  1. I believe its a mod to combine focus and Iris in the one unit.. the slider being the Iris control..
  2. Smoking in a cinema..!!! a little bit of a fire hazard no..? .. hope it was out doors..
  3. I believe your only in 8bit Slog on that camera.. sorry I haven't used it but i shoot Slog3.cine all the time with an F5.. there is alot of info about Slog3 on XDCAM-USER.com .. a guy called Alister Chapman.. who knows all things Sony.. ! http://www.xdcam-user.com/2015/12/deeper-understanding-of-log-gamma-experiments-with-a-waveform-display/ Its on his site but he also recommends not to use Slog for night ext.. by the nature of Slog3. you will be only using a very small amount of your recording bucket .. you wont have a large Dynamic range so you,ll be wasting alot of data .. better to use actually REC709.. or one of the hyper gamma type curves.. also grading 8 bit log doesnt leave you that much leeway when you start pulling things about.. Its nearly always better to over exp Slog a bit..and correct in post for noise.. but this ETTR thing is coming from stills people now shooting video.. and will give you hell in post ..in 8 bit it will be even worse.. you can over expose the whole scene/film by say 1 stop, like rating film stock lower.. for correction in post but this is then done universally and easily corrected in post.. this is often done to minimize noise .. you lose 1 stop of highlight but in log you will have so much anyway.. people sacrifice that for a "cleaner" image When I shoot Slog I use a 709 MLUT for the VF/monitor and pretty much go by eye,and use the WFM/zebra,s if in doubt.. judging off an Slog image is very hard to set exposure..let alone focus.. basically its not a viewing gamma .. its only a capture gama.. dont let the director ever see it :)
  4. But arnt you all shooting RAW or least Log on drama /commercial,s .. then surely the lens coating etc will make no difference in post when you can dial in what ever you want.. then its just rental cost, size, weight considerations ?
  5. Is it not anyway better to go with a "clean boring" lens and add "character" with way more control in post.. if character is a lens being warmer or less "perfect" I presume meaning less optically sharp.. all this can be done in post .. as presumably it was in the non boring films mentioned shot on boring lenses.. ?
  6. Phil.. thats a sound recordists boat sir
  7. Canon CN7 I prefer to the Fuji.. for extra range and just that the iris, zoom, focus seem to be better placed.. and 180 degree focus travel.. although both heavy and the CN7 is a bit more front heavy.. ideal for doc,s or locations where you dont want to change primes..
  8. I shared a credit with him,and others. on Revenge of the electric car.. and agree with everything said above.. he could have just sat back by the pool.. but he never stopped fighting the good fight .. the term is used alot .. but truly a great man..
  9. And were the pyramids built by slaves or union members .. or are they the same thing.. discuss ..
  10. Yes I really think there is alot to her not being around to honestly tell Lucas then his idea,s just were not good.. and the fact that really after she had no input ..IMHO .. the films really took a nose dive.. and no one could or would tell Lucas.. hey George .. Jar Jar Binks.. thats really quite an offensive and stupid character... to say nothing of her editing skills.. Of course there are two sides to every story and of course I dont know either of them ! (but I did see him when he turned up on the set of Labyrinth with Linda Ronstadt ! . ..) but the fact she has been written out of history is very telling.. I think personally Star wars really needs a total make over.. I think JJ Abrams is of course a very able director and he has proven he can handle the monster budget films.. where Im sure there is alot more going on that just directing..but its made more for the fans how.. with tons of references for those in the know.. it needs the Nolan Batman treatment.. to get serious .. a real story.. some darkness.. it needs to mature with the right director away from pop corn tent pole.. well in my opinion anyway.. but as such a money printer I doubt the formula will change anytime soon.. or any studio exec is going to put their career on the line to make it happen..
  11. Ok now we have the reason Stars Wars went to hell in a hand basket .. http://nypost.com/2015/12/18/george-lucas-brilliant-ex-wife-was-secret-weapon-in-original-star-wars/
  12. Thanks Bill.. Yes I probably do just because Ive been doing it for a while.. but I wouldn't call myself a film maker.. Im a cameraman..I work on other peoples films.. and I certainly dont put my own money into their projects.. in fact I try to relieve them of the maximum amount :)... my point being that as a "specialized " worker (camera/sound/editing/makeup/gaffer /grip etc) within the film /TV industry.. alot of people can make a pretty good living out of it.. especially if you have your own gear.. vital for freelance tv/corp work in my opinion.. but to make your own films is a different story.. people I know who do this usually have high earning, long suffering spouses or family money..
  13. Bill.. sorry you have taken my post totally the wrong way.. I was actually going to type Tyler and Bill as film makers ..this wasn't a reply to your postings sir.. I would most definitely include you as a film maker.. I was only making the distinction between film makers like your self who actually "make" your own films and film/tv technicians like myself.. I have great respect for you guys.. especially putting your own money into projects ..
  14. Guys very simple solution.. get a partner with a steady job or a trust fund .. :).. I think there is a big difference between a "film maker" like Tyler .. who is involved with the whole production.. most importantly funding,or self funding.. and someone like myself or others here that just do the one job freelance for other peoples productions.. technicians I guess.. this is more like a trade.. you serve a bit of an apprenticeship.. learn a craft .. some are a bit better than others.. had better teachers and luck plays a huge part too.. Im sure anyone in this industry doing well can point to one time when they were in the the right place at the right time.. I admire the filmmakers.. putting huge amounts of time and money into their own projects.. I couldn't live that life.. but I guess at least for a very few ,there can be huge finical rewards and acclaim if they strike gold one day..
  15. Yeah good example.. must be fun for a DP on a decent budget Sci fi film to not have to follow any rules.. pretty sure i read Cronenweth did the Xenon sweep for one shot.. thought it looked good and then decided to use it as an on going theme.. thats what makes the greats I guess.. the balls to go with something that just grabs you..
  16. Yes I guess is alot down to taste .. which is usually also matched to the type of films you like too.. theres no realistic lighting on a another planet set 10,000 years in the future with 10 suns.. well unless you see 11 shadows I guess :).. equally you will probably never see massive sweeping wide angle crane shots with 20 Dino,s back lighting in a Ken Loach film.. I guess there will always be such a thing as "bad lighting" .. but otherwise one mans meat is another mans poison ..
  17. Anyone doing camera work as a living can do a lovely shot given the location and natural lighting.. take anyone to a beach in Hawaii at sunset.. some palm tree,s to silhouette,a beautiful house on the point..and a high end camera.. its going to look great.. there are tens of thousands of camera people who can make that shot .. but then to recreate a room interior with the same lighting..and actors moving about.. in a studio in Pinewood on a rainy cold day months later.. then the list goes way down.. then you have a DOP.. love the way guys shooting reality tv with EX3 call themselves DOP.. thats another rant though :)
  18. Yes sure I agree in principle .. but were there no shots in Reverant that could have benefited by some lighting ..
