  1. Congrats Chas! It looks great! Where will it be playing in LA? I'll check it out. Did you do all of your own operating on the film?
  2. This is the only thing I know about: mvdbase I haven't looked at it in a while and the last time I did it was very inaccurate and didn't have a lot of videos, but maybe that has changed.
  3. No, not at all. It's the other way around.
  4. Just consider the ridiculous bs that we pay for down here....and we don't even get healthcare. 8 billion is a pittance.
  5. Dutching was very hot in the late 90's and early 2000's, then it was overused and went away, and now it's sneaking back into some stuff. I don't mind it occasionally, but too much is too much, which I think was the case with John Adams. I doubt it will be back and being overused as much as it was ten years ago any time soon, but who knows. I did recently do two different commercials for the same director/production company that loves dutch shots and had me doing them in almost every single shot I did. Just random floaty dutch shots all the time. I didn't like it, but they pay the bills... I found it ironic that most of the time horizon is very important when doing steadicam, but level horizon was exactly what they didn't want out of me.
  6. On some jobs it seems like everybody and their brother wants to stick his eye on the eyepiece. I've gotten an eye infection on a job before, most likely because of that problem. Change those things often, they get nasty fast.
  7. Hmm, I didn't know you could run film through any of those cameras. You learn something new every day!
  8. You always complain about the Canadian taxes. Well, that's what you're getting for your money. Unfortunately, you can't have it both ways.
  9. What does your company do? You're obviously not shooting features or TV, otherwise you wouldn't be working much, just like the majority of people right now. You can't compare apples and oranges. Sure, we could all go and start a company doing something else, or get a job in a different field, but that's not really the point of this discussion is it?
  10. Sure they can. It happens all the time. I had a Canadian Steadicam Op undercut me on a job (shooting in LA) just a couple days ago.
  11. If you've never even used a 35mm camera, how is it that you think you know one way or the other what's possible with a 35mm camera? If you don't know what you're talking about, you shouldn't talk. Information based on the lack of knowledge is not helpful.
  12. Wow, how could you think that? It's one thing if you didn't like it, but to say it's a horrible film is a little far fetched. Oh, and I thought it looked great.
  13. I've seen plenty of commercials and music videos on the air before I got a paycheck. That's really annoying.
  14. Let us know when it gets a release as well. I'll certainly check it out.
  15. Stiller's bit would have been OK if it was even remotely funny, but it wasn't. It was just dumb. And he was making fun of a guy who may actually have a serious issue. I would have preferred a Christian Bale imitation. I did think the Janusz Kaminski bit was funny. "They made me do it Mr. Spielberg. It's slow in town."
  16. As far as I know no Indian company won any awards, or had anything to do with producing the movie. Slumdog was produced/financed by Celador (UK I believe), Film4 (UK), and Pathe (French). The producer, director, and DP are from the UK, as is most of the key crew. First of all, the people that made this film are not from India, as I stated above. Also, it's not that low budget. I think it was around $15 million. And the Academy doesn't make money off of the films they give awards to. I think you're pretty confused about how the Academy and the Oscars work, not that I'm an expert.
  17. We're waiting on payment from our client. We couldn't open your invoice attachment...it's in a strange format. (pdf)
  18. Why is it the politically proper thing to do? I see no political motivation for it to win. If you'd said that about Milk, it would make sense. Am I missing something?
  19. I searched a couple of these on IMDB really quickly and saw that one or two have lenses listed. Didn't see any stocks, but I didn't check them all.
  20. I'll chime in and say that the Bartech is definitely not crap. I owned two of them for years and loved them. The service is indeed top notch, and Jim Bartell is a great guy to do business with. About a year and a half ago I switched to a Preston HU3 and I love it just as much as my Bartechs. When you compare price/performance, they're actually about equal I think. My 2 channel Bartech system cost me about $9000.00. My 2 channel Preston system cost me a little over $19,000.00. For the price, they both perform fantastically, but the Preston does more, which is what the real difference is. Of course, Preston is the industry standard, with Bartech coming in second I believe. I only know of two people who own/have owned Scorpio's. I think they're both happy with them, but when you need it serviced it's a long trip. Preston is right in Santa Monica and you can drop in any time and they're very helpful. And Bartech is in Long Beach, but Jim has been known to drive up to LA to help an owner when they are in need.
  21. The Wire is by far my favorite TV show ever. I think it's the series that inspired all those other series to have longer story arcs, which I love. 3 perf yes, but I haven't ever heard of an HBO show shooting 2 perf. Of course, I could be wrong.
  22. First Unit is based out of the Tampa area. I believe their # is: (727) 522-2203. I worked with them a lot when I lived in FL. They're great guys and they have good gear.
