maintainability. I think, the reliability of all russian cine cameras and Kinor-35PII high and if you can run of camera, and will service of camera routinely, the camera will work long. Yes, Konvas more prevailing, well-known, more investigated. But, Kinor-35PII have more modern technical engineering achievement. Thta's why, I think, this is camera can draw attention.

  23. Not bad, but i have a few critical words. The scenes show interesting, have multi level of building, but, i not see of light building. I don't know of plan of light setting of every scene, but, i think, you need use of more lighters on foreground. The main actor ( actors ) must be underline by light. The background or parts on backgrounds have more high level of light and if you equalize of total density on main actors, you lost of details on background. I don't know, this is pictures from telecine after density correction or from other source. Other idea, not worry to mix of daylight with tungsten light. The day light on background and tungsten light on foreground will give you additional capacity of picture. Yes, of course, i don't know of main idea of movie. The important to use of back lighting, you will underline of profile of actors and draw attention of viewers of main subjects of scene. The light and shade - the important tolls for show of ideas of move. Need shoot of more and more and all will OK. P.S I love use of 320 T 7277, very good dynamic range of density.
  24. You lucky, if you can use of Nikon 300 mm F2,8 lens. I had Canon professinal zoom lens 70-200 F2,8 and was happy too much, that's why, i can imagine of quality of image from Nikon lens. You told, what you don't have a aperture control. I think, this is " Digital control " lens with apertire conrtol from camera. I think about apertre control of photo lenses a some time ago and can recommed to take any low cost Nikon camera with digital aperture control. Take of lens mount from this camera and use of this device for build of adapter for Kranosghorsk camera. After, You can install of additonal wires between photo camera and contacts of Nikon lens mount of Kranosgorsk adapter and you can control of aperture position by photo camera. Theoretically - aperture control work similar of stepper motor and must be control by pulses. But, i don't have any information about this. Will be good idea to study of Nikon lens control more detailed for use of Nikon lenses with electronic apertire control with 16 mmand 35 mm cine cameras. You can imagine of qulaity of picture, if you will use of Nikon professional lenses with 35 mm cine cameras. This must be fantastic quality. About dolly system. Yes, your system show simply. But, after my experience to create, to build and to use of dolly systems, i understand, the dolly must have big weight. Because, the big weight of dolly can give me high stability. The other, alternative idea, to use small dolly for camera only ( without cameraman ). But, the position of camera from dolly must be not high, and will need lift of tracks by hard tripods. Plastic tripods show good, but, i prefer of aluminium tubers with heavy wheels ( big inertia of rotation ). Any case, i welcome of any experimens and will be glad to know opinion of other filmmakers. I think, after you shooted a some footages with Kransogrosk-3 cameras you will think about lenses with more wide angle of view. And i can tell about use of Krasnogorsk-3 with bayonet mount and prime lenses 12.5 mm, 20 mm, 50 mm from set of lenses of Krasnogorsk-1 camera and 10 mm, 15 mm lenses from 16SP camera. The next step of uprating of equipments for film shooting can be Kinor-16 SX-2M camera with crystal sync speed motor, 400 ft film magazines and zoom lenses 7.5-75 mm, 10-100 mm, 12-120 mm, and prime lenses from 6 mm up to 300 mm.
  25. Yes, This show great. But, i wish tell you a some my ideas from my personal experience to use of super tele lenses. At first a worry about your suppor. You fix of lens and not fix of camera. This is not good ,because, the any gap at part of camera mount can move of optical axis of lens and youcan have a some smeared picture. Kransogrosk-3 have 4 small screws M3 for screwing of lens mount and body of camera. I recommend you to build special hard support for fix of body of camera and support of lens on one big plate and after on tripod. Other idea, The size of picture of Nikon lens 24x 36 mm and many parts of this image can give you bad optical flare s. That's why, will be good, if you set of any mask with size of image of 16 mm cine camera between lens and camera. This mask can be like lens hood or thin mask. Yes,of course, I can't compare of Nikon 300 mm F2.8 professional lens with other lenses, because, i can imagine of quality of image. But, for information: The russian tele lens Tair-3 300 mm lens from photo sniper Zenit give a good result . This is lens have M42 screw mount and instant-return diaphragm. You set of need value of aperture, press on lever and aperture will jamp to setup value. Tair-3 have classic optical scheme with aperture control. The next series of russian tele lenses 500 mm, 1000 mm have " mirror " optical scheme ( optical scheme of Maksutov) and don't have aperture control. If you like of super tele lenses, i can recommed to use of super tele lenses from medium format photo cameras too. This can be russian Jupiter-36 250 mm, Carl Zeiss Sonnar 300 mm, 600 mm with Pentacon Six lens mount. The lenses with Pentacon Six lens mount can be use with 2x teleconverter. But, not will need forger about difference between a size of images 60 x 60 mm and 7.45 x 10.1 mm and will need set of mask. Any case, i wish underline again, this is very interested version of use of Krasnorgosk-3 camera
