  1. They only made one movie, but what a beauty it was.
  2. Thanks for the comments guys. LOL at 16mm being obsolete. I shot with an 85 on for almost all the shots. I used a variety or ARRI Fresnels (650 & 300) some were geled a full CTB some were left uncorrected. I used Arri 2k as the key light from up on a loading ramp out to the camera's right and there is a kino flo 4x2' bank on the pole you see in the shot providing some fill. Also you see an Arri 1k open face with a chimera on it but that wasn't really aimed at anything, just a prop. If I had more time/money I probably would have floated a light baloon to bring the overall level up the room up to a T4 or so, as it was with the 85 and my 2k I was at an ambient level of around T2.8 Yeah I agree that when she is looking at the camera it is a little creepy looking, but I also think it looks quite cool so maybe that will be more reel stuff rather than in the commercial :P Thanks again for the kind words, I am really happy with how the shoot turned out.
  3. Here is some Raw footage quickly cut together. I am pretty happy with how it turned out. The concept is a behind the scenes look at this doctor having a commercial done so we intentionally have lights and such in the shot. Give the link a minute or two to load. Kodak 7218 Aaton LTR 7 Zeiss 10 - 100 Click Here I look forward to hearing what you guys think.
  4. My Mother is a Wedding planner and for the chocolate fountains they use melted milk chocolate mixed with vegatable oil to keep it liquid. I dont know how well that would photograph but what is used.
  5. I use white gaff tape over the latches of the LTR Magazines just so interns and other would be curious people wont open it. I use white so it stands out more.
  6. I would watch some of the making of stuff on the Frailty DVD. A major portion of the movie takes place in car at night. The documentaries on the DVD showcase Bill Butler's work well, including a decent ammount of technical detail. Good Luck Matt Frank
  7. My understanding is that this effect was created by cutting slits out of the shutter. I could be wrong though.
  8. Well that wouldn't apply to someone like me who does commercials, but shoots mostly on film. While the commercials which I shoot don't end up in the cinema I would still call myself a cinematographer.
  9. Yeah I guess I was just miss using the terms. I understand what you are saying now. Thanks very much for clearing that up
  10. Can you explain why the focal length would remain 25 - 250 when used on a Super16 rather than a 35mm? Thanks, Matt Frank
  11. I have an Angenieux 25 - 250 lens that I have been using on a IIC With a Beyonet mount. Would it be possible to change it to PL mount and use it on an Aaton LTR7 which is Super 16 Modified? I know it would nearly double the focal length if it works at all. Also we have a support mount for the lens which attaches to the rods on a baseplate, but with base plate an LTR7 does not sit in the center. Would a 16mm Baseplate do the trick for using the lens support mount? Thanks in advance. Matt Frank
  12. You should go see the movie, he talks about a lot of the things that supposedly "aren't talked about any more" I am not going to argue global warming with you as you have already made up your mind, but tell me this. If we all did decide to live a cleaner life style what would be the harm? Even if you don't believe in Global Warming, wouldn't you rather have cleaner air and water? I don't understand why there are two sides to this issue. It requires only a modest ammount of effort to do better, why not do it?
  13. I have used Video Post & Transfer in Dallas to do a 2k scan of some 7218. The results were pretty good.
  14. I thought it looked really good. The noise in the dark scene on the boat was the biggest flaw that I noticed especially since it cut to a warmly lit scene with no noise. I did not think that the look of the film was up to Siegel's other work and I didn't get the same sense of awe from the sky during the Kansas scenes like in the original, but overall it was great.
  15. I definately think that Final Cut Pro experience will look a lot better on a resume than Premiere experience. I don't know how important that is to you, but I would look at it this way, They are both going to do the job just fine and FCP could lead to a lot better things.
  16. I think you have to look at the intentions of the artists. I don't think that anyone would argue that the film was exploiting and trying to fleece the people of Africa. Quite the opposite in fact. Since their intention is to bring these people struggle into focus for others who may not understand or even know about it, I don't think you can really fault the methods. I suppose you could say that making the production bigger would have been helpful for the economy of the area where it was filmed, but that assumes that they would have had the money in the first place. It is quite possible that it was a do it on the cheap or dont do it at all situation.
  17. I think those look really good. I like the lack of ambient light in some of the concert shots. It looks like you really made an equipment limitation become a creative asset.
  18. I always do it in 3rds, before shooting, aftershooting and delievery of final product (if I am overseeing that)
  19. My company recently purchased a back up LTR-7 on Ebay and on one of the magazines there are 3 small rubber pads on the feed side of the magazine. They are at like 12, 4, and 8 oclock positions. The person I bought it from said Abel put them on the last time he had it serviced and to just take them off, but I wanted to get some of your opinions before I do. Have any of you seen these before? Thanks in advance.
  20. I use a Nikon D100 in this manner with the ISO matching my film speed at 1/45th of a second and the results are helpful, but not always perfect. I was filming a dark skinned woman in daylight and the Digital still looked terrible with almost no detail in her face, but I trusted my meter and experience more than the digital still and shot it without taking into account the digital still. When I got the film back it looked great. So while I think it is very useful, it is not perfect.
  21. I hope I get the issue soon. I renewed my subscription this month, so hopefully this issue still arrives in a timely fashion. Congrats David. On a side note I also saw the poster for Akeelah and the Bee at my local cinemark. It is a great looking poster that really seemed to embody the look you were going for from your producton diary. I cant wait to see it.
  22. All HD is in 16x9 as that is part of the standard. 720p is 1280x720 resolution with progressive frames. 1080 is 1920x1080 interlaced or progressive. So if you download a 720 movie it should be 1280 lines wide by 720 lines tall. I hope this helps.
  23. More time would have been the thing I wanted most. The Nurses were employees of the place and this was their day off and whoever organized them told them it would only take 4 hours (I have no clue where they got that from) so I was being very rushed on that front. Of course being rushed is definately part of the business.
  24. This was shot with an Aaton LTR 7 on Kodak 7218 with an 85 filter rated at 320. The Lens was a Zeiss 10- 100 T2.8. I had 2 Arri Fresnel kits (300 - 1k) to light with which I geled with various CTB to match the daylight coming in from the large windows. The stills look a little soft because they are from an interlaced quicktime and then de-interlaced in photoshop. Let me know what you guys think
