  1. For anybody in the LA area interested in shooting the format, Geo FIlm by the van nuys airport has a couple of the beaumot vista cameras. I've done 3 music videos as a 1st over the past couple years with them. They're quite lovely when treated well, but neither the optics not the video tap show the entire open gate image area. They're PV mount and Geo sends them with a rehoused set of Leica Rs https://www.geofilmgroup.com/
  2. Hi Cameron, I'm sure you have your reasons for Ebm specifically, but I'll throw my Baeulieu R16 motor-driven cam into the offer ring
  3. Hi Ryan, Best luck to you with your move. I lived in uptown Long Beach in Bixby Knolls for 8 years. It’s a really excellent neighborhood, and nearby California Heights is chill as well. for someone starting a new life in LA county, it was a great mix of suburban space, proximity to LA, and great weather/nearby beaches. I never felt unsafe personally. If you don’t need to be Hollywood or the Valley every single day, it’s a nice place to call home. The commute comes out to an hour each way most days. Bonus is driving to the west side / LAX isn’t as bad as compared to points east of LA, and LGB is a fine 2 terminal airport too. Feel free to massage if you want any Long Beach tips. In May this year I moved to Highland Park. It cuts the commute in half for me generally, but I’m usually around east side, PV hollywood, or the Valley sometimes. It’s nice being close to South Pasadena with its great parks, and closer to the mountains if you’re into that. - Dan
  4. Hi Forrest, As long as you have taped out your lenses to confirm the witness marks for all distances match up with real world objects, (Which typically is done at a prep the day before with a focus chart) then measuring distance repeatedly, and having a sense of all distances among stationary objects, and as they relate to talent, is usually the most reliable method. We often use ultrasonic distance measures on camera with readout on the hand unit as an additional tool, but when ACing, I would still use a laser distance measure, as well as physical measuring tape, or literally just my best guess in various situations, and basically repeatedly cycle through a couple tools at my disposal for critical shots. Certain situations such as extremely long lens closeups are better suited for monitor work because of extremely thin depth of field, and additionally there are overlay displays which create a visual representation of the depth of field over the image on a monitor and / or on the wireless focus unit. Still, I find that for most normal and wide lenses, I can best anticipate an actor’s direction and distance by watching their feet. It’s not until reaching into longer lenses or very large apertures that this method fails to keep up with the alotted depth of field. A huge part of this whole process is a knowledgeable DP who knows the right amount of depth of field to use to various scenarios, and the “likelihood of success” curve as you vary your depth of field via focal length, Iris, and distance to subject for a given shot.
  5. Hey Daniel, Preston definitely has a cable for the 6 pin. Maybe one for the 2 pin as well. Either will provide RS, and the 6 pin provides power as well.
  6. Joe at Cinelab was a godsend for this. Don't let the remjet discourage you! Totally reasonable to DIY on a small scale. If you can do c41 or e6, you can do ecn2. Test a roll you can afford to lose first because there is an art to avoiding the scratches. I like to use my fingers to squeegee about 2-3 feet of the film at a time after the processing is done, and clean my fingers each pass in water then photoflo. Takes 3-4 rounds usually to get rid of the remjet, but you can do it! Make sure you keep a sous vide temp bath (bathtub works great) This kit is what you want. https://www.freestylephoto.biz/9120002-QWD-ECN-2-Home-Processing-Kit-to-make-1-Liter
  7. Hey Jon, briefly, yes your suspicions are correct. Bolex footage is not nearly as steady as arri / aaton footage
  8. Hey Guys and Gals, Let me say first off, that I have been coming back to this forum for years and years now, and have always found it to be a wonderful place to educate yourself on production practices and technique. I'm thankful to all the people here to continuously and freely share their great insights. I'm in the process of funding my 3rd feature length film as cinematographer entitled "No Volveré", or "I Will Not Return". I wanted to share with anyone who may be interested, our Indiegogo campaign video. There's a bunch of 35mm 4 perf and super 16 footage in here that you folks might find interesting, and of course a bit of insight into what our film will be about. If you take the time to check it out, Thank you! And feel free to hit me up with any questions about it. https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/no-volvere-movie-film#/ Cheers folks, happy shooting. Dan
  9. Francisco, a 16mm format lens wont give you a big enough image circle to cover the sensor of the 7d, which is basically the same size as super 35 film. In short, don't bother.
  10. Hey guys, I have tried to figure this one out for myself, but can't seem to find a definitive answer. I have a Bogen 3068 head that is missing a pan handle, and I am wondering if anybody could tell me what size / diameter the proper handle should be. If you have any hints, aside from ebay, on where I might procure one, that would be much appreciated as well. Thank you in advance, - Dan
