I see them pop up on ebay now and then. 2 sellers have them right now -
"Mother Of George" - A " How is this scene lit" Post
JB Earl replied to Albion Hockney's topic in Lighting for Film & Video
just a guess, but considering the shallow DOF (wide aperture) the practicals could be responsible-however is see reflections of a 4x4 or something like that in the glasses. The top light is really the key light though, and I don't see much spill from it in the room. Maybe a kino 4' with a grid? maybe Mr. Mullen could "shed some light" on this? -
Interstellar and the future of film projection

Glenn, I actually did talk to the manager. He told me that IMAX monitors everything they do to the projection, and that they did try to turn the volume down once due to complaints. He said they got flak from IMAX on it. That's also something new with digital projection. A related thing: I talked with a projectionist at a drive-in who said something similar, that the studio could tell exactly when they showed a film. -
Interstellar and the future of film projection

I saw it on Imax digital (Liemax?). I'm not a fan of digital projection, but the most striking thing I took away was the incredibly high audio volume. It was actually painful. Any ideas about this? -
I got 2x2 85 and 85n3 on ebay. Now the problem is I'm thinking about a zoom, which probably won't work with this matte box. Gregg, is that nd marked 25% transmission? or ?
-
I think I can get the trays. I can't find any used 2x2 filters, and new ones are hard to justify as this is not my work camera (it's just for personal use).
-
I have an original matte box for my Arriflex 16SB. I'm wondering what others use in terms of filters for theirs. I can't seam to locate the 60mm x 75mm filters it was designed for. 2x2 for use with filter frames are also very rare. 58mm filters screw in it, they're cheap and available but would definitely need some black wrap. Advice? thanks!

That's great, Thanks Much!

The camera's finder is fixed straight out the back. Arri made a periscope finder attachment that the say is for left eye viewing with 400' mags. It appears to be rotatable also but I can't be sure as I've never handled one.
-
I'd like to know if the periscope finder ( specifically on the 16 st) is rotatable to higher and lower viewing positions. I've looked all over the web and can't find any detailed info other than extending for left eye viewing. Thanks

Where can you buy carbon arcs?
JB Earl replied to Benjamin Huddleston's topic in Lighting for Film & Video
Please keep us posted on this. I've always been curious about them. -
I think the best solution for those on a budget is used stage or tv studio lights. There are plenty of Altman, Colortran and the like fresnels on the used market. They are very well made and much cheaper than Arri lights.
-
that's cool. Too bad I sold all my Hassy lenses a few years ago.
-
thanks for the info. The t mount is an interesting idea. I remember there were lots of lenses back in the day, but their performance is probably not very good. I think tamron made t mount. I was actually hoping some of the russian lenses would work so I'll look further into that.

sorry for the confusion. I have an Arriflex 16SB which takes either Arri standard or bayonet lenses. I'm wondering if there are other lenses that can easily be adapted to it. All the adapters I've noticed fit arri mount lens to other cameras. I'm looking for other lenses to the arri body. obviously the lenses would have to be longer FFD than 52mm (IIRC)
-
Are there any lenses available to fit through adapters for arri standard or bayonet mount, other than the usual cine xenon kinetal etc? I understand flange focal distance etc and have searched for adapters but can't find this sort of thing.

I love my fresnels, but the open face lights get used just as often through 4x4 diff, and bounce. Get at least the DP in addition to the fresnels.

I'm looking for a decent quality but inexpensive (!?) transfer of about 2500 feet of 16mm. It's old Sunday School Picnic footage for a church anniversary, so I'm trying to help out. I've gotten some prices of around $1000, but they can't spend that much. I'd appreciate any suggestions, thanks

Most light instrument beams are brightest in the middle, and reduce intensity toward the edge. If you point the center of the beam towards 10, the less intense edges will illuminate the closer points respectivly (98765...) You will have to play with the focus or type of reflector to get this to work, and it won't be perfect. Also, raising the height of the lighting instrument will help with this. Of course, you can also use multiple or graduated scrims.

shooting "Day for Night" or shooting at night?
JB Earl replied to Lee Tamer's topic in Lighting for Film & Video
Guy, thanks for those great BTS detail photos. -
Thanks for the advice. The lights I only meant to use under the tenting, I won't have to worry about the daylight otherwise. I've only done this thing on a small scale so I'm not sure how far away from the action at the door I need to keep the solids. I'd love to see an example of this somewhere, then I could see what I could actually get away with.

I'm planning a tv spot for a sports bar/restaurant. The first shot is the marquis at dusk. the second shot is interior looking towards the front doors where people are entering. I think it needs to be day for night, (we're shooting in the a.m. before opening) but I don't have a lot to handle that. The sidewalk has a roof over it. I can rig a 12x12 solid 6 feet outside the doors, or will I need yards of duvetyne? Should I use a light or 2 gelled to mimic urban night outside, or just let it dark to not draw attention? I can't find too many examples of something like this for inspiration. Thanks for any suggestions

There are also MINI apple boxes in full, 1/2, 1/4. They're a little more than half the size of regular ones.
