  1. film is dead unfortunately .. .. .. someone had to say it .. .. either the cameras go first ... I presume they are not being made anymore ...or film itself ceases to be manufactured .. solid state.. its here to stay .. its amazing film has hung on so long in the feature / commercial world.. it died 30 years ago for everyone else toting a camera for a living ..
  2. 12k tiny pixels on a s35 sensor .. DR ? low light ?.. BRAW only .. doesn't sound like your jobbing freelancers camera, or rental favorite to me..
  3. I have an A7III.. there is no real answer .. you just have to copy someone else's set up.. use the presets .. turn PP off all together .. or do your own tests.. one thing thats seems universally agreed is to turn the detail down to its lowest being -7... regardless of anything else ..
  4. Most cameras have a built in over crank record mode ..Sony its called S&Q (slow and quick).. so your "baking in" the high or low frame rate but the camera knows the base rate, so that shot /file will actually play back in slo motion / fast motion .. straight from the camera card . 47 frames no idea why .. 50 fps is common in 50Hz countries .. ie half normal speed if base rate is 25p.. you usually doubt up (180 degree ) the shutter speed too. eg 50fps = 1/100th or what ever will cut down the risk of flicker of AC powered lights..
  5. What does it say in the file metadata .. is there any audio .. I guess it has to have been shot over cranked with base frame rate 23.98p.. ask the person who shot it in the first place ?
  6. Good point .. yes it was probably about 10 years ago for London.. in the UK about 5 years .. the mean streets of Cambridge .. but I did live in Hackney in the 80,s for many years.. so yes, Im not a huge fan of the Peelers
  7. I hope the old bill never stops you on the way home late at night with this box sir.. mention my name if bail is refused ..
  8. Well I think you have to consider the source dont you .. you have no idea about this" newspaper" , and I use the term very loosely .. might have been an idea to do some reaseach sir.. then you could have saved your time .. Had you read an article about Jews taking our jobs in the Daily Nazi in 1937, would you think it was worth discussing .. the Daily Mail is a fascist rag, catering to the very lowest pond scum in the UK.. its full of racist, misogynist crap .. Im an all time champion of watching TV, Netflix .Hulu, Amazon got it all.. and I can assure you "blacks" and "homosexuals " are a tiny percentage in anything like lead roles in any TV series / programs .. except the parts of degenerate thugs .. I wonder what world are you living in.. ?
  9. The power of humor can never be under estimated .. my work here is done ..
  10. First Hitler . then Waldheim .. and now Sandra ! .. FFS.. come on Austria ,give us a break ..
  11. Thanks .. yes I was also talking generally too sir .. the times Ive had to point out the differences have been many ? .. Fs7 II .. I used it a couple of times .. and have to say the variable ND .. its hard to not have that once used .. but everything else was a pain.. massively the lack of TC in.. (what were they thinking ).. but then came the fx9.. needs a couple of FW up dates .. V2 should have been now but COVID delay.. but still its the new Fs7 in that its by far the best bang for the buck at $10k. ish .. the 6k down sample makes up for the lack of class 480 , plus the encoder is much improved from the 8 year old f5/55 tech.. alot of Venice progress in the Fx9.. you'll like it Im sure .. Never heard of the Lemo TC for f5/55.. I guess they had their reasons .. Ive found BNC to be fine personally ..
  12. f5 is a better camera than the fs7.. for many reasons .. mainly the EVF ,the fs7 is really bad in Rez and construction .,Side LCD panel ,hot buttons and menu display, 4 x SDI , DC in XLR, Lemo plug.. and basic stuff like TC in and V mount ..and a pro level lens mount .. and the overall construction is far more superior.. alloy than plastic.. The main reason there are alot of f5,s for sale now, I sold mine too, is because we have all gone over to the Fx9 , as the fs7 was always a step backwards ..the fx9 being worthy of the change ..f55 owners are also going to the fx9.. or owning both ..
  13. Re specifically the inside of a gas station mini mart..an example is One Hour Photo ..the Robin Williams film.. to my mind that soft ,heightened reality , int of the store perfectly served the film ,while maintaining a look thats the audience would find believable .. and literally something they shouldn't notice ..same as the editing ,and the audio.. I never said hard lighting is crap and should never be used ?
  14. Yeah technology has definitely played a part ..I like the "heightened reality " theory ..you can make realistic lighting "better".. but not make it ever look lit... I remember reading about Steven Soderbergh talking about shooting in the casino,s for one of the Oceans films .. and said he didnt use any lights in there at all.. I was amazed, as in the film it looks great and I just presumed it must have been a pretty sizable lighting rig.. same with Deakins lighting of the casino in Skyfall.. pretty much the practicals only .. well enhanced practicals anyway .. which no doubt in 1995 when GE was made probably just not do able .. and now we have lite matts and LCD,s not available even a few years back..
  15. Yes Im not saying never use hard light ,I was talking about specifically being in something like a 7-11 store, during opening hours with all the lights on.. and TBH I think your posted images look much nicer than the Bond clip ..
  16. .. but why light the store scene like that anyway .. . I think people would notice that thats not how a 7-11 store looks ....why would there be that hard light and hard shadows under chins.. the lighting would be calling attention to itself .. I much prefer Roger Deakins lighting in Skyfall .. but different era with different camera,s and light s .. and maybe less pressure on the DoP to give it that "Bond"big studio epic look of that time..
  17. . if I saw that lighting in a gas station store scene, TBH I would really wonder why ,assuming its was done on purpose ,or wonder who they had got out of retirement to shoot it .. cant see how this lighting would not draw alot of attention to itself in fluorescent lit store scene .. non ?
  18. Personally I wouldn't shoot at f16.. you have the risk of lens refraction .. and getting a "soft" focus look.. re flicker .. I think the only really safe answer is to shoot a test and play back.. any professional LED light like the sky panel you shouldn't have any problem at 120fps.. Ive done this with Astra,s and totally fine ..
  19. Sorry I wouldn't claim to be an expert in Red camera,s .. really you would have to do tests to know as it would depend on there lighting .. . I was just pointing out to Giray that actually RED,s are very commonly used in the nat history world.. and ENG camera,s very seldom.. if ever .. but I guess shooting 8K will let you crop in but harder to shoot high frame rate ... if I were you I would contact Oxford Scientific films in the UK .. I believe they have done alot of this type of work and might be willing to share some knowledge ..
  20. Actually alot of nat history is shot on Reds ? .. . . I dont think any of them are shooting with ENG camera,s for many years now .. its all s35 or larger .. the dual ISO Varicam is also popular .. Ive used Varicam and f55 for the BBC Bristol nat history unit .. and there was recently a big shoot in the Antarctic shot with 3 Sony Fx9,s in FF.. dual ISO and very low noise is a big bonus..
  21. If its a scratch in the gate or mag you should also see a build up too ..from the scratch .. this can help identifying where the problem is ..
