  1. Easy. Drinking with guys only? Sleep Drinking with girls around. Go drinking :D
  2. That's what i thought when i saw those pictures.. How did they keep the film in good condition that stood 100 years?
  3. If you really know about watches you'd know that Rolex is not a big deal. I'd rather Patek Philippe.. They have some of the most exclusive watches in the world
  4. I am a night life photographer.. There are lights like those in nighclubs all the time.. Most of them are PAR lights
  5. That's what i used, mogul base socket, the one i got was 105watt=500w traditional bulb. But never seen 1000 watt one..But if i use 2 of those it could offer 1000w equivalent of output power. They are all homemade of course, mounted to a softbox.. later i will show a picture..
  6. Recently I have began to use CFL (Compact fluorescent lamp) for my lighting gear.. Why? They are cheap, comes wit various output. Also offer different color temperatures.. But as for now all i can find in market, at least in where i live now (Argentina), are 2700k, 4000k, 6500k. Those are the common ones.. The manufacture OSRAM states that they offer the following lineup: 827 2700 K INTERNA 830 3000 K Warm White 835 3500 K White 840 4000 K Cool White 865 6500 K Cool Daylight 880 8000 K SKYWHITE As for now i couldn't find in the market the 3000k 3500k and 8000k, otherwise they'd be very useful in some scene Also of course, for the price you pay, you can't compare to the professional flo lighting gear like Kino flo.. etc, also you don't find 5500k CFL out there for domestic use.. I think.. This is what i think about CFL Pro: Cheap, low power consumption, less heat, durable (longer lifetime), great light quality, high frequency, different color temperature. Cons: less output than other lighting gear used in filmmaking. Not dimmable. Can't be switched off and on often (contents circuits in it, by doing some component can easily break) Anyone has used them already? opinion?
  7. As Brian said, you have monitor (speaker) for the sync, that depends on the music and the whole idea for the video, if you choose to shoot in slow motion, you need to speed up the music in order to match the lips in post. Usually it's convenient to shoot the whole song because generally they are 3-5 minutes length, so you have as much footage to use after. But a music video is different, you can do whatever you like, you have more possibility to experiment things and be creative. Of course when you try to do something "creative" you have to consider the technical issue during the production. Pre-production is very important.
  8. @3:43 there's a noticeable change of exposure of that shot (under) comparing the previous shots. And the gun he was holding... I think its a airsoft gun or some kind.. you can clearly see in the close up shot when he points to the other guy. I guess its .44mm ... gotta be careful with that as well.. otherwise is not convincing...
  9. If you guys have iPhone or Android phones, you can download DOF calculators applications. They also come with frame size option.. I think that's the fastest way to calculate the DOF.. I wouldn't know if they are accurate though.. :/
  10. I had problem with that too when i was trying to register First i entered 29,97 then it told me it was wrong, then i thought without drop frames? 30. Then i got it wrong again I tried 29,970 later on, still wrong. After a while i figured I typed coma instead of dot..
  11. That's an amazing work for an "under 3k" music video, i gotta say. What lenses you got from the rent package? And the Grips? you guys already have them? though they should worth more than 3k.. also the actors and fxs. Phil, there's something called Ad-honorem, maybe is not common in US. But when it comes to something that's low-budget or for educational purposes, like all the students who can't afford to pay extra. They'd be told first that there's no paid, people still do that for experience, otherwise they wouldn't go, no one force them to do the job. And its a good opportunity for everyone. And of course, if that's for commercial use, they should get paid as the union suggest. Only one thing that got my attention is that, when the singer enters the club(?) from the minimarket, it was obvious that he was "added" afterward using green screen.. due to the edges, lighting and color.
  12. Darren Using EOS utility via USB does not allow you to see the movement smoothly, due to the data transfer via USB 2.0 is not enough for the HD bit flow... And of course you don't get playback. Best way to do is, get an external HD monitor with HDMI input. Use that as monitor and you control the playback on the camera. Thats the low-cost solution for you. Also keep that in mind that Canon DSLR don't have uncompressed HDMI output signal for any HDMI uncompressed media recorder. It's been tested by Zacuto this year in the The great camera shootout 2011
  13. CMOS has gone mainstream.. I dont know much HD camera that comes with CCD anymore.. except those cameras that state 3ccd on the body.
  14. Ruh.. Cartwah lol what? Post trailer please :)
  15. That's when Fujifilm start to own the film market?
  16. Well, is all money-wise speaking. They are for low-budget feature films.. or shorts.. However some movies have incorporated some shot with DSLR... like 126 hours... and Captain America, in one of the POV shot.. because its compact size. What's important here is, the availability of DSLR to the people, when people can own DSLR and start to experiment film-look shots (even though we all know it takes more than that to achieve) The VIDEO-making has changed. While important manufactures start to release 35mm sensor camcorders, and make them every time more affordable (As the latest Sony NEX-FS100 was rated 6000 dollars). Then you start to think, why use DSLR? That's because you use it to show people something. Ok, let's say, why some movie that has war-zone scene decided to use hand-held with all the shaggy movement to achieve the live-action feel? That's because we (as spectator) perceive the journalist shot when there's some dangerous situation, as they all use shoulder mount ENG cameras. So when DSLRs with video shooting function appear, what impact and social influence could cause? When people get used to the DSLR footage what can we do with DSLR in filmmaking. I think thats what we should be concerning about. For the story telling. You see, Cloverfield, used Panasonic AG-HSC1U and Panasonic AG-HVX200for most of the scenes, and there you got the reason why using camcorder for a movie, because the storytelling. Of course you can't never compare DSLR's footage to film and Digital Cinema cameras such as RED's cameras. But surely when you need to achieve something, you can start to think if DSLR could be useful for your demand. I am not saying that I am a DSLR fan, i own one, and thats all i got, all i can use. All i was trying to prove is that, don't discard the possibility to use any available tool when you have infinite way to tell the story. DSLR became one of them.
  17. In that case, if you really want it, then you can go for it, if for any reason is not working properly, you can always have it fixed. If you do that, later let us know how it went. Good luck
  18. Well that just reminds me of this stupid joke lol
  19. Matthew: I am just gonna give you my opinion. Buying things online is always tricky, specially used items from eBay, you can't see it, touch it, test it by yourself, all you see are the pictures that the seller has taken. So, here the seller has stated clearly that, the camera does not have battery, and its been 2 years since last operation, yet he says its fully operational. So 2 years since the last time he used, with no battery now, neither you or him really know if its fully operational. That'd be $300 dollars the camera, plus $200 dollars the shipping (what he's using? UPS Deluxe Shipping Service?)Then you will have to buy battery and charger to test the camera. If it works, that's awesome, you got yourself a 16mm camera; if not, $500 dollars + whatever the battery package worths (if you can find any). The frustration will be bigger than the money loss. If i were you, i wouldn't buy a camera that's has a condition like that.
  20. Just like everyone else's input, there's no cheap follow focus.. (depends on how you consider cheap) There's a USB controller Follow focus for the Canon DSLR, but probably won't work on your Carl Zeiss compact primes, because that one controls the lens built-in focus motor. If you are using any other lenses, specially Canon's L lenses, you can consider this one, for 400 dollars.. http://www.okii.net/SearchResults.asp?Cat=2 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QODjRAIZhTI however, this is electronic one, does not have the same feel as the mechanical one. Neither the speed.
  21. Matthew, you are still young. You can always spend your free time doing what you love the most and gain some experience by doing it. Going to a film school can help you see different things you have never seen before. Is not a must, but is a plus. Note that there are few remarkable directors who have dropped out from the film school, like Steven Spielberg or James Cameron, i can only remember them. And Tarantino has never been to the film school, but he's good at writing story. It all depends on what you do, but i can suggest you to go to a film school to see things and meet people. Best wishes
  22. Before that you should discuss it with the artist what type of music video he wants, something artistic, concept, or simply plant a story that goes along the lyrics, or just something random that has nothing to do with the lyrics, or even a live performance that goes along with other footages. Just the drawing in the background of the video could give you an idea, either you could take it then go to a beach or turn it into a metaphor. There are plenty of way to do a music video, the possibilities are infinite For this song what i see is something with the singer in the outdoor singing along with a simple story that follow through the song, the image would be like a paint or film-like feel.
  23. You might want to do some research before you buy something like that here's a review about that cheap mattebox http://cheesycam.com/cheap-matte-box-dont-do-it/
  24. I see that you are a student just like me. As for now budget is a the problem for me too, and i am not talking about sci-fi, action movie or anything fancy, just a comedy, even that is a problem for me too. The location are the hardest to find, even if you do you got no chance or permission to shoo there. The rest of the gears are the main problem too. So all i can do now is do what is in my range and make the best of it. :/ Doesnt mean you cant write any big budget script, just save them for the future.
