  1. Whats the "Local 600 California experience roster" and also what is "IA"? Cheers S (UK)
  2. I agree...but I would add that you have to go with what you feel comfortable with. S
  3. Was the blue rimmed, white centred beam on the wall from our 'bulb'? S
  4. Let's say I'm using some sort of 52XX film with an EI of 400. I use an incident meter at my talent and it say f/8. What does this mean? That if I set the iris on my camera to f/8, she will be properly exposed? Not properly exposed, just your optimum. Also, wouldn't the tstop of lens need to be considered, some how some way in which I'm not sure? http://www.cinematography.com/forum2004/index.php?showtopic=28058&hl=t+stops There seems to be a lot of precise calculation, I don't get how people can light by eye. In the 'old' days, photographers could simply look down the barrel and be able to tell what stop they were at. Although I have a stop that I work with, the only time I light by eye is when I'm setting the mood of the shot. I've never tried to attain my working stop by eye as I am not that confident and experienced enough to feel that I could pull it off but I think that film stock these days have a lot of latitude, thus meaning that the margin for error is wider Besides differences in latitude, what makes a film stock different from one another? I'm trying to learn about all the different types of Kodak 35, a book I read only had about 9 types from 5201 to 5279, is there a website that tells you what the difference is between each of these? Each stock gives you its own aesthetics. There are differences in sensitivity, graininess, colour rendition and contrast. Older stocks have a higher contrast than newer stocks. You can contact Kodak or Fuji and get them to send you some dvd's of their stocks. I'm sure they'll be happy to help. S
  5. I find it really hard to critique without being blunt. So apologies in advance if I cause any bad feeling. These are the things that in my opinion you could reconsider: The music Playground shots Pan through the line of trees Taped barn doors Blown out sun. The guy holding the basketball with the kid (its too long) Otherwise you have some cool stuff on there. S
  6. Kodak tables show that 400fc = F4 on ASA 50 not F8 S
  7. I keep reading topics about the Red camera in here and for some reason it seems to be breed quite a bit of hostility and/or misunderstanding.
  8. By your selections I presume that its a daytime shot. My advice is try and not use filtering on lens as you are already losing stops using an adaptor. You won't want to lose any more of your aperture. Also, you can roll through colour temp to get the blue look you are after. I would look to put the HMI's outside coming through the stainglass, using the colouring from the stained glass. Is there any way that you can put up your giant white reflector horizontally above the scene? Cheers S
  9. I could see that you went for a 'safe' style without allowing yourself to be adventurous. You set the foundations but didn't build on it! My pennies' worth is that you need to relax and have fun. Cheers S
  10. It looks like a kind of a handheld light but not totally sure.... Cheers S
  11. 1. What was it that first got you interested in lighting? The mood and emotion that it creates. 2. Have you ever lit anything in low key, what was it? Yes. Outdoors shot, night time. 3. Why was the decision made to light in low key? Moon and camp fire. 4. Do you think of high and low key lighting as a sign? If so what do you think the project to an audience? I think it projects several messages. As an immediate example It can create tension (Just David's ref to Apo Now) but it is all related to the story and where it is at. 5. Do you enjoy lighting things in low key? Yes. 6. Do you think its more challenging to light scenes in Low key? Not more challenging but certainly challenging. Hope that helps with your papers. Cheers S
  12. Adamo, I'm sorry to say but what you just said is total "absurdity". We are obviously having a negative effect on our planet. Its a good thing that "alarmism" is taking place, because without that "alarmism" we will still be travelling in highly polluting methods for the next 200 years. And that is something we just can't afford to do! Unfortunately we need extreme actions to take notice of what is happening. It is only in the last 20 years that we have become knowledgeable about the causes of cancer. But prior to that smoking was deemed as completely fine and safe. The bill for smoke related cancer is so high that the taxes which the govt reaps in for tobacco doesn't make financial sense. Hence the smoking ban in the US and UK so far! It also applies to pollution! I would rather live knowing that I'm doing the best I can to help this planet, which gives us SO much! Cheers S
  13. The cinematography was quite something! I've since picked up on the fact that Mccandless apparently wasn't as nice a person as depicted on film. Why oh why did he not just walk up stream?? S
  14. Was at the BSC show this weekend and came across the Ascent Media stand. In there they were offering processing for 2 & 3 Perf at the same price as S16. It left me very interested as I have a couple of projects coming up. Through speaking to a couple of other people that I came across they're view was that rental houses charge more for 2 & 3 Perf cameras than they do for the standard 4 perf and S16. SO it all evens out!? But alas! I then stumbled onto a stand that had a prototype of the Aaton Penelope-2(2&3perf), fresh out of France. Has anyone got any views/experience of this camera? And if you do, did the rental company charge you more than for a standard? (Loyalty deals included) Cheers S
  15. Indeed!! Film can cope where as HD cannot! S
  16. Personally, I'm a bit like Bob in this. I've been in situations where I've had to work on a day here or there when the sun isn't shining in my life and fortunately I seem to have the ability to leave my personal events outside when at work. But at the end of the day we are human and the odds of having a bad day are just as probable as having a good one. For me it's not about how the good or bad the day has been/is but how I deal with it! Cheers S
  17. Hi Guys, I don't about our comrades outside of the UK but here it seems that there is a downtime on work since the start of the year. I'm not just speaking about myself but also about other very seasoned DP's that I have been talking to. What is the general consensus? Cheers S
  18. I have never kept a roll of neg outside my fridge....so I couldn't tell. My advice is throw it in and keep your fingers crossed...its only 100ft after all. Cheers S
  19. Great find! Also, in the dvd extras of "The man that wasn't there" you'll find a good in depth interview about his thoughts and ideas. Cheers S
  20. Brooksy, I hope that you now got an understanding of everyone's regard towards not just David but all contributors in this forum. This is a community that is not centered on one single person. It is here to help and to share information with all. Information = knowledge and that is more valuable than anything else. I don't think that you are someone that has just stumbled across this forum and with no interest in mind decided to join in. So, just do yourself a favour and redeem yourself and be part of this forum! I'm sure you have lots to gain from everyone and vice versa. Cheers S

  22. Hey Jonathan, Its strange that they are horizontal...they should be diagonal. As you probably know zebra displays straight and rounded patterns for differences in exposure. At what percentage is your zebra set at in the menu? 70%, 85% etc... Cheers S
