  1. why are they even pitted against each other or even in the same film.. pretty desperate scripting I think..
  2. Yes TBH Im not really down on the comic book stuff.. but there have been a few duff ones.. and sure if your CEO you have to make money for the company.. but Batman V,s Superman.. ? thats clutching at straws now..
  3. Hey Ari I was loading mags probably before you were born.. I assisted an oscar nominated BSC dp for 6 years.. Ive loaded more mags than you had hot dinners.. and Ive had friends in this industry who have died.. Im not sure what you have been working on.. but I feel that data wranglers on big films are very organized and there is as much skill in it as loading mags.. Show some respect you say..?
  4. Sure Im not arguing that film is crap and old fashioned and digital is the only future blah blah.. probably most of the films I like have been shot on film too.. my point was that if you go to see a movie thats shot on digital .. by a competent DP.. if that movie is no good for you because it doesn't look as good as film.. then the movie itself must be crap.. if its a good film you will be taken in for the ride regardless of what its shot on..and that good scripts, and acting is way more important.. and yes I think its going the wrong way with endless tent pole, huge budget remakes and rubbish.. whats up next Batman against Lois Lane .. or Predator V,s Aliens 7.. its dross.. and other "risker " films are not being made .. and Im always right..
  5. "and you're not one of those snobby "oh no, ugh, comic book superhero films are killing this industry," I was replying to Manu accusing me of being a snob.. for not liking comic book films.. always good to read the posts well ..
  6. " I triple dare you to compare say (I did that) a film like The Place Beyond The Pines shot on 2 perf (so smaller negative, but still very good, and thicker grain) to digital, even if adding grain to digital and saying it looks virtually indistinguishable (especially using screengrabs). The nature of film itself, ie it being random in the way it behaves and being an actual chemical reaction means that digital will never" You really think people can tell the difference .. they cant .. they are just going to see a movie.. with a good story and well made.. it doesnt matter them at all if its shot on film or Alexa.. who is the snobbish one here.. .. what is your point if you have one.. film is the only way or digital is ok too.. earlier you say you "hated " false grain .. hate is a strong word seems you have a strong opinion..you even triple dared people to question it.. these are strong terms.. then you say digital is fine and there are tons of films you like shot digitally.. whats it to be .. or keep your worries to yourself... seems Roger Deakins is not losing sleep over it.. but what does he know..
  7. But its all immaterial .. if you are more concerned about the grain/look of a film being film or digital .. in this day and age.. were even Roger Deakins cant tell.. and that is spoiling the film for you.. its a crap film.. and yes 99.9% of the audience will not know the difference.. but they will know if a film is crap or not.. due to the script and or acting..not pixel peeping.. thats it really.. There is so much else to be worried about re the state of modern cinema.. eg endless remakes.. endless comic book films .. the death of mid/low budget films .. 250 million dollar films that are absolute and total crap.. even if they are shot on 70mm gold plated camera,s..
  8. Brian .. that was exactly my case.. I had 2/3 and s35 camera,s.. but rather quickly the work that had been 2/3 all went s35.. and i had buy the Canon CN7 cine zoom to keep working as I had, but in s35.. with an idea that sale of the fujinon would help ease the pain.. but could only sell it for a fraction of the cost .. only just 4 yrs old and in very good nick..! no buyer at all.. had to sell it to a dealer .. I also sold the ENG camera PMW500.. and even that was hard to sell also.. only 2 yrs old.. low hours.. I think its only news and sports shot in 2/3 now TBH..
  9. It was HD.. Fujinon HA14 X 4.5 BERM HD.. it was really hard to sell.. in the UK or Japan.. no one was more surprised than me !
  10. It was just for Americans I believe .. often happens in the UK..
  11. Well no wonder did didnt finish it.. spending all his time on the post software and hanging out in Renaissance hotels.. ! maybe with a young Bill Gates I would wager.. who is this Des Cartes guy..
  12. According to Sony and Panavsion is was F55 ,supplied by panavision with Primo lenses.. there is also an article is Sony CineAlta magazine issue 4 with the DP about how they tried alot of formats from the original super 16mm the dp wanted to use .. he says that it was Scorsese who picked the F55 look Slog3.cine and "Live Grain" .. for the pilot anyway..
  13. I cant wait to see the finished art work.. the same guy would makes the post software right.. this guy knows his stuff..
  14. "photons drape themselves over tiny pieces of "silver" ".. yes all very poetic and we should bake our own bread, collect berries and wear clogs.. :) But seriously,in the early days of digital ,yes it was very obvious the differences and film was clearly "nicer" and had a better DR etc.. but those days are over.. Im not a young hipster with a RED and a check shirt.. I shot film on Aatons and SR,s.. but I,d rather shoot LOG, 24p onto an SxS card these days.. even with a USER LUT burnt in,you can get a look as good as film or better.. I would go with the robotic wife for sure.. it can be unplugged right ?
  15. I dont think many people buy there own C stands.. maybe one for a Kino or a mic stand.. they are really heavy (yes I know thats the point).. and rarely used on anything other than shoots that have a fair amount of lights and so a call for them.. they are all rental,s and last for ever.. not really the sort of item thats going to be sold second hand individually ..
  16. But if it looks good.. and even people on this forum thought it was film.. what doe it matter if its film or an F55.. why is it a shame.. ?
  17. It was the flagship camera for many years in TV.. and then the F900R .. used for a short period of time is pushing it a bit !.. the first 24p video camera.. the F900 is really heavy without a lens or battery.. the 900R was a bit smaller and lighter.. But I think your better off with a s35mm size sensor these days for narrative work Second hand ENG zooms are pretty cheap now.. I had a very expensive Fujinon 4.5 wide angle zoom that I could barely give away .. !
  18. Thanks Dom.. its been interesting reading your comments.. learnt a few things ..
  19. Look Im sorry.. but just this one photo means nothing.. it could very easily be a fake .. or a D stand making out to be a C.. I have to agree with Gregg here... you are only interested in the shiny stands.. without any thoughts for the those old and stained ones left discarded in garden sheds the length and breadth of our great Island.. Rise up old C stands.. take your rightful place in lighting trucks through out the land.. never have so few stands, worked on so few sets.. with such scant disregard.. Rise up I say.. with Pinewood,Elstree, and Ealing reflected in your lustrous chrome plate..
  20. Yes there is a famous story he was filming in Germany ,just before WW2, with some huge old camera that made some big sudden noise .. Goebbels stopped speaking and a few hundred brown shirted thugs turned round giving him the evil eye .. I think he later described it as "a very uncomfortable moment".. it was his pre war footage.. and the actual attack of Poland ,that got him a job at Ealing Studios.. Yes I guess a few of those guys could pretty much throw their meters away .. :)
  21. Yeah .. he even filmed speeches by Goebbels before WW2.. ! and in his 70,s when he shot Indianan Jones ..
  22. Japan is also weird in that the TV system nation wide is NTSC based.. but the country it divided into two different frequencies .. 50Hz and 60Hz.. there is a river which is the border just south of Tokyo !
  23. Yes the Zacuto universal base plate can be set for VCT.. thats how i have it.. I thinks its not usually the camera plate thats the problem.. but the actual VCT quick release plate on the tripod..most are spring loaded which will always become loose over time.. So I bought the Chrosziel VCT quick release.. between tripod and camera plate..over a $1,000 .. but all mechanical .. solid as a rock.. the back round lock actually moves down when you close the release lever.. no movement at all.. this think will last longer than me !
  24. The un sung hero,s.. only a few people will ever know how hard a focus pull as been.. !
