  1. Anyone caught Vinyl on HBO yet? Looks like it was shot on 35, but in this day and age who knows. Really awesome use of color and texture, quite enjoying the cinematography.
  2. Quite a few Ziess 10-100 zooms floating around in the world for very cheap in their original bayonet mounts.
  3. The reason I personally prefer 24 and why I think a lot of people associate it so well with film and story telling is that it is not quite real, it helps the mind to disconnect from the reality right around us and enter a state of suspension of disbelief. In this way we are able to invest into the story and the characters and experience the journey with them. Once we crank up the speed and things start to look more "real" and smooth it gets harder and harder to suspend disbelief because what we are looking at is super sharp and real and what would seem like a magical castle at 24fps now looks like set made of foam and paint at 48fps. It is similar to the uncanny valley principle.
  4. Finally got the lens and all the various parts together. As mentioned earlier the image circle doesn't cover the super16 sensor till about 35mm. The Optima 1.4x gives me good coverage at the widest (14mm with the adapter), looks sharp and loving the color. I will record some tests once I get back home and can set it all up. You can see in the pictures I removed the rear plastic cover which allows it to co-exist with the 1.4x. https://goo.gl/photos/rfVTyYzTiB5UDHqd7 https://goo.gl/photos/WpEr4CxP6FR395AS8 I also realize my PL adapter is on upside down, or wrather the lens is currently mounted upside down. Will fix that when I get home.
  5. Oh I am 100% a mouse guy, in every sense, but when it comes to very subtle adjustments of color and levels in DR the trackball is really nice, it just intuitively makes sense when dealing with the primaries for color correction etc. Hence the additional surface which is another tool in conjunction with the mouse.
  6. I love resolve 12, infact I work exclusively in it except for special effects round trips to fusion or after effects. I have been editing and grading in it and its fantastic working in the same package. I'm going to pick up the new Tangent soon as it comes out, will make grading a real pleasure not having to use a mouse to fidget with the UI for the most common tasks.
  7. If you want your lights to be even white yes. Color temperature settings can also be used to effect your lights effective color in the final shot. I have often mixed tungsten and LED and balanced somewhere in the middle to get warm and cool contrast. Of course shooting raw I can push it in any direction in the grade but you get the idea. Often you have to deal with other lights in a scene, like florescents, in which case you would want to use color correction gels on your lights to match the florescent color temperature for consistent white, and balance for that in camera.
  8. There are some monitors and view finders that will do the desqueeze with a passthrough so everything down stream of it will then be de-squeezed. I think the new Zacuto eyepiece does that. But the majority of monitors I use will do the desqueeze very easily. Pretty much any SmallHD will handle it. I use the AC-7 which is affordable. And the Ikan 17" field monitor will do it as well and its pretty affordable.
  9. Cant edit but... EDIT: This is probably a stupid idea, but would I be insane looking at MFT Extenders? Assuming they clear the elements in the PL mount that might be another option that is a lot less expensive than some of the PL based 1.4x converters.
  10. Quick question since I think I've been thinking about this totally wrong. I keep thinking I have to use a mutar that is Arri Bayonet, but I could just as easily apply the PL Adapter to the lens then use a PL mutar could I not? In which case might open up my options right? And then im also PL->PL and not intermediate bayonet which is not as secure as PL. Please correct me if Im totally off on my thinking here.
  11. Possible Yes. I dont think the C300 has an option for 2x anamorphic as far as resolution but you could should 1.3x with 16x9 to get 2.4:1. Unfortunately unless you have a PL mount you would be stuck with using adapters on the end of the lens, there are a lot of really good write ups about doing this. If you have PL I think there are a couple options for renting 1.3x Anamorphic Primes.
  12. I'm still waiting for the Lens to arrive but with all the great feed back and discussion here I look forward to really testing the Lens and shooting some charts for comparison.
  13. Certainly I did not expect this lens to be as crisp as a modern lens and that is one of the reasons I'm getting it. I have a full set of Rokinon primes but I want a zoom that's not as harsh but still resolves well. And that I can afford till a Cooke 20-100 falls in my lap.
  14. Interesting. Well I have the Lens + PL Adapter and PL-MTF Adapter shipping to me now so well see what kind of shape everything is in. If I can get my hands on a cheap 2x or otherwise mutar ill grab it to try and do some empirical tests.
  15. Looks awesome. Love the macro tests. What apature were you at for the outdoor stuff?
  16. These look like gimbal shots and a - 18-35mm lens depending on the camera. For my personal taste I find the constant in and out motion nauseating
  17. Sadly I don't have time to collaborate right now I did want to say the trailer looked great and it seems like a fun project.
  18. I had a really awesome moment tonight when I got to see some scenes I shot projected on to a 30 foot screen. I first of all was really happy how the 1080 footage from my bmpcc held up but it was kind of magical to experience it like that. World of difference from the 26 inch screen I edited on. I'm curious if other have had moments that made them stop and smile on projects.
  19. David I just want to express how gorgeous this work is. In my line of work for theatre I'm often challenged to recreate old looks and styles buy you just nailed this. Thanks so much for sharing. This will be a great reference.
  20. I am curious about the bare miinimum mutar. I think I saw at one point there is a 1.4x Would that get me 14mm on the S16 sensor or would it still be to small? Also just curious if there is a version of the mutar that converts from arri b mount to PL or I would still want to attach a PL adapter to the mutar. Thanks for the added perspective and information Dom.
  21. That is what I suspected. Thank you for the information Tyler. I will see how the lens works once everything arrives and go from there. Looking forward to doing an indepth review of it in conjunction with a bmpcc.
  22. I was under the impression the 2x extender would introduce a notiable loss in sharpness clarity since its effectivly zooming in on a smaller portion of the lens. As for the loss of the wide angle, thats not a complete loss since were already stuck above 20-25mm without the S16 conversion. If the 2X is usable without things getting fuzzy or funky that would certainly be an interesting option.
