Stef Kwinten
Hi everybody, I picked up an 400ft 16mm Stock of Kodak Vision2 500T/7218. The stock has an date from 2002, so that makes it 15 years old. It was stored in an fridge, but not at a minus celcius degree. Is the stock still worth using, or is it going to be ruined and not worth the time and money of developing and renting a camera? The stock was super cheap so thought it was worth a try. Thanks! Premium Member Simon Wyss Posted September 21, 2017 Premium Member Share Posted September 21, 2017 Why in the world does everybody stick to old film stock? To me it’s like trying to cook with shrivelled potatoes and mouldy garlic. Fresh film!
Premium Member Tyler Purcell Posted September 21, 2017 Premium Member Share Posted September 21, 2017 It probably won't be too bad for fun/practice shooting, but for a serious project, it will be pretty noisy and may have a layer of fog.

And I'd rather compare it to old cognac :) May have elevated base fog, lowered contrast and (very) slight color disbalance, but I'd take an expired roll of S16 Vivid 160T over any model Alexa any day. For 16 no... but for 35... maybe. We're experimenting with a roll we got from china that's newly made. :D
Michael Rodin
It was a sharp stock so held up on big screen in S16... quite grainy in small gauge but grain still bothers me less than color in video. What's that Chinese film - ECN2 or B&W?
Stef Kwinten
Thanks everyone, we decided to go with some fresh film stock, and use the old stock as a dummy.
Premium Member Aapo Lettinen Posted September 27, 2017 Premium Member Share Posted September 27, 2017 old grainy and foggy color shifted stocks may be good for flashback or dream sequences, no need to throw them away ;)
Samuel Berger
Coincidentally I just found 6 rolls of Plus-X. I'll use one to test my new K3. I thought about this thread when I ran into it. ;-)
