  1. Shooting stills is a great way. I don't know what photos you can be shooting when you're struggling to fall asleep though. But carrying a stills camera everywhere helps. If it records video as well then thats also great. Giacomo's idea is great. Watch films!
  2. I used to film skating with the VX1/MK1 setup. Loved it and I fully understand your problem. I also bought a Super8 camera when I filmed it and would shoot basic tricks for 'filler' on film. I never tried filming the monitor but I don't think its the way to go about it. If you want that Super8 look for your skate film I'd suggest grading the HD/digital footage to get the look you're after. There are plenty of tutorials on YouTube and the free version of DaVinci is a great piece of software to use to grade. You should shoot real Super8 film for your skate film as well and have both in and try and match as best you can. It also helps explaining to the skater what you're shooting on (Super8). If they don't know what it is, show them examples of what Super8 looks like and how there is a finite amount in each cartridge (and the price). Hopefully they will be down to get there tricks on film and will do their absolute best. Of course this is asking a lot. Film a cartridge with footage you plan to use and try and save 10 seconds on the cartridge. Then with those 10 seconds, film a HD monitor and see what it looks like. All the best, Dan
  3. Amazing to read your support guys! Thank you for the encouragement. I wrapped on shooting my next short last weekend. I'm in the edit and hope to have it out within the next few months! Thank you Uli. It went on food/drink for the cast and crew, the shoot was 1 day and cost of renting the dog. I already had hard drives. To pay the bills and fund my films I work in the AD department in commercials & features. I had connections for cast and crew who were very kind enough to come on my first short. The DP used his own gear. I hired pretty much the same crew for the short I have just wrapped on. But now I was able to repay their kindness and pay them for their excellent work on the new short. All the best guys and thanks again, Dan
  4. Thats a shame Ricardo. I do appreciate the feedback though. This short is only 5 minutes long. The Shining breaks the rule, its well over 2 hours long and has a scene where the line is broken, famously. Of course I'm not trying to compare myself to filmmakers like Kubrick or others who have broken the rule. Thank you for pointing it out Phil. Dan
  5. There's a prop house in London that rents out 'dead animals'. Its pretty much a taxidermist that specialises for film and tv. So look around online for a taxidermist in your area, their skill is in dead animals!
  6. This website seems to give some explanation on how to upload from your mac to safari on your mac. There seems to be some drawbacks, EG "You can only upload Portrait images (landscape gets cropped). Nor can you upload videos this way. You also lose access to Instagram's advanced editing option and range of filters. " Here is another website that seems to be more detailed and helpful IMO. Hope this helps? Dan
  7. Hi, I've recently purchased Path Finder 8. I used the trial for 30 days and now I have bought it the program will not open. When I open Path Finder it pops up with '10 Days Left On Trial' and the 'Buy Later' or 'Purchase' Options. Also are the close and minimise buttons. However anything I click makes the window stretched and disappear off screen. It stretches further with each click. The only way to quit is by force quitting. I have attached screenshots to help show what I mean. I have also attached my MacBook specs. The trial version worked completely fine! I have searched and posted on the Cocoatech website and have not had any help. Are there any DIT's here who use the program and can help?
  8. Thanks Giacomo. I had a great dp and camera department for the film. Same for the sound (on set and in post). I appreciate your feedback. Phil your detailed response is great! Thanks for taking your time. I hadn't thought about that much but your points on the timing of the discovery are interesting and a good response. The 'My Wrongs' short is great. An interesting watch. Thanks again Phil.
  9. I don't know about Australia, but on the uk Panastore you can buy film cores. Here's a link. Other than that, John's advice about phoning your nearest lab is the best option.
  10. Hey Jaap, I'm Directing/DPing a short in January. It was never the original plan and I wanted to use a DP I've worked with on shorts before. But they're busy and this is such a low budget shoot that I've ended up DPing as well. This is not a problem for me as I've done it before. From the pre production/storyboarding/shot listing there is not much lighting. There are only a small bit of Interiors and the rest are Exteriors with natural light. I've also DP'd a doc I directed this year. Its not necessarily the way I want to work but it seems to be how its happening at the moment. I think it is just the low budgets haha... I'll happily share the experience if this topic is still hot in January. But that seems unlikely. So you can PM me if you're really interested. Dan
  11. That's a shame! But I understand. Thanks for taking a little bit of time. Dan
  12. Thanks Brenton. We shot on an Alexa Mini, LogC, 2K, Prores 4444. Colour temperature was kept at 5600k. It was natural sunlight throughout except for the CU of the note. The interiors was a lot of bounce off white walls, you're right. The grader also helped to give the Int and Ext different looks. But a lot of it was down to it being a sunny day and the house being very white.
  13. Hi, Here's my first proper short that I wrote/directed. Everything before that had been me and friends with minidv cameras or dslrs and no sound equipment. It cost around £300 ($382) and played at a festival in the UK earlier this year. The shoot was at the end of last year and I finished cutting it beginning of this year. Watch here. I'd be keen to hear what you think. Critique away! Thanks, Dan
  14. For sale is a 1000ft roll of 35mm 500T/5219. It is a recan from a shoot in July of this year and has been in my fridge ever since. Re-Can 28.07.2018. I'm only selling in London. Either collection or me delivering. Please do not ask for posting. I would love to shoot this but have other projects coming up, one which requires Super 8. So I'm looking to buy Vision3 Super 8 stock. If anyone has any and wants this 35mm please pm me. Uploaded are two photos of the can. Please ask for more if you're interested, I can only upload two and then any more an error message appears... Thanks, Dan
  15. Cinelab London are great! Here's their website. I'm sure if you phone them or up email and talk about your needs they will be able to help you. I guess a big price for you would be shipping the film but you could look online at shipping estimates with a postal company in Belgium.
  16. Hey, For sale is 4 cans of 16mm Kodak stock. Specifically it is: - 3x Vision3 200T/7213 400ft - 1x Vision3 500T/7219 300ft short end Info on the stock: The 200T/7213 all came from a small photographic/film studio I worked at in London. I was clearing out a storage cupboard one day and at the back found these 3 cans of film. I asked the studio about it: what production had used it, when it was and how long it had been in the cupboard. The answer was unfortunately no one seemed to remember. So they let me have it as I was keen to shoot it. I never shot it. Its all been sitting in my fridge for over a year now. The 500T/7219 was from a commercial I was on back in February of this year. There was this 300ft short end. I was responsible for delivering the exposed stock to the lab and the production said I could keep the short ends. It has been sitting in my fridge since February. I never shot it. It is annoying because I would love to shoot something with all this 16mm but I simply do not have the money to spend on renting camera/lenses, processing and scanning. So I would rather it get shot by someone who really wants to. I will only be selling in London and not shipping anywhere. I can come meet you or you can come and meet me. I have attached one photo of all 4 cans but I am happy to send you individual shots if you are interested. Make me an offer via PM and I'll get back to you ASAP. Thanks, Dan
  17. Cinelab London are great. I've only been there once to drop off rushes but they gave me a tour of the lab. Such a friendly team over there.
  18. Not too sure about mainland Europe. But in the UK you should have a look at Cinelab London's service page here. Give them a call. They are super helpful and friendly. I'm sure they will be able to help and answer any questions about printing and its costs.
  19. Is it not cheaper to buy a 16mm camera? Also what kind of 16mm camera do you want to make? Something similar to an Arri 416, SR3, or a camera like a Bolex? You make it sound like making this camera is pretty simple? I do not actually know if it is or it is not, I just thought it would not be as simple as 3D printing one...
  20. Its all sorted now. The post sound mixer asked for an OMF export instead and its all worked fine. Thanks guys!
  21. And I am using Premiere Pro CS6 if you need to know.
  22. So just another question.... I've just tried exporting from Premiere Pro to an AAF file. But I get a message like this: Cannot embed audio source "/Volumes/Heavy Luggage 1TB/Film/Rushes/Sound/Indoors/HEAVY _0043S1.wav" because an error occurred when writing essence data. Premiere ASL error number: -2147483647. Anyone know what the problem is? Thanks
  23. Thanks so much for all the info/help guys! Its been very useful and interesting to read. Cheers, Dan
