  1. https://vimeo.com/53002171 Don't think age of film is an issue. This Fuji 64D test is using really old stock 5-6 years, I think. My guess is the transfer...I have had some issues with old film and color shifting but not like that, looks like a balance issue
  2. Never used Pro8mm...no real reason. I use Cinelab and haven't looked back. Price isn't an issue as much as quality and service although I don't think Cinelab is on the expensive side of things in any case.
  3. I've had no issues with the N74 on my XTR. Is that the same perf dementions? Was I just lucky?
  4. If it's to test then Ebay is fine. If you care about the project buy fresh stock...it will be worth it Also, ORWO is cheeper for B/W than Kodak.
  5. Don't even know if this was ever made for the XTR but if there are any of you who dohave this and would like to get rid of it please let me know.
  6. Looks amazing Kate. Thank you for posting your tests. Very inspirational.
  7. Hi Nicholas, I did give him credit at the end and in my text description of the video. I'm an electronic musician myself and it would be the height of my career to work with Mr Artemyev. He is a genius and that is one of the best scores ever. I sometimes let the DVD menu run just to have the music in my house. It's kind of a chicken and egg thing...I would not know about Eduard if not for Andrea. That's why I titled the piece the way I did.
  8. http://vimeo.com/46914629 Here's a little S 16 mm test I turned into a short. I think Vimeo does a great job of hosting videos that still look good after their compression. I too shoot lots of DSLR and Red but think S16mm film is a format that digital, to date, has failed to capture never mind the color rendition of film.
  9. A bit of Ektachrome 100D 7285. Terrible way to shoot though...no filters, flags or light meter. Really the exercise was to let my friend Jordan use a film camera for the first time...load, shoot, feel it on his shoulder etc. So in that sense it was a great success. http://vimeo.com/53897969
  10. If it's 16mm PM me your address and I'll send you an expired roll you can practice with....I always shut my eyes even when using a tent...once you load once or twice you won't be fumbling. Meaning you can first practice in open light, then move into darkness
  11. It's not the most scientific test. I never shot ektachrome before so I just repeated the scene twice to show my eye the differences...I did crush the blacks in the ektachrome to taste...when I tried to match the black levels in the DSLR footage fell apart...lost all the shadow detail. The next test I'll so will be with an Epic and Vision 3 Neg film....and I'll do a better job of shot for shot
  12. I would look into a Canon 60D. Then install the Magic Lantern hack. 60D is the same as the 7D bit screen flips out and has a dedicated mode for "film" I'd also use older Nikon glass with an adapter if cost is an issue... you can get 50mm 1.4 for $75 on ebay If you really need full frame wait for the 6D
  13. https://vimeo.com/52911118 This test was just to quickly show the difference between the two mediums. I figured most "pro's would already have this in their head so I posted it in the new filmmakers, as that's what I am. No filters of light meter, both shoots were quick and made up as we went along. No color correction on the Ektachrome
  14. http://www.cinematography.com/index.php?showtopic=4690 All your questions are answered here. Lenses get sharper stopped down this is true of anamorphic lenses as well.
  15. As for my Square Fronts - 35...tends to be blue the others white Curing mumps is easy...just back off min focus a bit and it's gone... so use A diopter and use the focal lengths for wnat they are designed...ie...don't shoot a close up on the 35 Round fronts tend to bloom in their flair...rainbow colors etc....and I've not noticed any mumps at min focus Hope that helps
  16. Here's another example of the Sq Front Lomos. https://vimeo.com/24802059 This one os all Lomo and more dramatic...as you can see most every lens flair could have been easily eliminated with a flag or two..but as it's a music video they work
  17. Here's a music video shot with my lenses...I own a set of square fronts... full kit 25, 50, 80...mostly mid 60's https://vimeo.com/26999424 Some of the wides are spherical in this video (Shooting on an Epic will not give you the correct width of proper 4 perf film... I'm guessing that's why they went with that choice rather than using a diopter)... I know you don't want flairs... but this video is a good example of what they do look like. The reason people like the round fronts is two fold...mechanics are better and they have a closer focus without diopters. The reason people have a kit with the 35mm Square Front and the 50 and 75 Round Front is because the Sq Front 35 just happens to be optically better... Sq fronts do breathe more Square front have mumps at min focus... I'm assuming round fronts have less??? don't really know that...someone else might.
  18. Stay away from Square Front Lomos... That being said... Unless a non-diffused direct light or kick hits the front element they won't flair. Matte box and flags should do the trick. I carry a couple of extra rolls of black wrap... It's easiest to wrap anything kicking light out of frame rather than setting a bunch of flags. Mostly chrome on cars in EXT shots ...that kind of thing
  19. Here's a less stylish grab off of a Scarlet without ANA mode
  20. 1965 LOMO SQUARE FRONT I'm not too big on flairs... but others are and they usually use my lenses for music videos... out of my set the 50 is the one with the most interesting flair.
  21. http://www.orwona.com/ Try some ORWO if you need a higher ASA 400ASA B/W stock available..... this example was just a run and gun thing outside https://vimeo.com/42855181
  22. Jacek at Optek and Stuart of Focus Optics work on Lomo Sq Fronts and do an amazing job..just FYI
  23. Hi Gautam That does look like a lot of grain for 200 speed film. Here's some 400 speed ORWO stock I shot a little while ago http://vimeo.com/42855181 Not nearly grainy as your footage...I don't know enough about Telecine and it's ability to emphasize grain.
  24. FUJI 250T EXAMPLE May not be the best example of the stock...as it was damaged before I bought it...lesson learned...but fresh stock...or know it's history...you'll see a slight shift in color..it cycles from green to magenta But it should give you some idea of grain and latitude. AATON XTR COOKE ZOOM 9-50 NO CC FILTER SHOT 25/4/SPLIT https://vimeo.com/46914629
  25. In the future....TSA will hand inspect film stock if asked. This is also noted on the signs that the films below 800 ASA are not affected by the X Ray machines. So Always carry on footage when you can and have a hand inspection not a machine one.
