Well April fools day has been and gone we've had red nose day in the UK and now we have a red camera thats never been seen has a website that doesnt download any of its footage. The only thing I didnt test was the shopping cart as the old adage a fool and his money are son parted sprang to mind even if it were a hoax I aint risking it. My guess is this camera is on a par with all other wannabe film cameras which is try as they might they aint film cameras.

It just seems like everything else that is digital, whether it's editing or sound recording/mixing. It can be a great tool, but it's accessibility opens the door to a lack of craft, a drop in standards and know-nothings taking over as "professionals."

Just to be clear. You can't hold the camera accountable for the actions of dilettantes. However, I can see where this response is coming from. But it's two separate arguments. I'd like to hear more about the camera's performance and less about its perceived social impact.

so, do you think jim jannard is behind this hoax or is it rather peter jackson, pulling of a very clever marketing stunt for his next movie?

I wouldnt like to say except only that its a hoax and annoying because it wastes quality time that could be spent looking at real film cameras. If it is an advertising gimmick then I imagine the product/film will be just as much a fraud and worth avoiding.

i see. say, and how does fit steve jobs @ apple into all this - at least he pretends to have redcode working in its timeline? Maybe they have blackmailed him: "Steve, if you don´t comply, peter jackson will never distribute via buena vista and itunes!"

hmmm. i recommend you grab a soapbox, and warn all the poor souls in front of the red booth in las vegas, that waiting 90 minutes to see peter jacksons newest shortfilm is fraud and worth being avoided.

The most funny thing about your statement is that you really don't seem to be kidding. You really sound serious! Wow! Are you really serious? I can't believe it... Anyway, I hope you don't mind if I bookmark this quote of yours!

"could someone please lock this childish and pointless thread?"

It's sort of like a train wreck. Isn't it? You just can't look away.

That sums it pretty much...

Plus you don't have to wait in line for 90 minutes... just walk over to Apple and you can see bits and pieces there...

But back to my first comment... its become a dog and pony show...

Mark,

Not sure if your post is a hoax but I'll take your bait anyway.

Let me reassure you the film does exsist. I was present during the shooting Peter Jacksons short film using the RED, and I witnessed the footage being down loaded on to Mac book.

Hi Fellow DP's

Ceasefire! Enough with the mud slinging at Red. At NAB they showed several working cameras, some nice accessories well thought out (and cinematographer friendly) software and a demo film that looked very good. Not a hoax, not mass hypnosis.

In the next weeks there will be less exuberant and more scientific tests and we can start to see the finer points of how the camera shoots.

It's just a tool, and I think it will prove to be a usefull one. If you don't like using it or the way the images look don't use it. Hating it while knowing nothing about it makes you irrelevant.

You say its a tool well It may or may not be but why hide? Why not show some footage? after all this time surely a clip would be available but NOTHING. dONT LIKE USING IT? It cant be used its non existant in a usable form? Hate it? WHY dont we know nothing about its ability then? Just like father xmas or another red one satan himself this is more than a hoax. Its joke has run its course. Its now infringing. its like a virus. ITS SPAM. And a complete waste of time perhaps even sueable. Although I guess this post is stirring up the desired effect from someones upcoming new film and I am being used against my will here to promote the popularity of the big red one this in itself is a misuse of the advertising laws.

Hmmm... What are thousands of people queueing for at NAB if it wasn't for a short movie shot by Peter Jackson himself with two alpha prototypes of REDs? If this was a "joke", as you claim it is, why would all the specialised press fall for it? And why would Apple fall for that joke? And all those famous cinematographers and directors? Are you telling this is all part of a huge conspiracy to rip a few thousands people off? I think you forgot to take your medication

BTW, unless you live under a rock, you should know that clips have been available for more than 9 months! I have seen the first pictures shot with Red at last IBC, in sept 2006! Since then, several other clips have been available. Go check Red's webiste if you don't believe me... :)

So suddenly the opinion's of people on this board are important!

Stephen, we will see thousands of veteran cinematographers using and buying the red.

The 5 or 10 people on this board, who where die-hard red critics or basher are less than a footnote now, anyhow.

BTW: i certainly hadn´t the impression that the people on this board had ONE opinion.

Hi

I am finally posting after being a long-time lurker. I just wanted to say that I was on the fence regarding the Red camera. Thanks to the comments from some of you I am finally going to buy this camera. The quotes that finally changed my mind:

"I would describe the look as something like 5245 50D 35mm scanned at 4K -- sharp & clean"

-- David Mullen, ASC

"I didn't see any compromise in image resolution compared to 35mm"

-- David Mullen, ASC

"I think [Red's] success is going to shake-up the long-held domination of corporations like Sony and Panasonic"

-- David Mullen, ASC

For 25,000 bucks one would be insane not to use this for a modest, quality feature. I think this is going to definitelly change things in the industry.
