Not to be confused with a ‘stylized look' LUT – I created the BozBMDFilm_to_Rec709 Utility LUT to bring out the organic contrast and color values captured by the BMCC / BMPCC in Film LOG or RAW modes. In addition, the LUT strives to preserve highlight and shadow detail [with emphasis on softer highlight roll off] while safeguarding image quality and integrity. [RAW video by John Brawley] Though it's not free, It's still cheaper than a Golden Arches Meal and definitely worth a look even if it's just to see more examples of how the LUT works.   3. I have a GH4 that I love. But the more I watch footage from the BMCC I think that nothing below $ 10 000 is capable of creating such a beautiful image. Am I the only one to believe this? Now the BMCC MFT mount can be found on ebay for around $ 800 and I'm extremely tempted. My original plan was to save and go with the GH5s, since I have all the lenses and a focal reducer, but the low light capability is not enough for me to make the jump as I simply can't fathom creating a story, whether it's a short or a longer piece without the appropriate lighting. I don't understand the craziness over low light capabilities of a cam, must be coming from people who are not interested in fiction where the environment is entirely controlled. So when you compare footage from that already "old" camera, the BMCC and the GH5s, do you see what I'm seeing, the BMCC is so much better, or am I the only one to see this? Thanks for your comments
  4. How does the A7s and the BMCC compare against each other? Because I've just joined on as the DoP to shoot a feature on a BMCC, but given the nature of the film (shooting most of the time late at night), am wondering if a Sony A7s is better. Am curious about some direct comparisons between an A7S and a BMCC at night, and how they'd be able to grade, and how they'd be used in practise with lighting set ups (as if we can use a smaller lighting kit, that might help mitigate some of the cost of an A7S), their look, etc. As if so, I might then recommend to the director trying to find space in the tiny budget to switch to a Sony A7S instead. What I really wish Sony would do is make something like an A7S version of the Sony A5100. So perhaps an APS-C version with merely a 5 megapixel sensor and the same amazing low light performance as the A7S but with the cheap price of the A5100! As I don't need a "full frame" sensor, neither do I need more than 5 megapixels so as to have enough for 4K video. I'm content with 1080p.(after all, even with the A7s, most are not shooting 4K because it doesn't do internal 4K) Unfortunately I don't think a 5 megapixel camera would go down well at all with the typical 2014 consumer, even though I've shot plenty with my old Nikon D50 which was only 6 megapixels. So I think 5 megapixels would do just fine for casual photography, especially as it would be a very very good 5 megapixels. (plus of course I wouldn't be getting it for photography, but video)
  5. Hi everyone, I have written/directed a short film last year and as I'm approaching the production of my new short film, I would like to hear some experts options about the look of my film. This was a one-man-crew project and therefore I didn't have the resources/time to hire a DP at the time and I would like to hear some opinions of how can I improve my visual storytelling skills. I am aware of many of the errors I have made in my short but I'm not going to bring up my point of view as I would much prefer to hear some "fresh" observations.   6. I recently aquired a BMCC, which lends a couple of questions. Now, I see that it is common to use adapters with this camera. Which lenses are great choices for this camera? And are there fully manual zooms under $1000? Also, is Metabones speedbooster with EF lenses a good option, or are the lenses just too big for the sensor? Thanks.
  7. Good evening guys. So, I am looking into optimizing what I get out of my RAW files. And I am not sure I am doing that right now. My workflow now, is 2,5k RAW in Resolve, and then exporting for further editing in Premiere and AFX. What kind of bitrate would you use going from Resolve into Premiere? And what is sufficient for web and cinema use? Thanks!

  9. I’m selling my Blackmagic Cinema Camera package with 2 cameras and an extensive set of Leica R lenses with MFT adapters. One of the great things about this package is that the Metabones Speed Booster adds a stop to every lens, effectively turning a f2 lens into an f1.4 lens. This speed boost happens optically with no significant loss of quality. The Speed Booster also changes the camera’s crop factor to about 1.5x or Super 35mm size. You can add lens gears to the Leicas and use a follow-focus rig and matte box. I’ve shot several professional projects with this package, including a TV show for the Pivot network and this piece for Whole Foods (which is not fully color-corrected): And this spec commercial: The package has never been rented without me and has only been used on a handful of projects.   10. Does a Sony F3 still make sense to people in 2015? Because have you seen on eBay lately just how cheap they're going? :-o You can pick up a Sony F3 for similar pricing to a new BMCC. The expensive SxS media puts me off, but this appears to be an easy way to avoid that expense: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/786662-REG/Sonnet_SD_SXS_E34_SDHC_Adapter_for_SxS.html For the only extra grand or so over the cost of an AF100 or FS100 it would seem like an F3 is worth it if you're looking for an older large sensor camcorder on the ultra cheap. (as I've been seriously looking into getting an AF100 for only a grand, just so I can have an "impressive" pro looking camera to impress the brides/guests and wedding shoots, with the rest of my kit being 1x GH4 + 1x GH2 + 2x GH1. I know images is all that should matter, and appearances shouldn't matter, but in real life first impressions do matter. If a few extra hundred dollars to get an AF100 over GH2 with the same image quality, then leads to more bookings, that it is money very well spent. But then this logic dangerously leads me down the path to spend even more on a Sony F3... as then I could use the F3 on serious jobs too) For context, I also own a kitted out BMPCC (that I love love) but it can look like a glorified smartphone to some people :-/ (until they see the images produced! But again, first impressions do matter and last)

  13. I can't decide between buying the Blackmagic cinema mft camera with the metabones speed booster or the Blackmagic production camera. The pros for the Production camera: No Moire, less aliasing, globall shutter, 4k = really sharp 1080p The pros Blackmagic cinema camera mft with metabones: Better in lowlight, more dynamic range, wider field of view I just want the one that looks more cinematic, but I can't decided which one that is. , Thanks for your help.
  14. So I am still very new to film making. Last year the only camera I had was a GoPro and I decided that I wanted to do CInematography for the rest of my life so I decided to skip DSLRs and by a blackmagic cinema camera. I have spent the past 4 months learning how to film and colorgrade and I finally feel ready to start getting audio but I have no idea what to mics and audio equipement to buy? Does anybody know what mics I should get if I want to get good audio and keep the camera run and gun. I'm in college and I film by myself so I want to be able to just throw all the gear in my backpack show up at location and be ready to shoot in 2-5 minutes. My budget for audio is $500-$600.

  17. Hey all, Just wanted to share a new music video that I directed. The video is for a Seattle band called Iska Dhaaf and features cameos by many current Seattle musicians including Macklemore and members of The Lonely Forest. Entire video was shot with two Blackmagic Cinema Cameras. We used a variety of Nikkor lens from 1970s to get the look. Project was cut in Premiere CC and graded in Resolve.   18. Hello, I'm posting a new video I shot for some friends. They are getting married and I suggested something different.. Everything was shot with the BMCC using an OLD Tokina 35mm 2.8 lens. It's the only lens I own at the moment :P Nothing was lit except for the interior christmas light scenes, only lit by the practical lights themselves. Sadly, I'm not a color grade artist so please be kind with the grade.. I wish it was better too :) I've been playing around shooting different test footages with the camera to try to get a better idea of how to expose properly in different lighting situations. Shooting RAW is great, huge files but worth their size in post. (That can be debatable) Again like the other one, http://www.cinematography.com/index.php?showtopic=60653 I don't have a rig for this camera either sooo sadly some stuff is pretty shaky and given the crop factor my 35mm turned into some 60mm or something around that making every little movement very noticeable.   19. To anyone here who uses DaVinci Resolve (full or Lite), you may be interested to know that version 9.1 was released today. The update includes retina support for Apple's Macbook, including the 15" Retina Macbook Pro. It also includes an enhancement for the CinemaDNG format, which is used by the Blackmagic Cinema Camera.
