Your "path" to becoming a Cinematographer
Daniel D. Teoli Jr. replied to Joseph Tese's topic in Cinematographers
I'd say go the direct route. Train in cinematography. But if you already have an in as a gaffer well you got a foot in the door, go from there. I don't work in the biz. I do underground and experimental work. So there are no rules...only question is...is it legal. -

Or does it not matter if film or digital was used for making it? I ask for my own interest. When I solicit institutions to place my films should I be calling them videos and not films if they are all digital camerawork? But nowadays most film is digitized for online or digital projection. So should there be any name differentiation between the two methods? 100% digital cinematographers are called filmmakers, so I'd say calling a video a film is OK. Thanks

What software makes auto play / high res DVDs?
Daniel D. Teoli Jr. replied to Daniel D. Teoli Jr.'s topic in Post Production
Thanks. I like DVD's. They are a step closer to film than a HDD can offer. (Not in film look, but with archival ability.) -
I made a 6+ hour film ('Offshoots') that was too big to deal with. I decided to speed it up to greatly reduce playtime and was looking for the sweet spot. Here is a test film ('Time Studies') I made to see the range of playback speeds that I could use. 'Time Studies' covers regular speed up to 1000% faster in increments of 100%. The test sample I used was pulled from 'Disciples of Androgyne' which is part 6 of 'Genderqueer'...a 65min film I made on the gender busting revolution. ( I will distribute 'Genderqueer' in a fast speed option as well as normal speed.) These films are made under the auspices of 'fair use' for non-commercial, educational, editorial and historical purposes.

What software makes auto play / high res DVDs?
Daniel D. Teoli Jr. replied to Daniel D. Teoli Jr.'s topic in Post Production
Thanks Tyler, all I have is Windows. Anything you can recommend for Blu-ray burning software for a PC? If auto play is going to be a hassle, it is not that big a deal. I thought it would be a nice touch to add instead of the viewer having to push buttons to play. I got a Blu-ray burner now just need some software. -

I am using Movavi software. It makes DVD's that are playable in a TV but not as auto play. When I input 1280x720 it gives me a max DVD option of 720x480. What software do I need that makes auto play DVDs and makes them higher res? Thanks -

This is clip from 'Genderqueer ' - a 60 min social documentary experimental film I made from Instagram on the gender busting revolution. The film has 6 sections: 'Drag Queens' 'Transvestites, Crossdressers & Femboys' 'Transition' (MTF) 'Transmen' (FTM) 'Lesbians' 'Disciples of Androgyne' Back in the day I didn’t know any better, so I lumped drag queens, transvestites and transgender devotees all into one pile. I think every gender bender, whatever their end goal is, started out as a cross dresser to get a taste of being a woman. As I did some homework on the subject I could see that a 'T gal' is very different from your garden variety transvestite / drag queen / cross dresser. A true T gal has put in a lot of time, money and energy transitioning in various degrees from male to female. She grows plump breasts and womanly nipples from taking HRT and sometimes supplements them with breast implants. She loses muscles, develops hips and soft, hairless skin. Her voice may change and some have painful surgery for cosmetic reasons and to remove the penis and replace it with a vagina. Gender bending all starts with a little pill nowadays. Or for 'female to male' it is injections. Here is a list of areas the transwoman works on: Self-esteem / Self-acceptance Coming out Social adaption Hair removal Voice training Socialization as female Hormone therapy Hair removal Wardrobe replacement Future employment prospects Sex Reassignment Surgery Legal / Name change / Gender marker change Whereas, the only work the transvestite / drag queen / cross dresser does is to put on some women’s clothes, false breasts, hip pads and makeup. For female to male it is the opposite of what the transwoman does in some cases. Now, I'm no expert on all this, but this is my take on the gender benders of 2019.

Dune by Villeneuve 2020
Daniel D. Teoli Jr. replied to Bas Jan Ader Endimione's topic in In Production / Behind the Scenes
Never heard of him (but that means nothing) I read the name a few hours ago here... https://stories.phaseone.com/wonderfully-eccentric-world-of-pol-kurucz/ Now I read it from you. So I ordered one of his DVD's from the library. Also a DVD from this guy... Roy Andersson. Hopefully they are not too boring for my ADD. In any case, just a little gas $$ to pick em up, so not big loss. I can get a vast amount of free DVD's interlibrary loan. -
Hairy Women (SV)
Daniel D. Teoli Jr. replied to Daniel D. Teoli Jr.'s topic in In Production / Behind the Scenes
. Thanks. You got to view it in higher res. You can really see the hair. Vimeo 'Auto' is pretty fuzzy. YT is better, but they will take it down and ban me for a few weeks if I put it up. I like the girls with a little blonde peach fuzz. I guess they bleach it or maybe if lucky it is naturally blond. I've been trying to upload the full version to Internet Archive for the last few days. Every time I do it jams and lose the upload. I've got a smidgeon better than dial up internet. It takes 10 + hours to upload 1 gb. I've been doing one on tattooed lesbians. I've had to reshoot it 2-1/2times. Problems with my internet in the midst of shooting or the tablet was slightly off kilter. I got it about 85% done. Hopefully tonight will finish it. I can only shoot at night. No darkroom for shooting. I like it black around the tablet. -
Unless I have overlooked something, cotton gloves should be OK, but not for splicing. I don't use gloves myself. If it is important archival material you should not project it much.

'Hairy Women' (Short Version) is part of the 6 hour social documentary of Instagram I made called 'Offshoots' It is a study of my tablet's screen of posts made to Instagram on the subject of women that do not remove body hair. Also a transman or two that want to grow hair. (See the one with the big hairy boobies.) 6 hours is too long for any of my online accounts, so I broke it down into the following short subject films. 'Girls of Instagram' 'Look at #metoo' (aka'Look at Hashtag metoo' on the Internet Archive) 'Look at #metoo' (Short Version) 'Stretch Marks' 'Stretch Marks' (Short Version) 'Acne' 'Acne' (Short Version) 'Jew Majesty' 'Pregnant Girls of Instagram' 'Fat Ass' '#Queer' (aka 'Hashtag Queer' on the Internet Archive) 'Chubblebath' 'Mandy Blanco Dream Girl' (Prelim) 'Mandy Blanco Dream Girl' 'Transition' 'Transmen' 'Transmen' (Short Version) 'Colored Hair' 'Fingernails' 'Tongue Fetish' 'Split Tongue' 'Split Tongue' (Short Version) 'Scarification' 'Scarification' (Short Version) 'Drag Queens' 'Twerking' 'Tattooed Lesbians' 'Justin Day' 'Hairy Women' 'Afra' 'Afra'(Short Version) 'Growing Horns' 'Growing Horns' (Short Version) The hi-res version of the full length 'Hairy Women' will be on the Internet Archive.

Measuring stops
Daniel D. Teoli Jr. replied to Justin Oakley's topic in Students, New Filmmakers, Film Schools and Programs
Hopefully you can send in some finished work with the pocket 4K. I'd like to buy one too. I don't use / have a light meter. Just do test shots with digital and go with that. But it if for doc work, on the fly. In film era, I used a light meter. -
Is it really cheaper to shoot in digital ?
Daniel D. Teoli Jr. replied to panagiotis agapitou's topic in General Discussion
I'd disagree, sort of. I see many film devotes, at least in still photography, that do shitty work just to say they shoot film. They don't end up with great technical images. Film does not do everything as good as digital does and vice versa. If the budget allows, the best thing to do is to be true to the subject matter and pick the best medium that does justice to the project whether it be film or digital. We had this same debate on and on in photo forums whether to shoot BW or color. If both are equally good, flip a coin. And if not, pick what serves best. -
