  1. I think film is going to comeback to some degree, but maybe more so with photography than with cinema. I have trouble finding modern movies that I care to watch, so I believe that issue needs to be fixed above all else
  2. Unfortunately no.. The best idea I can come up with is to ask all chinese manufacturers of cameras, scanners, etc to consider R&Ding one. the fact that this decade-old thread is one of the top hits when web-searched doesn't inspire confidence; there just isn't much recognition of the need or the niche 'opportunity'.
  3. I continue to be shocked that a viable and inexpensive consumer-level desktop scanning solution isn't on the market yet. It just needs to be large enough to hold a scanning camera and rollers/claw mechanism to drive the film through. It doesn't have to have fancy locomotion; I'd be fine with it spitting the film out onto the floor. It just needs to be cheap and produce HQ images with good if not great registration. Drifting, scratches etc are easily handled by any number of frame-blending dust/noise-removers today.
  4. If I ever make a movie I will do almost everything associated with it, because I have no other choice. If I were to somehow get into a hollywood directors chair, then I would 'retire' from all other positions , and just be a director. Outside of the ridiculous nature of hollywood and its inclusive socio-economics, there are lots and lots of professionals that excel at whatever it is that they do, and they all need the work.
  5. I liked twin peaks, seinfeld and 24.. I'll watch criminal minds and some law&order on the tv at times too. Otherwise it's sports and WWE :D I watched true detective and found it to be a ripoff of an author that I read in the past, whose name escapes me.. Otherwise the serial killer plot was ludicrous and an overblown procedural. My sister keeps going on about Mr Robot - I guess i'll have to check it out, but I have a continuing detest for Christian Slater
  6. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe that major productions go with Arri, Panavision, Sony, etc not just for the cameras, but for the support that they provide. They'll have lenses for the cameras, techs on call for problems, etc. These companies (or divisions within) are as much a cinema solutions platform as they are camera-makers
  7. IMHO at this point, 35mm professional workflow aside, DIY can keep film (s16, u16, s8, 35mm) relevant ,but it's all about how cheap you can do it. processing at a lab + scans are still cost-prohibitive compared to buying a digital Camera which will generally slaughter it at resolution and image quality. I'm still waiting for a cheap desktop scanning solution - of course one can be built, but some of us (me included) are too lazy to bother with the whole process. The processing workflow seems like a workflow that can be done 'artistically' at home. Perhaps a design for a dark-tank can be made to maximize image quality. Filmmaking has always been the hobby for the upper-middle class and beyond. Today's glut of cameras has democratized the 'artform' for anybody willing to press play. I think that's a great thing, but film should continue to have a life because it offers a different perspective for creators to work from. Price-competitiveness is essential though, for indies at least.
  8. just buy a new one and swap the gates - they are cheap!
  9. Check out Cinelog that was developed by one of the main magic lantern supporters, http://www.cinelogdcp.com/;If you contact him , he can probably assist you directly in getting a match between the two profiles
  10. Unfortunately cineform is not used so much, despite being a better codec than proRes.. and gopro is basically ditching it .. But you can easily do a proxy with proRes and conform your DNGs to it, then export to whatever High Quality codec that you desire. \ A great 5 minute video tut explains it:
  11. I have 2 questions: 1-has anybody disassembled a switar 10mm RX? 2-Anybody have a source for tiny replacement grub screws? thanx
  12. Cineform is a proprietary codec, owned by GoPro. They have licensed it to Adobe, which can natively import DNG and convert to Cineform. Via Blackmagic: You can import DNG into DaVinci Resolve - you can download the Davinci Resolve Lite for free right now from the blackmagic website. You can then export it to various forms including cineform if you have their GoPro Studio pro edition I think, which is incidentally being discontinued by GoPro.
  13. "Disposable 35mm cameras - really? I would have said those were about 10 years ago - maybe 5... and I only found them as I was collecting the flash bulbs out of them for a project. Haven't seen them since. Disposable 35mm cameras - really? For my mom's birthday present a couple years back I had maybe 50 of those suckers developed.. she'd just buy them, use them and forget about em.. fortunately they mostly came out ok, and she uses an Ipad now.. actually thanks be to heaven that she uses an Ipad now
  14. Heh, I see that after all these years the DSLR filmmaker hatred still lurks around here
  15. any of the elements in the lens might have some discoloration.. have you tried looking at the lens from above in the sun, while orienting it from side to side? Playing around with different focal settings might rectify it - I have a trashed kinoptik lens that makes ridiciulously beautiful macro images.
  16. At this point consider what you do an EXPENSIVE hobby until it becomes more than a hobby. I remember graduating with my media degree - I could already see the giant palm of reality coming for my forehead, but that still didn't stop me from blowing lots of money on equipment that either got resold or I rarely bother to use.. If you already have a 7D then go out and play - with the blackmagic RAW hack you can shoot video that's equivalent in IQ to just about any digital cinema camera of the 2000s.
  17. I watched the first 5 minutes, and it looks exciting, despite being godzilla+WOTW+Blair Witch. Can't wait to see it on the big screen :D
  18. you know you want this! search 260199726404 in ebay
  19. I've have a 32" 720p and a 42" 1080p Philips flat LCD tv, and love them. They render colors better than I could ever get from the CRTs I've had. The whole contrast issue is not to big of a deal with LCDs either as my 32" has 800:1 while my 42" has 3000:1, and they look pretty close to one another with HD signal. As for 1080p vs 720p, you can't really tell the difference from 10 feet out, but there IS a difference that you will be able to see if you look for it. Compare anything on CBS to anything on ABC from their OTA signal and you will see a difference in resolution. If there is one thing I dont like with the new Tvs, it's the fact that they use more electricity than CRTs. Newer LCDs will probably be backlit with LEDs, but they will cost more than the currently backlit ones... I dont know anything about the Plasmas, butI do know that plasmas weigh about 175% more than LCDs. According to wikipedia also, they lose their lighting intensity over time, which would suck. I dont like DLPs too much -- they have a horrible viewing angle and require backlamp replacement.
  20. why would the FFD change? It screws right in yes? I dont think polishing the burrs off the edges of teh enlarged aperture would do much.. would it? Anyway the guy that filed my plate said that I should use a polishing stone
  21. 2 i can think of are Abyss and Ransom
